- TheMachine1, on 04/11/2009, -2/+14"The conquest of Canaan, in which God ordered the Hebrews to completely exterminate the Canaanite people -- again from the elderly to newborns and fetuses. This is described throughout the book of Joshua as occurring in Jericho and other Caananite cities."
http://www.religioustolerance.org/god_cana.htm - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+12The historical reality that has been revealed by archeological discoveries over the last couple of decades is that the Caananites and the Hebrews were the same people. The Hebrews believed in a different god, but their people were indistinguishable from the Semitic peoples that lived in the lands around them.
Caananites were absorbed into the Hebrews. There was no clear cut 'conquest of Caanan' - it was a cultural war, the eventual winners being the YHWH believers. There is no evidence for a conquest of Caanan by war. - swartza, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8Canaan NOT Canada. Reason #1 why you are an idiot!
- Mockylock, on 04/11/2009, -4/+11In all reality, almost every accomplishment of human kind was acheived for the sake of impressing a woman... or getting money to get women. With that said, I'm sure they figured that since women ultimately make the decisions.. they'd put her in a leading position....
....Once.
And I'm sure they learned from their mistake. - Tanktunker, on 04/11/2009, -2/+8Canaan is in Israel.

"Instead, the plaque may depict a male king who is wearing a wig and making an offering to a deity of lotuses—a flower symbolic of death and rebirth to the ancient Egyptians, Cooney added."
Can I get some Ackbar ASCII all up in here? - Lynxpro, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4Or Egyptian, Babylonian, Neo Babylonian, Assyrian, Syrian, Minoan Greek/Philistine "Sea People", Roman, Holy Roman/Western European Crusading Christians, Arabs, Turks, the twilight of the British Empire....

I'm not convinced about adding rock throwing Palestinians since they haven't won anything except for continuing to exist. - TheMachine1, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4"Canaan, the land that became ancient Israel"
So what happen to the Canaanites? - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4"There was no clear cut 'conquest of Caanan' - it was a cultural war, the eventual winners being the YHWH believers. There is no evidence for a conquest of Caanan by war."
Sources, please. - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+3Unless you're the Romans - in which case, feel free to sack Jerusalem and burn it to the ground.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4And why do we care so much about money and respect? Because it gets us chicks. Let's face it, if it weren't for women, instead of working for that next promotion or some *****, we'd all be stayin' at home, sitting on the couch, watching TV, beer in one hand, the other scratching our nuts.
- wunderdog, on 04/11/2009, -2/+4So, the Canaanites were Palestinians?

"The figure is, in my opinion, a man," commented University of California, Los Angeles Egyptologist Kathlyn Cooney.
"I would expect a female to wear an ankle-length dress, not a knee-length kilt," Cooney said.
"This figure is also shown striding, with legs apart, a typical posture for a man."
I would have to agree, as seeing the monotheistic cultures were patriarchal...
Minoan on the other hand, well the art speaks for itself...
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://z.ab ... - Lynxpro, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2If the ancient Hebrews thought a matriarchy was such an abomination then why to this day is Jewish lineage traced from the mother's side and not from the father's side as is most of Western culture? Is it simply because it is so much easier to state for a fact who one's mother is and not so much who one's father is without a DNA test (which obviously was not available up until modern times)?
That's not the part that fascinates me about ancient Judaism. What fascinates me is how a formerly minor semitic (sic) deity such as Yeweh came to topple the earlier semitic gods - and I emphasize "gods" - such as El and his goddess wife. The Caanan occupying Hebrews came to believe that only Yeweh was their sole deity - and then later believing him to be the sole universal deity - and El - the formerly separate superior deity - became just another name to describe Yeweh.
It would be like if in Norse beliefs if Loki actually succeeded in toppling Odin and forever then the Norse believers chose to forget Odin and the other Norse gods and actually started using the name Odin to also describe Loki.
or...
To borrow the modern RDM re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, the Cylon God having originally been one of the 12 former Lords of Kobol who rebelled against his brothers and sisters, overthrew them - or fought them to a draw - and then declared himself the one true God to his followers and enemies. - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3"The fire-blackened ruins of Jericho aren't evidence?"
Jericho was not destroyed at the time of Joshua.
There were plenty of battles and destruction of settlements by various means at different times, but little to support the events depicted in the OT.
The archeological evidence shows a long period of integration by nomadic peoples. This is not popular with people who hold strongly orthodox religious views, but the vast majority of scholars agree with this scenario. In fact, some leading scholars, ones held in high esteem in Israel and even working for the antiquities authority, go so far as to say the Exodus itself is entirely non-historical. - sandipc, on 04/11/2009, -2/+4KILF?
- zeebo, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3Its not even clear that they believed in a different god or rather set of gods, since at that point in time they were not yet even monolatrists, let alone monotheists. Its more likely that they simply had slightly different beliefs regarding their gods, prophets and heroes, as is the case between mainstream Judaism and the Samaritans to this day.

- kdjones216a1, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1When we go looking for a queen, then we tend to see a queen. It is too hard to know for sure if we would the true lioness. But it is cool to see the possibility.
But ancient queens are not a new thing. - Nicoon, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1Second page seem to suggest it was a Male "Queen".

Dictionary.com
queen 1. a female sovereign or monarch.
King 1. a male sovereign or monarch; a man who holds by life tenure, and usually by hereditary right, the chief authority over a country and people.
To recap female ruler = queen. - wondertwins, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1saw a documentary on her on Discovery or NGC couple days ago. It was very interesting

Lynxpro: it's an interesting point you make (in the first paragraph, i really didn't know what the hell you were talking about after that) and it's one worth thinking about. - wh3873, on 04/12/2009, -1/+1Hey I took women's studies in college and I got a B.
I almost got an A I was like a ***** hair away. - Tanktunker, on 04/11/2009, -2/+2I was talking about greater Israel, not modern Israel, and while their borders don't exactly match up, I think Israel is still significantly bigger then Canaan.
Either way, it's still not Canada. - Lynxpro, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1
...heading out to the Caananite Costco... - Lynxpro, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1Probably not. Freddy Mercury's family were Zorastrians, the Persian religion that influenced so much of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
I personally feel it a shame that so few Persians/Iranians are Zorastrians because it is their true religious faith and a non-Islamic Iran would not only be part of the West but also would not give one rip about Israel/Palestine since it is only Islam that ties them to that never-ending struggle because, after all, they are not an Arabic/Semitic people. - poidh, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1Come on, like I'm going to actually read an article about Canaanite tranny rulers.
