That video explains how. - stealth658, on 10/21/2008, -0/+6I really hope this leads to something in humans. My grandfather has Alzheimer's, and it's a terrible, terrible thing to even imagine going through.

"More recently, two prospective studies involving older and elderly humans (the ARIC and Zutphen Elderly Studies) have shown a strong correlation between higher plasma and intake levels of EPA and DHA, and subsequent decreased cognitive decline. The Zutphen Elderly Study highlighted the fact that an average daily intake of 400 mg of EPA and DHA appears to be a significant threshold level at which a marked protective effect is observed. Some experts suggest that people who are allergic to fish and/or shellfish, and those who cannot or will not obtain sufficient intake of fish, should consume 1,000 mg per day of fish oil from supplementation.7 A supplement containing fish oil and flaxseed oil also may be a consideration, providing the total amount of EPA and DHA reaches a minimum threshold intake value of 400 mg per day" - MacParrot, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2A UK Alzheimer's expert called the work "robust and exciting...and then immediately forgot what he was saying.
Guys, my father's death was partially attributed to Alzheimer's, but to think you've found the answer to this is as foolish as saying you've cured cancer. It's a moving target with many different causes. - dukeeeey, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1so .. the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology is not a reputable source ?
just go bury your head in the sand - atact88, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1A lot of things are under investigation for causing Alzheimer's. One of the biggest ones is copper related toxicity in the brain which causes the protein plaques. Don't believe the hype or superstition about mercury amalgams, America sucking, or dietary *****. Get off Digg. Read some scientific articles.
By the way, cyclooxygenase is an enzyme responsible for breaking down arachidonic acid into prostaglandins which function in a variety of ways in the body. Painkillers, particularly the NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) as well as the drugs that people take for things like rheumatoid arthritis block the action of cyclooxygenases in the body. These things are also found in the brain. Is this related to the abundance of arachidonic acid in this study? Perhaps some people simply express less cyclooxygenase. This happens as we age as well. Someone will have to do a study to find out whether NSAID use in elderly people is wise. - GlassAgate, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1Just because they sound reputable doesn't mean they are.

- tzvete, on 10/21/2008, -0/+0"There are currently 700,000 people living with dementia in the UK, but that number is forecast to double within a generation."
Why is that number going to double? - MrPeach, on 10/21/2008, -1/+0So scientists have induced an Alzheimer's like condition in mice, then "cured" it by suppressing the genetic abnormality they induced. Then they make the leap that this "treatment" has applicability to humans with Alzheimer's without first determining that the condition they induced in mice is in any way analogous to Alzheimer's, other than some similar memory and behavioral problems.
This is not science, it's crap. These people should be ashamed of themselves.
It's all about publish or perish, and damn the science. - dukeeeey, on 10/21/2008, -4/+1Alzheimers is probably caused in large part by mercury poisoning from people with amalgam fillings
