- alviataylor, on 12/29/2008, -0/+20exercise is really good for everyone not just kids
- apoc2050, on 12/29/2008, -0/+17Well stop the presses!!
- jvincent08, on 12/30/2008, -2/+12What's with all the "no *****" articles on Digg lately?
- Gypsylilly, on 12/29/2008, -0/+10It's Common Sense really. I don't understand why our lawmakers don't see it...oh wait...
- Peko, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7"jazz running". =)
I'm sure it's probably some very proper and nuanced skill but really it makes me want to laugh, beat you up and take your lunch money. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6I remember reading about an asian school that took the body weights of it's elementary students and the ones that were overweight, had to spend like an extra 30 mins exercising per school day. I didn't think that was such a bad idea, but god knows in the US, parents would be crying about how discriminated against and how emotionally hurt their little "piggly wiggly " children are because they are made to work off some of the excess weight.
- GiganticLeopard, on 12/30/2008, -1/+7and the scary thing is that due to the No Child Left Behind program, many elementary school kids no longer have recess because they are too busy preparing for standardized tests since schools are forced to meet performance standards or their funds from the Us Gov. will get cut.
- macattak420, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5Take care of your body and you body will reward you.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6Imagine where the nerd would be if he actually exercised.
- JulyZerg, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4People have known about this for... how long? A few decades? A few centuries?
No doubt it was done by the same people who did the study that I saw in the newspaper (my internet was down) "Free alcohol results in more getting drunk" - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Newsflash. Is it any wonder why students in competitive Marching Bands are typically near the top of their class? Music plus exercise in the same activity. I'm a huge band advocate, and I'm a physics major.
The modern marching band is so athletically intensive now, with jazz-running, controlled breathing, etc that it's easily comparable to playing a sport. Is it a sport? That debate will go on forever. Is it athletic and exercise? Yes. - lornali, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Eat less junk food. Your math will improve and your obesity will reduce
- mrogi, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3If exercise was the path to good academics every dumb jock on my high school football team would be a Rhodes Scholar.
- ninjarabbits, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3and the football player studied?
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! - iceblizz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Dugg for piggly wiggly
- shootermcgavn, on 12/30/2008, -0/+31. The article isn't saying that you need to be a professional athlete to be smart. It's saying that being active i.e. not sitting on your ass looking at the interwebs all day will help your mind function better.
2. Christian B. Anfinsen - Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 1943. Played collegiate football.
3. Myron Rolle and Bill Bradley - each was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. Rolle plays football at FSU. Bill Bradley played professional basketball, is enshrined in the basketball hall of fame, and was also U.S. Senator.
4. My mom and my dad have PhDs in pharmacology and chemical engineering, respectively. They both did track and field from middle school through college. My dad also played collegiate baseball.
5. I'm not saying your stereotype isn't somewhat right. I'm just saying you're really naive to think that everyone falls into one category or the other with no overlap. - Peko, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3A study in 2003 by Georgia Tech found that runner's high might be caused by the release of another naturally produced chemical, Anandamide. Anandamide is similar to the active endocannabinoid anandamide, a product of THC. So that means you study better on... whoa. Dude! They call em fingers but i never see 'em fing! Oh wait - there they go!
- abettername, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3im pretty sure hawking did crew and boxing during college.
- iceblizz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2America fail something? Unpossible.
- benspants, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Exercise Improves Kids' Academics
"Kids" should be possessive.
Apparently this poster doesn't exercise enough. - Peko, on 12/30/2008, -1/+3I don't know where you get your news - probably the MSM - (WAKE UP SHEEPLE!) but I heard Hawkings is going to join the UFC and fight Christoper Reeve.
- Ramble, on 12/30/2008, -1/+3Really? My work goes downhill sometimes because I spend too much time sporting.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2No excuse to be sedentary. And Hawking, seriously? The man has ALS, he doesn't have the chance to be athletic.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2the name is dumb, but essentially it's the ability to run while playing, without allowing anything above your waist to shake, vibrate, etc so that there's no change in your sound. typically it's done for large distances at high speeds, i've had to do it at 180 bpm before, for around 50 yards at a time. and remember a typical show is around 8 minutes, a lot of sprinting in there
- DarthLamp, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2"In fact, only 6 percent of American high schools offer a daily gym class."
Now that is just sad.
Gym class was the only class you were supposed to look forward to in High School. - holyskeleton, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2now get the ***** out and do some push-ups after you run a mile.
- tmt64, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Agreed. Sometimes people just need a little bit of that discrimination to motivate themselves.
- bongfarmer, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Sleep well, don't be stressed, read books and challenge your mind
- fatas, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2In Australia, the main state NSW has a program of selective public high schools (you have to pass academic exams to gain admission). These schools dominate university entrance exams, thumping elite private schools too.
But what often gets overlooked is that these schools in their regions dominate neighbouring high schools in school sports. They have a higher level of participation and have lower proportions of fat kids. - slvrbullet87, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1although there were plenty of dumb jocks at my highschool there were also alot of fat stupid lazy kids there too
- fitqueenb, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1My belief is that seeing the kids at school who are of healthy weight, with adequate activity, do pretty well, attention span seems better too. Having the physical outlet for some seems to be more important than others, without that outlet, they end up being pushed to take Ritalin.
It totally astounds me how many school staff promote to have your child tested for everything, some would love it if meds were handed out on the way IN the school to have "well behaved" and "quiet" kids all day.
Eat well, exercise to keep your body healthy, should be part of the education just the same - hard to push the other and then have poor quality of life and high health bills??? What is the purpose? - OnlyGirlOnDigg, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Healthy and happy people tend to excel better than unhealthy and unhappy people. Exercise makes you healthier and releases endorphins.
P=>Q, Simple logic. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Read the responses to the post above yours. There are more than two groups of people.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Shut up, nerd. *punch*
- Peko, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Quick! To the Romero-mobile!
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1"The end of 2008 brings some discouraging news about our kids' brains and brawn."
It's not discouraging, just tell people to make their kids exercise, knowledge is power. Sure it's common sense but alot of people don't have any. - RedontheRoad, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Didn't we already know that exercise is good for you? I guess the message here is a balance between exercise and studying.
- iceblizz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Christopher Reeve is dead *****.
- Conwaysb0718, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1"linking these two problems by showing the effects of aerobic exercise not only on a student's fitness level but also on their test scores. "
So by that logic the varsity football team should also be trying out for the chess club? - lulzitsadigg, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1wouldn't that be the transitive property? i'm too stupid to remember (should exercise more..) Anyways, I think this is just another case of "correlation does not imply causation" - I think people who participate in athletics are just a lot more disciplined and can force themselves to study more, unlike your regular joe fatass (me)
if a = b, and b = c, then a = c - SirElephant, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I was starting to worry that the only benefit to exercise was better health. phew.
- newms32, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Exercise makes you healthier, more confident, and gives you the sense that you are achieving something. People who feel these things will tend to be more successful. Surprise.
I guess having Harvard under your name helps to sell your book when all you're doing is relabeling common sense with bad science. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1 Think of you're heart as a power supply. A healthier resting heart rate can supply more oxygenated blood to your brain. It's just like a computer.
- mahmoodsdotjpg, on 12/30/2008, -1/+1yeah getting beaten up by guys twice your size is definitely the highlight of the average high school student's day
- newms32, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0"Anandamide is similar to the active endocannabinoid anandamide, a product of THC."
What? This doesn't make sense - blackraven3600, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0The funny thing is that NOW this surfaced. Ive been told this by my PE and Varsity tennis coach this for the last few years. Physical Education + Academics = Good Grades (Most of the time)
- gkiltz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0Right stats, wrong conclusion:
Kids who have more energy and exercise more are also more inclined to direct that energy to the academic side, and push themselves just as hard in the classroom as they do on the playground!!
Bad lab work is soooo annoying!! - newms32, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0This is all the article (or the book mentioned) needs to say. Shaky assertions like "exercise increases norepinephrine so it's kind of like Ritalin" are ridiculous and a Harvard researcher should know better.
