- shrewd1983, on 11/12/2008, -2/+19Cool
- Medicamusic, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13"Scientists are busy studying these ruptures in the Earth’s crust at Afar"
Yeah I wouldnt study them up-close either. - WordsnCollision, on 11/12/2008, -1/+13No, hot.
- Sornos, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10Quite the opposite. The African Rift Valley is partly in Afar. It's spreading distance between two African subplates.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10In other news, God still hates Ethiopia.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -1/+9Poor inhabitants probably will move to somewhere on the land.
- identifiedlogo, on 11/13/2008, -1/+6You guys talk like no Ethiopian is a digger. I happen to be one and .....just pump your brakes...jeez. And why don't you just go there and see the country for your self. I have met Americans who think we still ride donkeys for errands......some people do but c'mon!
And Afar is a really interesting place, regions to the east of the rift valley including some part of Eritrea and Somalia are separating from the African plate. The red sea will fill the resulting depression of the rift. People who live there are mostly nomads and rebels, so nobody stays there to build homes and live, people just walk through. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+5Hot Stuff! Coming Through
- LBobRife, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Yeah doesn't that mean eventually ocean crust will form here and (a long time in the future) there will be ocean between the two plates?
- indochris609, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4It must be Earth's time of the month again...
- MacParrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Sounds almost like a Marx Brothers routine.
Groucho: So, you're going to study these things up close?
Chico: No, I plan to study it Afar.
Groucho: From a far?
Chico: No, Ima from Brooklyn
Harpo: HONK! HONK! - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2The good thing is that these basalt flows are easy to outrun; the bad news is that if it comes into your village, your house is *****.
- hiPpymIck, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2sounds like a good place for geothermal
- Jerky1312, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2@LBobRide, Africa is literally splitting apart.
- MacParrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Agreed. With the (sort of) end of the civil war I understand that things have become much better. I would love to go back and see how much things have changed. Wasn't dissing
- ernieoporto, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1As opposed to their moving to somewhere under the ocean or into the sky?
- zantos420, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Yu-aYovwU
- mrDanielC, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1As though that place hasn't had enough trouble...now comes the lava !
- rheaume, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2Awesome concept, disappointing picture size...
- identifiedlogo, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1People in Afar happen to be Nomads, they will just walk through. Besides, you cant live there with all the Sulfur spewing out from the volcanoes.
- adamroach, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1A flow of epic proportions.
- yowhat2002, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Unzing!
- MacParrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I went to Addis Ababa in 1985. Not the best time to go. In the throes of a pretty brutal Communist dictator (bad enough that even the Soviets didn't want much to do with him), people starving in the streets, curfews from 11PM to 6AM...
On the plus Jermaine Jackson and Harry Belafonte showed up while I was there to get the "Real Deal". They soon left - identifiedlogo, on 11/13/2008, -0/+11985 Man, 1985!! that was like 23 years ago. The dictator is hiding in Zimbabwe, and the court has decided to kill him if he comes back. A lot has happened since then...
- ricoboy24, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2Its like a portal to hell.
- simg, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I *am* going to ethiopia in about 2 months time :) !!
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Teach em not to jump up and down so much...
- kendrew, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1It only happened there because its a far place
- ParanoydAndroid, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Pele would be the Hawaiian god of Fire and Volcanoes.
- RicktheBrick, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1So God hates Ethiopia enough to give it a huge amount of geothermal power. If there is that much lava flow than there must be a lot of places where there is enough heat to power an electrical power plant.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+1Pele is PMSing.
- Lunarbunny, on 11/13/2008, -2/+2A new mountain range in the making...
- warsongs7, on 11/13/2008, -0/+0Pele is from Ethiopia. I thought he was from Brazil.
- bjorkbjorkbjork, on 11/13/2008, -1/+1The links are all unrelated advertisements. Lame, and buried.
- tdigfla, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0I did not know that there are volcano s in that region.
- Screwy1138, on 11/13/2008, -1/+1Wait, this stuff still happens?
This is the REAL cause of global warming!
It's the white man's doing... trying to keep the black man down.
... - Medicamusic, on 11/13/2008, -2/+1You beat me by 6 minutes.
- Feyissa, on 11/13/2008, -1/+0It is a curse
http://oromantic.com/2008/10/19/genital-crushing-f ...
A lot of crazy things happen in Ethiopia! - Kerafyrm, on 11/13/2008, -1/+0Don't go chasin' lava flows... (4:09)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY1tZ9FJfy8 - macrumpton, on 11/13/2008, -2/+0You just know that all the Fundies are going wild : The End Times! The End Times!
- jeffkee, on 11/13/2008, -6/+1I gave your mom her largest lava flow last night. ZZZIIIINGG
