- chrislbs, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9The bad news is that we only have evidence in mice, and the mice models are not predictive of how it may work in humans. Since 2005 there have been over 7,000 people in Phase 3 clinical trials for Alzheimer's compounds (Memryte, Alzhemed, Xaliproden, and Flurizan) where the products have not shown clinical efficacy in humans even with preclinical (animal model) evidence. Sadly, only Phase 3 results are newsworthy in Alzheimer's disease.
- solarina, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5As someone who has seen two grandparents dissapear into a shadow of their former selves, I truly hope this drug will cure the disease so my parents don't have to suffer in the same way.
- sq2shooter, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4It would be nice if it did work but I am cautiously optimistic. These results were seen in mice and human testing has only just begun. Secondly, valproic acid has been used in epilepsy for decades and I don't believe there has been any clinical evidence that it helps in patients who are being treated for epilepsy but also develop alzheimers during the course of their therapy. Not to mention the absolutely horrific side effect profile this drug has. If it wasn't already approved for use years ago, it would have one hell of a time getting approved today.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/27/2008, -3/+7That looks very promising discovery and will certainly help many people.
- drunkenoaf, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4Why are people digging him down? He's completly right in what he says.
- DrunkenPirate34, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3Dude, wtf are you talking about? Shut up.
- ozroy, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3Give it to Terry Pratchett. Please.
- superfusion, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3Take the blue pill to get an erection and the white pill to remember her name in the morning.
- T3hJ3hu, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2I once talked to a guy who said that marijuana cured his epilepsy - I didn't do any investigation on it, but I trust the guy pretty well. We already know that marijuana helps prevent/fight Alzheimer's, so when I saw this article and remembered what that guy told me, it made me think that there might be some kind of a link there between the three.
- InJectaH, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Can never hide from politics.
- blacklilyninja, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2valporic acid made me into a zombie
so did tegretol
sometimes...i feel i can live with the seizures just because of the side effect crap. - ZombieBenji, on 10/28/2008, -1/+3I hope this is or leads to something which will help many.
- method7670, on 10/28/2008, -1/+3that is great news!
- dukeeeey, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ylnQ-T7oiA
- WestEast, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Its the Dailymail....so this pill probobly turn sufferers into killer zombies or somthing...eventually.
- cle2105, on 10/28/2008, -2/+3Why don't you sacrifice a goat? I heard God loves that and will probably grant you three wishes as well as save your mother
- Brandas, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1It's a bit strange that this drug helps Alzheimer's patients with memory, yet in a person with epilepsy it can cause memory problems.
- Inoeth, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1haha. i don't why people are burying you. can people not understand sarcasm?
- drunkenoaf, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I'm not saying you're a robot (your digging profile suggests not), but why are the first few comments on health stories in the Daily Mail *always* nondescript posts that could easily apply to any health/ science/ tech discovery story?
Hmm.... - madwaxer, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1hey i know a really great chemical compound that does even better than that! Its called tetrahydrocannabinol-THC found readily in cannabis. used my the sumerians centuries ago to TREAT epillepsy long before the west was taught medicine. combine that and exposing the person to a intense magnetic feild a few times a week will solve a lot of neural degenerative diseases. chemists have every interest in seeing you come back to them for treatment and more 'chemicals'.
enjoy! - OwdenBowden, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Hurrumph.
Mine is always broken... - DrunkenPirate34, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Dude shut the ***** up, this has nothing to do with Obama you dick.
- bwhite, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Wasn't there a recent discovery that an Alzheimer's drug could block the onset of MS?
- sincerelysarah, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I hope that this is a major step in learning more about how to prevent and cure this and other related diseases.
- billyvnilly, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1hmm, all previous studies with valproic acid (depakote) seem to be dealing with just decreasing aggression in an alzheimer's patient, so this is great that they found more benefit.
- OdinThor, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1Way to read sarcasm.
- nrvous250gt, on 10/29/2008, -0/+0you watch your ass!

***** big pharmaceutical companies. - inactive, on 10/28/2008, -4/+1I'd rather sacrifice an atheist, God prefers that.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -7/+3that is a very peculiar institution, much like that of slavery. You see, this country needed slavery to prosper, but that prosperity came at a cost that was much too high; you can't put a price on human life like early America did with the slaves. Slavery was WRONG but you can't live in the past. Epilepsy, on the other hand, is a very seroius encounter.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -7/+0jew bagel with extra cream cheese please ch ch (gun *****)
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -11/+3I'd rather use the power of prayer for my 84 year old mother.
