- theLEGENDisBACK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Did anyone else think the cucumber tree looked like broccoli?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18http://www.redlist.org/info/images/gallery2004/12_scops_insularis_dave_currie.jpg
O RLY? - sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Woah, saw fish. Looks like a chainsaw attached to an seal.
- Archimboldo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Wow! Soqotra, Yemen has some interesting trees.
The cucumber and dragon trees are fascinating. - thepharmacist, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17You don't quite grasp evolution, I fear.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"But extinction that results from any human activity is evil, reprehensible and very uncool."
That's sarcasm right? Humans are not an outside force. It's not mankind vs nature. We are a part of the natural world.
If a species dies out because it can't adapt to changes in its environment (mankind for example) that's natural selection. Why teach evolution in schools if we won't allow it to occur in reality? We can't pick and choose which species we want to coddle or we are admitting that life requires intelligent design. - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6big digg coming from a nature photog no less :)
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Anyone interested in Lemurs should read the book "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams (Author of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series). I am a HUGE fan of Hitchhikers Guide, but I really think "Last Chance to See" is Douglas Adams' best book.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You know I really hate to see a species die out, but I kind of agree with you. Why do humans interfere with nature by providing re-introduction programs? Doesn't that kind of screw up the natural order of things? I know we're probably responsible in large part to some of these species' loss, but we have this strange mindset that we're going to save EVERYTHING. There comes a point when ecosystems have to evolve, and that sometimes means certain species have to go.
Someday it'll happen to us as well. - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Better them than you.
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You can't pick and choose what to save. "Oooh! let's save the cute little fluffy ones!" Once species die off, the other species that depend on the will be next.

Thats amazing... - GerryDaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32006 is here...http://www.redlist.org/info/gallery2006
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3how come I was never aware of the existance of the shark ray?
- jn1167, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They should change the name of the Cucumber Tree to Big Broccoli!! Thats what it looks like to me LOL.
Very cool site. - fluidfoundation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3COOL, now I know what they look like before I shoot them!
oh.. sorry, AND eat them. Dont want to waste. - rishath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We could also add 'Forward Thinking' and 'Responsible' Politicians to that list!!!!
- JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Right, humans will certainly perish without the presence of the Verreaux’s Sifaka Lemur...
- hafetysazard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The website gives specific reasons why they are endangered.
- Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 I was in Bimini which is a small island 50 miles east of Miami Florida, and they had no problem serving Nassau Grouper to our entire part of 12 last weekend. Maybe someone should educate these peopele that these fish are endangered? I"ll let them know next time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bimini - levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whatever happened to the whales? Oh well alot of animals are getting extinct, the dinosaurs are, just be happy they aren't here or else we'll be dead.
- phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2eh... the gallery is two years old... it's the "2004 IUCN Red List"... here's the 2006 one...
http://www.redlist.org/info/gallery2006.html - vspazv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just use some distilled Agave as fertilizer and more should show up soon.
- conwayblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Frog populations are dropping the world over because of pollution and habitat change. The importance of the frog's skin to breathing and temperature regulation is its downfall.
- Genma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm sure they take that into consideration. species all over the world go extinct daily, it's not like they're going to try and save them all. but look at the info from the loris in Sri Lanka. 75% of the forests cut down by people over 50 years, that's not natural in any way. we should at least make an attempt if humans are directly responsible.
- broknman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Black footed Ferret?! I got a regular one...
http://flickr.com/photos/broknman/143901289/in/set-72057594130813956/ - Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm a fan of Douglas Adams, I will check this out, thanks!
- swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how big was that "flying fox"?
- Apparatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That Cucumber Tree is cool.
- Niteryder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is a 2004 list where is a 2006 list with photo's ? In fact where is the entire world wide list for now of all them to 2006 that are still not protected.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Redlist "Threatened" list includes the endangered species. It is explained in their FAQ and if you read the list you'll see the ones listed as "endangered".
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Really, I mean only about 20% of them look particularly tasty. Stellar Sea Cow went extinct because it tasted like a 1200 lb piece of solid prime rib.
More species need to hold to that level of quality. - stmico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These are actually photos of Threatened species, not endangered. There are 3 tiers, Protected, Threatened, Endangered, with Portected being the lowest. This is sort of a half way distinction saying they're sort of in trouble right now, but there is still more than enough time for them to replenish their numbers in the wild.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep somebody needs to make a pelt out of them before they go extinct.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Lol they have a Pokemeboy
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was the coolest one on the list.
EDIT: Sorry, meant to reply to the "flying fox" comment. - basilbub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh waiter,
Yes, I'll have the cucumber-tree salad and the nassau grouper fillets, please. ;) - TheBenchWarmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah but they should have called it the broccoli tree.
- basilbub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Judging by the photo, I'd say this fish is too dumb to stay in the water.
It'd make a nice wall hanging, though. - patterson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You might like to know that this is a list from 2004, and they have a few other lists from 2000 onwards.
You can find those here: http://www.redlist.org/info/gallery - abuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Endangered Species photo gallery.
Subtitle: How to recognize 'em and kill 'em - VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Shark Rays" are found mainly on the heads of fricking sharks. I'm guessing that's why.
- n666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i gotta say.. even though some of these look pretty cool..
well.. they are pretty worthless..
at least to me they are - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This one looks familiar.
http://www.redlist.org@pinokochiko.fc2web.com//temp/make/photo/jyoi1.jpg - theholotrope, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Ok, are they just kidding with the saw fish?
Why not just make up a car rhino and photoshop a rhino with a goddamn car on its head... - fluidfoundation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2GOTTA CATCH EM ALL GOTTA CATCH EM ALL
Pokemeboy! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7http://www.mongabay.com/images/2005/2005-11-14_sifaka.jpg
I want one! - arpad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3That's why the earth became a lifeless husk hundreds of millions of years ago. The extinction of one species kicked off a whole chain of extinctions resulting in the end of life.
Oh, it was a tragedy all right but I think we can all learn something from it.
Extinction, when it occurs from the confluence of a random series of events, is a beautiful act of nature. But extinction that results from any human activity is evil, reprehensible and very uncool.
I think these guys are missing a bet by not putting out an Endangered Species Cookbook. -
