They haven't 'found' this element, but have produced it. Such research is good, and no doubt new technologies, or improved technologies were employeed in doing it.
But even IF stuff like this wasn't economically "worth it", it would still be worth it. Just because you're content with ignorance, doesn't mean everyone else has to be too. - AndrewMoyer, on 09/25/2009, -0/+84My globe is still flat :'(

I have no qualms with a bunch of nerds spending a fraction of my tax money on this pursuit so that I, without putting in ANY effort myself, can benefit from the knowledge in Pop-Sci books later on and be blown away. Deal of a lifetime.
***** trying to justify it by asking what immediate technology spin-offs it will bring to fruit.
Nobody could have invented the TV before Maxwell. Maxwell wasn't trying to invent a TV, he was ***** about with magnets and electricity.
Science isn't about trying to invent an X so that you can have one for Christmas. - Velenne, on 09/25/2009, -7/+61From the wiki: "The island of stability is a term from nuclear physics that describes the possibility of elements with particularly stable "magic numbers" of protons and neutrons. This would allow certain isotopes of some transuranic elements to be far more stable than others; that is, decay much more slowly."
The idea here is to create nuclear energy that is as clean as possible. The lower the half-life, the more radioactive it is. If we can make nuclear waste with exceptionally long half-lives (10^9 years, for example, as opposed to milliseconds) then we can make nuclear energy without all that ugly, lethal nuclear waste.
That's the understanding I took from it anyway. - doctechnical, on 09/25/2009, -0/+51Island of Stability, just 20 or so miles south-southwest of the Island of Misfit Toys.

Scientists aren't out to invent technology. They're out there to give the developers of technology new items in their toolbox.

A stable super heavy element would be useful for many different reasons. For one, it would be great at stopping particulate radiation. There are lots more.
Understanding the decay mechanisms and the nuclear mechanics of these super-heavy elements is an important way to confirm conjectures about the physics of the nucleus since they represent extreme boundaries of current theory. - TVarmy, on 09/25/2009, -2/+22You ever buy a $15 DVD player from Walmart, and then pick it up and it's light as can be? And then you think that it's a cheap piece of junk that will break after playing one movie? The product would be much or solid if crammed full of element 114.

You don't tell people what to 'science'.
These individuals are inspired by the fields they work in.
If it was decided by the public then America would be ***** because 40% of you deny natural history. - EeekiE, on 09/25/2009, -1/+14This is why it's good you don't have a say in the matter, because you're clueless.
The point isn't that they needed to make this new element, it's about discovering how it's done, how to synthesize new elements, the tools needed, the energies needed, the technologies needed, the spin-offs from it, the deeper understanding of nature that will allow others to exploit it better.
You kill the funding to your nerds, and you kill your future economy and importance in the world. - patm1987, on 09/25/2009, -0/+13The benefits are a more accurate nuclear model that could have many cross-discipline ramifications. These could include advances in nano-technology, help with refining string theory, or more efficient energy storage or generation techniques.
The two main points to take home is that a) they proved a theory plausible and b) they are now able to improve said theory.

- CrudE, on 09/26/2009, -11/+22Why do you have to answer him like that? Not everyone knows everything about every topic posted. Learn some respect.
- EeekiE, on 09/25/2009, -1/+12Yes it is outrageous. It's fantastically outrageous.
But nature, and evidence doesn't give a ***** what you think, or HOW you think ;)
What happens to time when approaching the speed of light is also outrageous. How big the universe is is also outrageous.
Wake up, we live in a ***** cool place, that's why there are folks who are so obsessed with it, they create headlines that this Digg story is about.
