I don't care if it IS the moon, when something casts a shadow that covers half the earth, you blow it the *&^$ out of the sky! Down with the moon! Go ahead and laugh, I saw Independence Day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thats no moon.....
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Reminds me of the spawning Monoliths scene on Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey... Very cool pic.
- wearescience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, but can NASA take a picture of a total eclipse of the heart? I don't think so...
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7careful - they're ruffled!
(hope someone gets this) - bf01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Umm, wasn't that in "2010: The Year We Make Contact"?
- kjinx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5huh ..... so Cat Stevens was right then ....
- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Start your own company and become a hundred millionaire or billionaire. Then pay the soviets to take you up. Just count the number of megarich and compare that to the number of astronauts and you'll see that being rich is your ticket into space.
- DarthDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a HUGE shadow, very cool.
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS
EXCEPT EUROPA.
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE. - sabbac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes it was
- kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh, yeah sorry, I forgot to say 'this is a joke'. And remember, 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'
- m1th, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Breathtaking.
Photos like this makes me want to ditch computer science and take astronomy... almost. - TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sum'bitch beat me to it...
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3there isn't much to say about how awesome that is.
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll second that... we got the best looking moon shadow in the galaxy.
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree... rubble doesn't make trouble.
- sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This was on the front page not more than a couple hours ago. Same space station, different picture.
- Toloran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dude! The Earth just got mooned!
- cclark2222, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Or become a fighter pilot. Become a test pilot, apply to NASA. Not an easy way to go, but you'd get to land the Shuttle. How bad ass would that be?"
Given that the shuttle is not abnormally on fire first.. - RetiredMidn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too close. Call me when NASA captures this from the surface of the moon. (Lunar orbit will do.)
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What is this before i NSFW myself =/
- dbarbour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or become a fighter pilot. Become a test pilot, apply to NASA. Not an easy way to go, but you'd get to land the Shuttle. How bad ass would that be?
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2become an engineer, that's the way to become an astronaut. granted it would still be very hard to do, its the best bet. No, computer science doesn't count, they can use programmers in houston, not on the ship.
- tsar04, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'd love to go into outer space - I actually looked into becoming an astronaut and its pretty damn hard to get them to send you up
- ousama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I submitted this to digg earlier, here is some pictures a friend of mine took in libya this morning fo the eclipse
http://digg.com/science/Pictures_From_Libya_of_the_Eclipse - longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what was that shape on the moon?
- bigpixl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I usually think giant shadows being casted on my home planet is pretty creepy.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aw, come on, NASA, where's the 2000x3000px version?
- NiteTrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you have to be a fireman first...
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i don't beleive that in independance day it was the moon that blew up the white house...
- Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Photoshop!!! (Sorry just had to...)
Very awesome, wonder why they only took one picture though? Hope someone finds some more. - Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"careful - they're ruffled! "
My favorite simpsons episode. :p - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2(Insert obligatory "Dark side of the Moon" reference here.)
- TheTalentedMrC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was kinda hoping for a higher resolution for a wallpaper. Still looks cool.
- fearlessfrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Have you tried just leaving a lot of comments on Digg - someone from NASA is probably watching...

- LedZep95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is teh big shadow. Nice find!
- DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*sigh* I must be old.
One of Cat Stephens most popular songs is "I'm being followed by a moon shadow".
As an interesting aside this is a very popular tune to hear around university video editing suites because of the joke "I'm being followed by a boom shadow, Boom Shadow, Boom Shadow."
It's a very catchy tune. - iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's the "Nothing"!
Gets on flying dog and flees to safety! - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's right. It was the scene in 2010 where the sorority girl monoliths ordered a pizza but when the delivery guy monolith showed up the female monoliths realized they had no money. They had to pay for the pizza somehow but how exactly? Well, as you might imagine, within minutes there were monoliths "spawning" all over the darned place. And soon Jupiter collapsed into the form of a small star.
Interestingly, the pizza had a ratio of 1 inch by 4 inches by 9 inches. With extra cheese. - bigpixl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's Bonnie Tyler when you need her?
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh, the biggest goat.se ever!
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cat Stephens? I'm lost... Perhaps some lyrics for the uninitiated???
