- DavidCEisen, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3040 years ago the Aral Sea was the forth largest in land sea. It is now only 10% its previous size and the salinity has increased 5 fivefold--killing almost all fauna and flora.

Kok. Aral. Dike. It's like throwing an underhanded pitch to Barry Bonds. - DirtyVicar, on 07/10/2009, -0/+13Excellent, now all kinds of critters will be able to easily get to that shuttered bioweapons center in the middle of the Aral Sea. Too bad none of it was cleaned up.

- cjh24, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10It seems to me that all they have to do, is ***** the cotton, and put the rivers back... doesn't seem that tricky.
- 3rdDay, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10What a catastrophe.
- s14sh3r, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 3: Rebirth Island
- SwiftKick34, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7Government is supposed to protect the environment, not destroy it. Soviet Fail.
- buzaman, on 07/10/2009, -2/+6Its a great example of the 'tragedy of commons' when a state subsumes the rights over the property, diverts rivers for central production and destroys the ecosystem.
- fuzzybeard, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Yet. [evil mad scientist laugh]
- BrownieMix, on 07/10/2009, -2/+5At first glance, yes.
- sh1tman, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4Yes.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5It's been going on for decades! Quick! Let's panic now.
BTW- the Soviets used the island in the Aral Sea to test its bioweapons in the open air. It was the most contaminated place on the planet bar none.
Even after a serious cleanup in 2001, it's still hot as hell and its a miracle that something carried out of there by birds or animals hasn't caused a hideous plague. - twiztidsinz, on 07/10/2009, -3/+6No...
- fuzzybeard, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3"Tonight, a SyFy* Channel original movie event..."
*I hate, loathe, and despise this "rebranding" of SciFi Channel! - Craig304958, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Ain't denial of environmental responsibility great? Oh, wait, that's corporations, not socialism.
- Jensaarai, on 07/10/2009, -5/+7Man, the idiots are really coming out of the woodwork here. Are you absolutely incapable of figuring out context?
Go look at a map. Note the countries near the Aral sea. Ask yourself if large scale disruption of people's livelihoods and international conflict over something so basic as water is something we want happening so close to those countries. - angryredplanet, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3@kh99
Given both their comments, it's pretty clear that Jensaarai is more intelligent and worldly than djmattyd.
If people don't care about this, great, but the odds are that nobody really cares about those people's indifference. - twiztidsinz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2"Many scientists fear that animals will move to the surrounding land and eventually carry these deadly biological agents out."
AWESOME! - thebiznacho, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2Yes, I most certainly did.
- accn112, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2I still see it.
- valkir, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Those damn Reds are at it again!
- Jensaarai, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Meh, fair enough.
- SwiftKick34, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1You'd think someone would do something about this.
- GavinZac, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1No
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Oh noes! You mean the Earth won't stay exactly the same forever?
- addakorn, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1I can relate to that...
- fritzmusic, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2Buried for no "before" comparison photo without the aid of digg posters. .
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1Dam dikes. If anyone can save the Aral, it's them.
- Freakzilla, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1I've always hated the Aral Sea. Glad to see it shrinking...
- uclaith, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1dugg down for being lazy and taking it out on the article
- kh99, on 07/11/2009, -1/+0@angryredplanet - and you thought you had to explain that? What do you think that accomplishes other than wasting the time you spent to write it? The point is not who's comment is more intelligent, the point is that you must be new to digg if you don't know that this happens on every story and you should just ignore it. Also, a comment supposedly showing that you're more intelligent or care more about the situation actually means very little and accomplishes nothing, except maybe to give yourself a nice feeling of sanctimony.
- asskicker32, on 07/10/2009, -3/+2its because they have siphoned off much to irrigate much of the middle east. The east is crashing fast because of the dikes and dams to save the north Aral Sea...
- squashpup, on 07/11/2009, -1/+0Isn't this the sea that Al Gore said was drying up because of global warming?
- djmattyd, on 07/11/2009, -4/+2lol first of all @Jen
it was more of a comment about how Aral looks like the word anal not a sarcastic response as if I didn't care that particular body of water is shrinking and it's geopolitical ramifications. I care about the Khazaks after all it is the number one exporter of potassium in the world.
second to angry red planet
It is totally obvious cause you get a real good idea of what people are like through one line on a digg comment cause there is no way someone with any worldly experience or reasonable amount of intelligence would make an anal joke, unheard of I say! After all the internet is no place for lowbrow humor. A thousand apologies. - mikemehak, on 07/11/2009, -4/+1I wish I had known about these dikes earlier
Toronto had a massive dike march a few weeks ago, I would loved to have gone and shown my support. - FAT_PIGGY, on 07/11/2009, -4/+1Global Kook Warming ?
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -7/+4Ain't socialism great?
- ButterBuddha, on 07/10/2009, -15/+12Less Oral since 2006? I can sympathize with that...
- NewsFeed, on 07/10/2009, -14/+11Any one else read that as 'Eastern Anal Sex"?
- kh99, on 07/11/2009, -7/+3Yeah, and you're so much smarter than everyone else that you're going to solve the problem just by policing the digg comment area.
- kh99, on 07/10/2009, -6/+1On the plus side, "Aral" is a useful crossword puzzle word, and now there's a good clue for it.
- TigerStar337, on 07/10/2009, -7/+2Good news! Uranus is still bigger.
- djmattyd, on 07/10/2009, -10/+3OH NOES THE EASTERN ANAL SEA SHRUNK?!?!?!?!?
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -18/+2Why should I care if a sea I have never heard of disappears?
I never cried for the dodo
