- GregR, on 07/05/2008, -0/+49The magnetic flip is actually overdue according to geological surveys.
- geekchic, on 07/05/2008, -1/+49A side effect of the magnetic flip (apart from higher radiation doses) is that we end up with the aurora borealis (and Aurora Australis) in patches all over the planet until things settle down again.
Woo! - evolsoulx, on 07/05/2008, -4/+37[insert joke about 'The Core']
- geppetto, on 07/05/2008, -1/+33This explains why my horseshoe game has been off lately.
- Spartyon, on 07/05/2008, -2/+27now its just time to send a ship to the center of the earth to set off a few nukes, great.
im so angry that i know anything about that ***** movie. - LaughingMan89, on 07/05/2008, -0/+18It's unobtainium. From the word 'obtain.' If you spell it wrong, the joke doesn't make sense. (for those who don't know, unobtainium is normally a word used by engineers when a certain design can only work with a material which doesn't exist.)
- YodaJones, on 07/05/2008, -2/+17It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.
- Gillagad, on 07/05/2008, -2/+15FTA: "This radiation does not influence temperatures on Earth."
- thebellmaster1x, on 07/05/2008, -1/+14No, the Mayans did not. For the love of God. They did not predict the end of the world, nor does their calendar end. It's just the beginning of a new era in their calendar. That's all. Jesus, calm down.
- danharlow, on 07/05/2008, -0/+12NOVA did an entire episode on this in 2003 - very interesting : http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/
- reland1, on 07/05/2008, -2/+13NBC, CNN and Al Gore or Harry Reid
- TheInformer, on 07/05/2008, -3/+13Ok, which media outlet or pundit is going to blame the change of the core and magnetic field on global warming?
- Derelict267, on 07/05/2008, -1/+11Kinda off topic but yellowstone, having the largest supervolcanoe in north america is also overdue for an eruption. "On average, the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts once every 600,000 years - but the last time it erupted was 640,000 years ago." If that happens most of america is *****.
/doomsday - ltemerpoc, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9How many languages do YOU speak...
5.
I speak 1... 101101 - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -4/+13The Sun changes poles every 11 years so this can happen anytime. No much we can do about it so live your life as usual.
- HallEffected, on 07/05/2008, -6/+14no sun spots + magnetic field change = global climate change.
- gquaglia, on 07/05/2008, -1/+9How long before the wacko doom and gloom, man is evil, sect tries to blame this on humans somehow.
- Hypomanic, on 07/05/2008, -3/+11If my life turns into being an extra in a ***** knock-off of The Core, I'm going to be upset.
- DarkDragon, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7>> If that happens most of america is *****.
Umm, if the yellowstone supervolcano erupts, most of the population of the earth is *****. - Albumen, on 07/05/2008, -8/+15That's totally flawed logic! You left out humans and pollution altogether. It's a known fact that whatever is behind these phenomena, humans are to blame.
Get with the program damn it!! - TheBirdinator, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7hay guise time to rain on the parade
http://www.exitmundi.nl/poleshift.htm
and I know someone said this, but the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world in 2012; its the end to their equivalent of a millenium or decade or year or something; with the exception of Y2K no one really freaked out when they noticed there were only a few days left in December and they had to buy a new calendar for the next year; same deal here - one7, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7They're already banging away at their keyboards. This is Digg, isn't it?
- tempest, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7Al Gore is a bit busy at the moment.
- cyzum, on 07/05/2008, -4/+10December 21, 2012.
- jamessavik, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8Nope- you are just another environmentally brainwashed *****-wad who has been given an unrealistic view of nature.
Mother earth is a bitch who would quietly ignore any one of her thousands of predators eating you for breakfast. - charbo187, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6their calendar just ends on DEC 31st 2012
- Derelict267, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7Yeah if we get hit by large amounts of solar wind we'll pretty much be *****...yay cancer.
- thcobbs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Its a time frame issue. Earth's magnetic field flip-flops over several thousands of years. Can a politician say the same?
Also, comparing a Politician's Flip-flop with the Earth's magnetic field is like comparing a cpu with the migratory pattern of ducks. - noahhoward, on 07/05/2008, -3/+8"This radiation does not influence temperatures on Earth."
What? How exactly would more radiation NOT affect temperatures? - nixfu, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Oh yes...it must be HUMANS fault...because we cause everything right? U R Brainwashed by Al Gore.
- mazza558, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5UBUNTUANIUM?
- fwuzzle, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Did you notice he said climate change, not global warming.
Way to jump the gun. - wolferz, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5both would allow more uv radiation. The magnetic field is responsible for most of that protection.
- RyomaNagare, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5Think of this peach as the earth, and this blowtorch as the sun, this will happen, if we don't go to the center of the earth and blow a nuke....
- teh_techie, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5... which can be taken out by this radiation too...
- breezytrees, on 07/05/2008, -1/+6I was about to say "needs /sarcasm tag," then I read through your comment history.
educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal - hiikeeba, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4If the magnetic field collapses for a significant amount of time, we won't have to worry about Global Warming. We won't be able to.
- toyrifle1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4"The particles, however, do affect technical and radio equipment and can damage electronic equipment on satellites and airplanes, Olsen of the Danish space center said."
- Ninh, on 07/05/2008, -13/+17One wonders if this is the reason for the observed global temperature changes.
- pauliusuza, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4It probably does exist, but is impossible to obtain, like somewhere in deep cosmos.
- wolferz, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5So is the next ice age. *shrug* wonder if this stuff could be related?
@danharlow
if they are related phenomenon then it is far from off topic... you're ::assuming:: that they aren't - danharlow, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Looks like your magnetic field got flipped LONG ago.
- earthling3000, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Actually, the Mayans didn't believe in Jesus either. But you are right the 2012 marks the end of a big cycle on the Mayan calendar.
- SquigglyP, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4there were no temperature record for the last shift, which was quite some time ago.
- xGORDOx, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3^ best comments yet, I wish I could digg you guys a hundred times.
- ZeroFive1, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Diggers love Mayan theology as much as they hate Christian theology.
I find it strange, actually. - AutoTom, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3we're talking about earth here not the sun
- jamessavik, on 07/05/2008, -5/+8I wonder... is it ozone depletion or magnetic field weakness that is allowing more UV to make it to the ground in some parts of the world.
The earths magnetic field is vital to life on our planet. Without it, we would roast in the UV and x-rays from our sun and its corona that the magnetic field currently filters out. -
