- sonicpentatonic, on 07/14/2009, -5/+46buried for misleading "giant" in the title.
- Ichigo101, on 07/14/2009, -1/+29Hhhmm maybe they are scared of something that caused the earthquake. It might be a monster from deep in the ocean that woke up because of the earthquake.

https://souwaimaths.wikispaces.com/file/view/Giant ... - bossm4n, on 07/14/2009, -2/+25Those would make for some serious calamari.
- Jooze, on 07/14/2009, -2/+244 feet is not a giant squid...
- norman619, on 07/14/2009, -0/+22Those aren't giant squid (Architeuthis dux). They are likely Humbolt squid since they live in that area. The giant squid is MUCH larger than the squid we are seeing in that video. The quake likely released gases or chemicals into the water that these squid aren't handling well.
- scarlettletter, on 07/14/2009, -9/+29Had that been in Asia there would be no signs of them as soon as they got there! Dinner!
- Fishn2, on 07/14/2009, -0/+18No, you're wrong, I trust livescience more than this blog, since it's the source...
http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/etc/090712- ...
"Dozens of large creatures called jumbo Humboldt squid washed up on La Jolla Shores beach in Southern California Saturday after a 4.0 earthquake, centered offshore, shook homes in the area."
Try RTFSources - mexter, on 07/14/2009, -0/+16Probably committing suicide due to their lack of inclusion in Watchmen.
- doctechnical, on 07/14/2009, -1/+13GOJIRA!
- PowderedToasty, on 07/14/2009, -0/+12Some might even say they are giant.
- enozten, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11yeah, because we don't eat squid in the US
- N00F, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8I believe they are Humboldt Squid. A large species. They have a particular reddish colour.
- smackydoodle, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7I hope you're Business101, because if not copying and pasting comments from the article's comments on here is pretty sad for you.
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6Yeah but: "There's definitely something cephalopodic about that"
Doesn't quite have the same ring to it. - andyb747, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6just think.... in 20 million years those will be squirrels !!
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -2/+8There's definitely something fishy about that.
- Jooze, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6YOU SPELLED ***** RONG
- ducttape36, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6cloverfi...
- gruvn, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5I don't care what the article headline says - they're not giant squid. Probably Humboldts. Any crazy navy sonar in the the area?
- cJw314, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5/agree
I always expect to see GIGANTIC squid when I read "giant squid"; some 30 foot long monstrous demon-bastard invertebrate.
But... no. Just oversized calamari. -.- - pfhayter, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5But are they colossal?
- viper001, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Those are just normal squid. A giant squid looks more like this:
http://www.sayyadfamily.com/umar/wp-content/upload ... - mojoel, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Maybe the earthquake was a trap?
- jayp900, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was the earthquake
- angusm, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Yes, those look like Humboldt squid, aka jumbo squid, aka dosidicus gigas. Apparently the population in California waters has been increasing recently.
I got to watch a dissection of a Humboldt squid recently. All I can tell you is that dead, and out of the water, the critters are just a sort of floppy mess that comes apart surprisingly easily. The guy doing the dissection pulled out the beak and the sucker rings with his fingers, and only really needed scissors to cut through the mantle.
I shot a video of the process, but I haven't bothered uploading it because I don't think it's going to be the surprise viral video hit of the summer. Although perhaps if I sped it up and used Yakkety-Sax as the soundtrack ... - tj111, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4http://is.gd/1yxnt
- lroche, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Baby giant squid are bigger than those
- KF6BBL, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Why do people continue to link to a re-blog of a re-blog? WTF?
The original story is here: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Giant-Squid-W ...
and actually contains facts, locations, and eyewitness accounts. Not that I like evil NBC anymore than the next hater, but by the time the story gets rehashed 2 times to avoid plagarism, it was devoid of real information - warcin, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Who the hell did the sound on the video. I usually only wear one headphone whne listening to these videos but the commentator was only left channel and the people were only on the right
- norman619, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3You should post it anyway. It should be about education not about whether or not it will be the next big thing on YouTube.
- RC212V, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3The fact that there was an undersea earthquake might have done something to mess with their sense of direction. There are apparently a good number of animals that navigate by detecting and interpreting the Earth's magnetic field so maybe the quake disoriented them.
For those saying it could be due to Navy sonar, that is highly unlikely since squid don't use echolocation. - pfhayter, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4YOU SPILLED WRONG WRONG, FUKK!
- mikemehak, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I like the people throwing squids back in the water like they will somehow save them.
If the squids got disoriented enough in the first place to wash ashore, it's going to happen again! - IClavdivs, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2pretty sure that was dolphins not squid.
- uminchu, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3I would have taken a couple!
set up a grill right there on the beach and have a PARTY!! - WootZoot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2If it was a toxic spill, then a lot more than just squid would be dying.
- Twohooves, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Proof? Documentation?
- MikeyMoose, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I, for one, welcome our new cephalopod overlords...
- bubba9999, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1old school stereo
- dekuscrub, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1*Bloop
- Crocuspokus, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Why does the news report switch the audio from left to right channels for no reason? I'm glad you know how stereo sound works, but it's pretty damn annoying.
- WootZoot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1San Diego. I was there. Was a weird combo of worrying and awesome. And stinky. Worrying, awesome, and stinky.
- pfhayter, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I don't know why you're getting dugg down. Occam's razor after all.
- WootZoot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1baby giant squid are itty bitty teeny weeny. there was that discovery channel special where a crew spent weeks dredging up swarms of different microscopic newborn squid and tried to find a baby giant squid. They found one but killed it. I wanted my hour back.
- fakesinatra, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1They're not what I think of as a "giant squid." The title here on digg is misleading.
- datastorageguy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Now that's actually amusing.
- malakite33, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1As soon as I saw "People were trying to throw them back" I knew it wasn't giant squid.....that would be a fun sight to see though. "Come on everyone lets help the giant squid back in the Wate.....AAAHHHHH" *nom nom nom*
- cre8tivate, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1La Jolla is a favorite for local divers. Although these Humboldts are not "giant" squid, they are very aggressive and there have been several attacks on divers over the last few days. Most divers have decided to stay out of the water until they disappear.
