- badqat, on 10/28/2009, -0/+22I believe they need to figure out how to make the 'skeeters think we don't excrete this chemical.
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -1/+16... what?
- antc1986, on 10/28/2009, -0/+15Nonanal? Sounds like my ex-wife!
- Bactame, on 10/28/2009, -0/+13From Wiki here is a short description of nonanal.
Nonanal, also called nonanaldehyde or pelargonaldehyde, is an alkyl aldehyde. It has a strong fruity or floral odor and is used in flavors and perfume. It also produced by the human body. Scientists at the University of California, Davis, have identified nonanal as a compound that attracts Culex mosquitoes - KennMac, on 10/28/2009, -0/+7Unless they just stop feeding on humans and continue feeding off of the hundreds of other animals that satisfy their diet just fine.
- oep4, on 10/28/2009, -3/+7digg this if you HATE mosquitos
- commenter01, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2the substance is called Nonanal... non-anal. get it?
- Konwashere, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2I will never forgive mosquitoes for forcing the take down of tire swings! They shall kneel before ZOD!
- zclone, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3i thought it was heat that made them attract...
- ShadyCroquet, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2They are attracted to body heat. And CO2. And apparently Nonanal. They may also like dark colors, movement, and octenol (found in sweat), but it depends on the person, species, and various other factors. In my region there are roughly 27 different species that are naturally attracted to different things and in different concentrations. For instance, those that prefer amphibians aren't really attracted to CO2.
But DEET still works pretty good with long sleeves. - ajkrik, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2As good a reason to divorce as any!
- budser, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Mirror anyone? I can understand saying we've cured cancer but this time digg has gone too far. Mosquitoes are the bane of my existence :^/
- homercles337, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2Nope. CO2. Just stop breathing if you think a mosquito is near...
- TheMachine1, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1I got an error first try. Then the second try it worked.
- nbx909, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately nonanaldehyde (Nonanal) isn't going to have any real safe (for human skin) reactions. When I say safe, I mean the reactants are going to be a bit harsh, meaning no repellent based on neutralizing nonanal.
- sanman, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2Or else have a mosquito-trapping machine that emits lots of this chemical to attract them.
http://www.mosquitomagnet.com/advice/keys-to-succe ... - oep4, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1whats the double entendre?
- Crazysticks, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Have fun riding the gravy train. Which way will this double entendre go?
- Ghostwo, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2The ones that find some new chemical to target will survive and reproduce, eventually nullifying the effect...
- hereticoftruth, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Now I know an antonym for Uranus. But CO2 really does come first as a mosquito attractant as observed by the many mosquitoes that love to hang out around the floor freezers in Minnesota supermarkets. CO2 is heavier than air and is more attracted to water and ice than the other components of air such as nitrogen and oxygen so it collects in those freezers and mosquitoes collect around the edges with their snouts pointed inwards.
- ucdbunny, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Good stuff.
- mitrovarr, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Insects don't reproduce at the speed of say, bacteria. They'll evolve resistance very slowly if at all.
- PhoenixReborn, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1My hometown, thank you very much.
- JessaLyn3, on 10/28/2009, -0/+0super
- thegrantman, on 10/28/2009, -8/+5No anal?
"I promise, it won't hurt any more than a mosquito bite."
Yeah, I set myself up. - Pinkertinkle, on 10/28/2009, -8/+1UC where?
