- Ainast, on 10/12/2007, -26/+78the crime rate in houston has gone up 25%. The people from NO took advantage of our texas hospitality and trashed the rooms. Its almost been a year since the hurricane hit. How long does it take to get your ***** together or at least get a job in another city.
- Obscuruz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Ok..to start off I do have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molec. Biol. and I did my thesis on protein synthesis. Now I have never seen these fibers, but from the images that I have googled and seen from links above, they do look acrylic in nature as others suggested. Other things that look acrylic are in the polyvinyl category of synthetics. My biggest beef, knowing very little about this disease, is what organism manufactures such a substance biologically? Spiders do manufacture spider webs (which can appear acrylic under magnification) and they are chemically complex and simple at the same time, so it's not improbable that a living organism makes such a substance. Again I am assuming these are acyclic in nature, maybe they are not, and feel completely different than I assume. The colors also are a problem, that blue is just so "blue" and the red as well. Maybe photoshoped some?
What about something living under your skin? Sure no problem, many parasitic diseases exist, and are very well documented. Just go to www.pubmed.com and search away.
Again it comes down to one thing, what is the chemical structure of the fibers produced? That is actually easy to answer. HPLC, mass spec., densitometry, does it contain DNA, etc.. will all indicate what the fiber is made of. It could be one huge protein chain, though kind of improbable.
Once you know what the fiber comprises both chemically and structurally then you know what you are dealing with. This is not hard to achieve scientifically.
The fact that many of the afflicted come from the same region is interesting as hell though. If you really want to impress us, film it at night, if you can, and upload to youtube or any other sharing site.
Sorry to get technical. - trebor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44images of the fibers: http://www.morgellons.org/images.html

brb, Delusional parasitosis - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -21/+46Ainast, I feel your pain. The same thing happened in Knoxville. They filled up the housing projects, started stealing from us and shooting at our cops. Not too surprised given the horrendous crime rate in New Orleans.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28You people who believe this are idiots.
Look at the ***** site: http://www.morgellonsusa.com/
Why is there a stick guy floating around?
It's a hoax - if you had scabs with fibers coming out, a doctor wouldn't just dismiss it. You could sue for malpractice if that were to happen. Not to mention they would keep the people who supposedly claim to have this and monitor everything inside of them, taking blood/tissue samples, xrays, all sorts of *****.
Biologically, it's impossible to have what they're describing and have doctors "perplexed" - there would be evidence all over the place.
It's not real - ***** wake up. It does make a good tabloid story, though. - IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+221. Article with Nurse Practioner, not a Cheif of Infectious diseases
2. 50% references found on bible thumping websites with apocalypse proclamation on top of page.
3. Images that look like acrylic fibers.
4. No fever, no weight loss, only scratching and feeling of bugs under the skin.
5. It all points to psychosis and post-alcoholic hallucinations (cocaine bugs).
6. The skin lesions look like Lyme's disease (Target lesions) - bigd063, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Sounds like a job for House.

- megashaun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19" Wymore examines the fibers, scabs and other samples from Morgellon's patients to try and find the disease's cause."
He leads a charmed life. - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -49/+66Nothing good ever comes out of Texas anymore.
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Mainstream medical professionals don't believe Morgellons is real.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I swear Mulder and Scully encountered something like this one time...
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16As opposed to dying from non-deadly symptoms?

Wasn't this an episode of X-Files? - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This is what happens when you don't clean out your belly button lint.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Scary indeed, I swear that if I keep reading about stuff like this I'm going to turn into a hypochondriac.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12From Wikipedia:
"[Dr. May Berenbaum] likened the study to finding the face of the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich on eBay."
That made my day.
Had me going for a while, but the total lack of evidence and the easy explanation of delusional parasitosis sealed it for me. Little bit of Occam's Razor sorts that one out... - piggy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The problem I'm seeing so far is that a lot of these fibers don't even look biological in origin. For example, here's a picture of these supposed fibers: http://www.morgellonsusa.com/sitebuilder/images/WELCOME_TO_MORGELLONS_USA-760x910.jpg
which looks more like velcro or lint than anything else. If you combine this with psychosis or non-medical professionals examining the patients then of course there will be skepticism within the medical community; a healthy skepticism. - smoothoperatah, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15my boss's friend invited a family of New Orleans's "refugees" to live with him at this house. two days later they rented a uhaul, filled it with as much stuff from their host's house as they could and left.
good people. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -34/+44Except the people who took in all those folks from NO after the hurricane... right... how quickly we forget the good that men do.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The article mentions a guy named Travis...that guy. He recently committed suicide.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16This is a mental illness along the lines of munchhausen-by-proxy syndrome. The foreign material in their wounds, and the wounds themselves, are self inflicted.
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15It must be far worse to get a disease that doctors don't understand. And worse yet is that since the doctors don't understand it, it doesn't exist and you must be a nutjob.
- shirashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Delusional parasitosis.
Read the wikipedia article, much more accurate and better written than this dugg article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgellons - UnderLoK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Most of the pics look like a piece of lint from a cheap rug.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12You don't need to have a PhD to understand basic biology and parasitic infections.
There are VERY basic procedures in place to detect when something is awry in your body, whether it's blood/tissue/waste samples, xrays, ultrasounds, etc.
If you had this infection, flat out, it would show up somewhere. A doctor wouldn't see you with ***** of scabs and just go "Oh, you're making this up" unless you were.
Have you even had a class in human biology?
Really, use your head - if you walked into a doctor's office with something like this on your arm - http://www.morgellonsusa.com/images/sks.jpg - and it was parasitic, it WOULD show up. It wouldn't randomly go hide because you were getting it checked out. From physical cuts and scabs alone they could detect what it is or what the source is. - devzer0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This story is bogus. "Morgellons disease" is known to medical doctors as a delusion by patients who are mentally ill. This "disease" has been reported all over the US, but has *absolutely no basis in science.* Patients who report having it cannot demonstrate any actual symptoms; they always mysteriously "clear up" before doctors can examine them. Google this if you need more info. The actual disease here is mental illness.
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What I don't understand that if all this is real then of all the hundreds of pictures that resulted from a Google Image search, I'm either seeing rashes on human skin (which could be just about anything), or fibers that are unattached to anything (and could easily be carpet fibers). If there are really "100's" of cases, then surely at least one of those would have had pictures of the fibers growing out of the skin.
- static416, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I didn't say doctors are never wrong, I said that they are far better trained than the patients to diagnose these things, thats why we go to doctors and don't just sit at home and try to figure it out ourselves.
Frankly, if I'm going to take someones word on whether or not this is real, I'm going to pick the guy with the PhD, not Joe-dumbass. - miketrin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hoax, please people, do a little research, this is bogus.
- piggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8 @ clickwir: despite photographic "evidence," I don't believe in the Loch Ness monster either.
sorry :( . I'm sure these people have a medical problem, but mutlicolored fibers growing out of the skin isn't it. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sounds fake. if you follow the link to Dr. Wymore's comments, he doesn't seem to say definitively wheter it is anything more than a hoax. http://www.morgellons.org/rwupdate.html
Then there is the fact that---while one person claims to have had it for 12 years, others for five years....we have never heard anything about it until now. It has all the characterstics of a hoax.
Story marked as inaccurate. Nice try! - Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7White trash meth-heads.
- nsmitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I heard that the symptoms are aggravated by Dihydrogen Monoxide. Very dangerous stuff! http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html
- static416, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think its hilarious that these people, and some of the people in this post, think that they are more adept at identifying disease than hospitals full of doctors with 6-10 years of medical university education behind them.
I mean give me a break, this is clearly just nutjobs who are convinced "there are bugs in my skin". If there was any validity to this at all, it would be very obvious. - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its drugs. $0.05USD says they are all crystal meth heads. Ive seen this ***** before when people will dig up all kinds of weird ***** (lint, rice, dust) as bugs. Its almost amusing in a twisted way to give them tweasers & a jar, and tell them to go and 'find the bugs'.
Sad to say they are all just fscking crazy, and need to get to rehab ASAP!
Remember when you are on some really strong drugs they alter your perception of reality... Ever read Phillip K Dick? Some amazing fiction, but he was clearly insane. - Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Don't you mean Munchausen's Syndrome? The 'by proxy' version refers to causing injury to someone else for attention...the base disorder is when you cause injury to yourself.
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7mmm, sounds like BS. Atleast that article does.
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, that message board is insane. Who the ***** is Pedoman? That guy needs some serious mental help, or perhaps a bullet to the face.
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5unless there are some other reliable sources, ill just chalk this up to fearmongering
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the fibers are cellulose. These folks are just growing cotton.
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I'm going to go with Alien parasite for the win!
Seriously, this is probably legitimate. There are lots of diseases out there that you wouldn't hear of until it was too late. - jeruvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is an excellent link. Perhaps the fibers are going to take over the earth. We thought it would be complex beings that attack us, but looks like it will be little fibers from the inside out. Once we've all killed ourselves to relieve the pain Earth will become a large ball of lint floating through space.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You are aware that it is possible to chemically analyse a fiber and tell exactly how it was made and what it is composed of, right? Also, apparently no doctors have actually witnessed fibers being pulled out of the skin. That is a major blow to the whole idea. There are no actual photos showing fibers being pulled out of the skin either. There are reports of fibers that vary in size from microscopic to spaghetti and of different colors, even including purple. If it is indeed the waste product of a parasite, I would expect much more consistency and I would expect it to be black or brown, not rainbow colored. The color of waste has a lot to do with what was eaten, now think about how that applies here.
I call BS on this disease. - eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is moronic on so many levels.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If 90% of the doctors don't believe them, it has a snowballs chance in hell of existing. If 100% of the doctors, even the crazy ones that tell your insurance company that you're "hurt" and unable to work, don't believe you, it doesn't exist.
Sorry, I'm going to go with Doctors over "Internet Diagnosis" any day of the week. If you read further, you'd find every single person who has this "disease" has self diagnosed, i.e. it's not real. -
