Scientifically, apples and oranges are actually very similar.

- kysle, on 10/12/2007, -12/+38Thats actually really sad.
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+38I take mdma/e once in a while it's great fun. The amount of FUD around it is terrible, but it's not surprising considering that governments can't just tax it like alcohol and tabacco. Considering there have been significantly less deaths from e than there have with the two other "legal" drugs I've mentioned I don't see the danger of it.
The first thing people will state is that significantly less people take e than drink or smoke, while this is true the amount of people who DO take e are greater than you would think. I live in the UK which has a massive club culture and as a result every weekend hundreds of thousands of people take drugs every weekend (e or otherwise) and suffer no ill effects.
People need to come out of their highschool propaganda mode - drugs are bad mmmkay - and actually look at the evidence. Some drugs are bad, some are ok. Some are legal, some are not. The ones that aren't legal are not necessarily the most harmful or dangerous strangely. Alcohol and smoking ruins millions of lives.
While the long term effects of e are not known we are quite sure what long term alcohol consumption can lead to, or long term smoking. I'll take my chance with the illegal drugs.
oh ps that guys a dope. If you take that much of anything legal or otherwise then you're going to end up being not quite right in the head. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Ecstasy does prevent you from getting excess water out of your body. It is ever so hard to pee while under the influence.
The thing you have to watch out for is how much you're exerting yourself by dancing and whatever, and drink the appropriate amount of water.
Leah Betts was at a house party, presumably not the best place to be dancing. She was not getting rid of any of the water she was putting into herself, and that's why she died. It wouldn't have been fatal if she has been sweating from dancing. If you're not dancing, you should sip water every 10 mins or so, and no more. If you are dancing, no more than a pint every hour or so.
Her death was caused by inappropriate information. Get this folks: People will do drugs, get over it. The key to saving lives isn't "Don't do this it will kill you!" it's "Don't do this without taking care that X and Y are satisfied, else you may endanger your life."
There is such a thing as responsible drug use, as long as you don't go over the top like the guy in the article did, and as long as you're doing your research into what you're taking before you take it.
Just my two penneth, which I'm sure I'll get buried for. - rakista, on 10/12/2007, -14/+32Yeah and ritalin and prozac and all those prescription drugs have no long term effects either. MDMA in moderation is not going to give you permament brain damage. Alchohol will though and it will show up on brain scans, your brain will shrink.
MDMA was designed as a medical drug and it is still used as such for intense therapy. It is a lot safer than a lot of the other drugs out there that ***** with your neurotransmitters like trycyclics and SNRIs. - munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17see, the trouble with pills is, they're just so damn moreish.
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Depends. Going rate last weekend was £10 for 3.
Er... Of course, that's what I've heard. - mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I would respond to this topic but I'm tripping balls right now.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13There's a pill you can take to help you imagine it. ;)
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think it would have a more profound effect on the US if they did legalise them and let Darwin sort 'em out.
- WPLXB70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's almost more of an ad FOR ecstasy use - something like 'I did it for half my life, and look at me, I'm not dead!'
- gargantuan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17only people who have taken experienced X/e/ecstasy/pills can comment on this one. But know this, I'd sooner sit in a club filled with loved up clubbers than a room full of drunks. It's a great drug and in moderation is one of lifes truly wonderful luxuries.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13..and he's still LIVING??
- Xalior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Bull.
At UK prices it's easy to aquire 10 pills for 25 without even trying to shop around or find a good price. If you were buying, say, 50, that would easily pull the prices down even further -- and an average that rate 50 would last less than 5 days anyway, 2 days at his peak.
Let's say he took 300 a week -- which seems reasonable -- and factor in bulk buying -- we're talking about not very much money, even at the peak. That's easily the sort of budget someone could fund without being a big drug dealer or taking to crime, if they had a part time job and some other source of income like a student loan or benifit scam....
-Dx - wolphcry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How much $$ does 40,000 X pills cost? wow
- r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What's sad is that this guy has quote, "extreme memory problems" and a myriad of other mental problems, yet we're supposed to believe he remembers how many pills he took?
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8English pint glasses aren't retarded - the extra 4oz is to leave room for the beer's head, so you get a full pint of beer, plus the head. If the glass was exactly a pint, you would be paying for a pint of beer and only getting 12oz beer and 4oz of head....
- NickyBatts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think 25 pills a day of ANYTHING would be harmful to ones health....
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i bet he's depressed as hell
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10side effects also include massive *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+740,000 pills of asprin and you'd have liver and stomach problems for sure...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Drugs are not bad for you if you understand what you're putting in your body, how much you're putting in, what it should and should not mix with, and if done in moderation.
Alcohol and tobacco use kills far far more people. Ecstasy by itself, like pot, has never attributed to someone's death, other than being mixed with other chems (such as when it's cut with speed).
That being said, i don't feel drug use should be a lifestyle. I don't have a problem with ravers, drug users of any sort. I do have a problem with people who use far too much of anything. Addicts, whether to legal drugs or illegal ones, are just sad.
The amount of propoganda invested in drugs is amazing, the amount of money invested by privitized prison lobby groups to continue the drug war, is amazing. The drug war is failed, those who wish to control someone's life, and punish them for victimless crimes.. are morons on a high horse who don't know ***** about ***** half the time.
What's amazing to me.. is the number of people that don't buy the FUD of microsoft, yet just eat it up when it comes to the crap that comes out of DARE, DEA, and your local police department. If you are going to question the structures around you, why not follow it through and question your government, the corporations in all industries, moralities, and religions. - mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What you have to understand though is while it may be illegal in the US in general the punishment for posession varies from state to state. In my state for example (NJ), being caught with any amount and you automatically loose your license for 2 years. That's right, even if you had a seed in your pocket while you were walking and got busted you loose your license. But then go 5 miles away to NYC and anything 25 grams and under is at most a $100 fine and even being caught with up to 2 ounces the worst that can happen is 0-3 months in prision and up to $500 in fines. It all depends on the states mentality of marijuana useage. Give it a few years and you will start to see more states giving in to being more lienant because I don't care what anyone 40+ years old tells me but if you lived anywhere from 1960-1979 YOU SMOKED MORE POT THAN CHEECH AND CHONG. I think I'm going to move out to Louisiana where you can have up to 100 pounds of marijuana and the worst you can get is 0-6 months and $500 fine.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Mm hmm, go ahead doctor, tell me more about your observations of pot inducing schitzophrenia.
- sonicdevo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree that it's stupid how some people label certian drugs as dangerous, with little proof (::cough:: cannabis ::cough::). However, this is not the case with MDMA. I work in a hospital, in the radiology department. One night we had a girl brought in from a club, who (according to her friends) had taken ONE X tab. This was the first tab she had ever taken. You should have seen the hole in this poor girl's brain. She had a hole that showed up on a CT scan, and the radiologist remarked to me that it would be a miracle if she ever spoke again.
Obviously, this is an unusually bad reaction... but do you really want to take the chance that this could happen to you? It's a stupid chemical that you're taking to have fun... it's not worth the risk associated with it. - gbeirne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+825 a day?
Christ. It only takes me four to end up rolling around on the floor with a deeply unattractive woman. - numptydumpty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"If Pacman had affected us as kids we'd be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music."

- Marcus Brigstocke - chimona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7this guy must have been a big time dealer, no other way he could have supported that habit.
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well I retract my previous statement on wanting to move to Louisiana because I just found out that marijuana use in Alaska is LEGAL! (well....kind of). You are allowed to grow and use it in your home legally but you cann't buy or sell it.
Here is the penalties based on every state in the US.

HE decided to ***** up his life; and don't give me any of that crap about dependence. drug use has to start somewhere. it's only if you were born that way do i feel sorry for you.

They should have called him "Mr. X" - lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@Xiol
I do mention in my comment that a lot less people take a drug like e compared to alcohol/tobacco. However I don't think it's comparing apples and oranges, as in my opinion if you legalized e you wouldn't see a dramatic upsurge of deaths from it. That's just what I believe though, a scientist could present evidence to prove me wrong.
27 people died in the uk from taking e in 2000. an estimated 114,000 die every year from smoking. 2.2% of the UK population take e. If 2.2% of the uk nation smoked do you think there would only be 27 deaths a year? An estimated five hundred thousand to 2 mill pills are taken every weekend (not all by me!) by people. I've said it once and I'll say it again 99% of the stuff you hear in the popular press is FUD. Fear, Uncertainty, Despair. If you're from the UK you probably remember Leah Betts. When I was school it was plastered all over the papers, it was ridiculous. And they were all giving the advice - wrongly - to drink lots of water if you take e.
The one thing I'm not saying is e isn't without dangers. Patently if people have died as a result of taking it then there is a danger to it. However on the whole - while I can't talk about the long term effects - its pretty safe. - SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I heard this guy also has the worlds largest Glo-Stick collection.
- xaxxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FTFA:
Water-poisoning
Panicking users, fearing they are overdosing, drink too much water and provoke hyponaetraemia (water-poisoning). Leah Betts died after drinking 14 pints in just 90 minutes.
14 pints = 14 * 16oz = 224oz = 7/4 gallon. Divide that by 3/2 (90 minutes/60 minutes/hour) and it ends up being 1 1/6 gallon / hour. That's a lot, but it doesn't seem like should be enough to be fatal. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Xalior, if you don't think 5 pills a weekend is very high for a starting dose of any street drug, you might want to walk over to your local clinic and find out when they hold their narcotics anonymous meetings.
- Foofy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think it speaks volumes that most of the anti-X posts have been buried. People rail against those who aren't open-minded about our unpopular/controversial views, then turn around and do the same when the other view becomes the "unpopular" one.
The more we change the more we stay the same, I guess. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hah! Something America isn't good at. :P
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You'd have to be insane to begin with if you start using any drug in the amount he started on.

www.pillreports.com - jamesvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is actually surprising. Many of this guy's problems were improving and some stopped when he stopped smoking weed. Besides the jaw thing, all the other side effects can be linked to his depression (which the x surely increased). I think taking hallucinogens is a bad idea for psychiatric reasons, but I must say this: consider the bodily effects of consuming 40,000 of many other items. For example, had he eaten 40,000 Big Macs during that time, he'd likely have died of a heart attack--surely he'd have heart problems. And smoking 40,000 cigarettes, even over so many years, he would have severe respiratory problems AND would have or only be months from having a typical smoking-related cancer. And of course had he eaten 40,000 pennies or marbles, even at his slow pace, he'd be dead too.
- crunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yep, everyone acknoledges that pills are nowhere near as strong as they used to be, russian ones are probably like ours used to be.
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually "Mr. e" would be more appropriate. Nobody calls it "X" that I'm aware of and besides, then you could call him "Mr. e Man". ;o)
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's all a personal choice. If the person is willing to take the risks of using ANY kind of drug then let them. They know the risks of what they are doing (a majority of the time) and if they wind up ***** up their life, then that's their problem. It's the same thing with tobacco. The tobacco industry know that even though they put out all these ad's (the tobacco companies themselves put these ads out) for why smoking is bad and the risks involved with smoking people are still going to smoke. It's their personal choice, whether it be a good one or bad.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6OK that's 1 pill every 30 minutes for 9 years on average.
that's ***** insane. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know, that's a damn good point.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4 People are paranoid about legal, well researched, well known drugs and won't take them.
More and more people choose to take herbal concoctions with only anecdotal evidence they may work.
Some guy says a pill is Ecstasy or "X" and people can't get enough of it.
- bede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder if there's a Digg reader out there somewhere right now thinking, 40,000? Pah, I'm gonna top that.
I was a little too old for Es when they became popular. I'll stick to me ganja. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've never used Ecstacy, but from reading this article it doesn't sound very dangerous. It sounds like most of the people who have died from using it really died because they drank too much water or got themselves overheated. Avoiding excessive amounts of water and heatstroke isn't too diffficult, especially if a sober friend is watching out for you.
