- lordmetroid, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7Hu? There isn't any significant difference!
- mal1964, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5I read this story with my feet.
- AManWithNoName, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Interesting experiment, but I fail to see the significance of it in the grand scheme...Oh well, it'll give me 5 minutes worth of small talk I guess. Dugg.
- Aurabolt, on 03/31/2008, -2/+6Yeah... this article is pretty pointless.
- turbogiraffe, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2I work with Colin Ellard (he did the study this article is based on). Studies like this can show us how we understand and navigate space, something that is important for designers. Currently, we are working on a related study in which we are having subjects navigate three-dimension virtual spaces (in this case houses) to see how they react within different spatial archetypes.
Its pretty sweet, the models were done in 3dstudio using vray, so they are much higher quality then people are used to seeing in a virtual environment (outside of crysis :-)) It is actually a lot like a highly immersive FPS in many ways, but you navigate by actually walking around. The believability of the environment is extremely high...when I'm navigating within it I often find myself reaching for something (a railing, counter, etc) to steady myself which only exists virtually.
The study is being done at the University of Waterloo, in Canada.
- Vapor17, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3So this is what science is?
- boydrew, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2It doesn't even mention how it affects brain activity which would be the ultimate decider in this whole thing...
- futureisours, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2who cares.
- BBlank, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1Interesting stuff. I remember hearing about NFL QB Drew Brees doing this example where he could close his eyes and navigate around, training for knowing exactly where things will be as plays progress.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2Meh
- RoloTomasie, on 03/31/2008, -3/+3What an illuminating study!
Buried as lame. - WorcesterM, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0wow, the scientists spent so much time trying to study something we already know "So humans appear to be more comfortable using the visual system to judge distance than using the motion of their bodies"
- jerseyjake, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0My question is, whats stopping the people that are gauging distance with their feet...from counting their steps?
- gkiltz, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0Not when we can keep them out of our mouths!!
Hint Hint Hint! - DonJohnTom, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1i heard if your stranded in a large area like a desert, and you think your walking straight in one direction over time you'll actually be walking in a circle because your left foot is more prominent then your right causing your path to curve over long distances.
- forsight, on 03/31/2008, -3/+1mmm..kay...buried.
- boydrew, on 03/31/2008, -3/+0wow even with a fast thoughtless response, you fail...
- Elamen, on 03/31/2008, -7/+1I refuse to give into your mind tricks!
- jimmy17, on 03/31/2008, -10/+2***** : (
- leerayIG88, on 03/31/2008, -13/+2i have a foot fetish.... *fap* *fap* *fap*
