- Mujokan, on 10/30/2009, -1/+14"challenges Western domination of the history of science and technology"
Study the history of science in the West and you learn loads about Indian and Arabic sources, as well as Greek. Chinese stuff doesn't get so much coverage, but in engineering and other areas they were amazing from a really early time.
Fine to boost India contributions in Indian education, but we don't have too many illusions about doing everything ourselves. Still, when you get to the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, the West has a lot to be proud about in science. - bluenile, on 10/29/2009, -2/+14but the real question is who invented the boob job?
- lavis88, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9whoever wins the war writes the history
- wentwhere, on 10/30/2009, -0/+7Does anyone with half a brain actually still think that Western culture singlehandedly pioneered every scientific field? I guess I don't know the situation in India and yeah a ton of rednecks and/or other idiots are probably pretty oblivious, but I feel like most people are aware that Asia and the Asian subcontinent were huge hotbeds of progress way before a lot of the Western cultural epicenters.
I think it's awesome to have national pride and India definitely deserves it, this article just needs to be a little more disciplined and not toss around the word "invented" so lightly. It's like the Western explorers all "discovering" every new land they came upon. - arkwald, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6I think the idea that the west is some paragon of advancement is pretty old and outdated. There is lots of evidence that ground breaking events had occurred elsewhere.
- YJiang, on 10/30/2009, -2/+7Western domination of the history of science and technology?
Must have forgotten those few centuries called, I don't know, the Dark Ages?
... - iJump, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3Maybe this should answer your question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_implant#Histor ... - tushyd, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3Of course they invented it!
Look at the wikipedia entry for Rhinoplasty: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoplasty
It's pretty well known that Sasruta's text on medicine (Sushruta Samhita) contained rhinoplasty - robbob, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3by the looks of the sphinx, it was the Egyptians

- hulkamaniaz, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2Science is a fluid medium. You can't quantify it by saying "German Science" or "British Science". Avicenna's "Canon of Medicine" was written in 1025 and used in Europe till 1890s because it was just the best reference out there. But all cultures have "Dark Ages"; the West just procured and gathered most of the knowledge of that time and developed it to the level we are familiar with today.
- tushyd, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1This was way before then.
- boss007, on 10/30/2009, -2/+3necessity is mother of discovery/invention !!
- master69better, on 10/30/2009, -3/+4Our third biggest invention since the number zero and the Kamasutra
- PiddlyD, on 10/30/2009, -2/+3I'm not sure what the point is. There is an evolution of knowledge in Western civilization that has been consistent, documented, and has been unlost for the last 2000 years of recorded history. Anything before that - hell... the same aliens that built the pyramids in Egypt and South America may have been doing rhinoplasty in the Indus valley and using the batteries found in Iraq to power their equipment. They could have invented the Ford Model T 10,000 years ago. That doesn't change the fact that their modern infrastructure throughout most of the interior of their nation makes Mexico city look like the height of modern development.
- drex8, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1I hate those plastic surgery reality shows. I watched Nip/Tuck once and it grossed me out.
- malex, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1I thought it was French soldiers who made that modification...
- tushyd, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1What? using the worth ethnocentric is pretentious and arrogant? I'm sorry that I knew a word that worked in the context of an argument.
My argument was not against western civilization, pretty much every civilization has done something wonderful to ***** over the rest of the world.
Did you not read the post I was replying to? I was commenting on the fact that there has been LOST KNOWLEDGE by the western world as as well. No one was rejecting Western advancements in science in technology.
Of course, you know those happened because the western world became rich by pillaging other places, right? - halo3d, on 10/30/2009, -2/+3thank you come again
- eastbayjz, on 10/30/2009, -2/+3Indians ask for more credits, what's new here?
- cayofuego, on 10/30/2009, -1/+2Doesn't really matter. They'll still pump out ugly kids with gigantic noses and small feet ;). Top priority should be to invent something to help them out with their body odor.
- strongsad, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1There are some pretty horrible rhinoplasties in our time, I'm curious as to how "successful" they could be, back then, in making a nose look proper for the face it's sitting upon.
- PiddlyD, on 10/30/2009, -1/+2"Ethnocentric". Wow, how very pretentious and arrogant of you.
What exactly did the Muslims do with that knowledge over the last 2000 years until they "brought that lost knowledge" back to us?
Mmmm.. Developing dictatorships, immense narrowly distributed oil-wealth amid an sea of poverty and oppression, and one of the most rigid, backwards religions to set back humanity in the 21st century...
But, let me go ahead living in a perfect world where, let me see - The Muslims stole western thought (some of which we presumedly stole from African civilization), transcribed it, and later on, we stole it back.
Nobody "steals" anything. Those who cannot keep it, lose it. It will certainly happen to Western culture at some point in the future, and then later to whoever takes the crown from us. Apologist revisionist history that paints Western Civilization as thieves and thugs is just so much politically correct *****.
I'll tell you what, get hit by a car, and as you lay there bleeding, reject the stolen knowledge of Western Society and opt for the simple, true path of the life-way of native American hunter gathers. Tell those western paramedics you're not going to assist in the plundering of the European white man of all the other untold cultures over the century - that you would rather bleed to death.
Hopefully, they'll let you.
- tushyd, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1Wow, what's it like being racist and ignorant?
- MAC2112, on 10/30/2009, -1/+2You're right, I don't know why you're getting dugg down. Truth hurts I guess.

- HotLeper, on 10/30/2009, -2/+2boob jobs are all disgusting, nose jobs are a work of art when done right
- russ3, on 10/30/2009, -4/+3And I would have bet it was a jewish doctor. Boy was I wrong.
- tushyd, on 10/30/2009, -2/+1Wow, how very ethnocentric of you. What about the fact that tons of ancient Roman and Greek knowledge was lost and brought back to the western world through who? That's right, the Muslims. Yup, they translated everything in Arabic, then everything was translated back to the vernacular at the time.
But go ahead, live in your perfect world where the western thinkers didn't steal many ideas from the non-western world. - eastbayjz, on 10/31/2009, -2/+1Another BS from India, what's new? Nobody in my hood knows whatever you are spewing out there. Maybe it's well known in your country.
If your medicine was so good, how comes millions of Indians die from diarrhea? - eastbayjz, on 10/30/2009, -2/+1buried for wiki
- rpatrick819, on 10/30/2009, -2/+1Necessity is the mother of invention.
- inactive, on 10/30/2009, -15/+4Since Indians have big noses, this comes as no surprise.
