the only way i could achieve my lifelong ambition of being a pirate from my desk - hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15they know loads of places where theres a potentially lucrative wreck thats too deep for current technology..
...all they have to do is wait for the technology to improve so they can reach them - GleepGlop2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Too bad that gold is cursed...
- BryceHutch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Their stock jumped quite a bit
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=OMR - 69sofine, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14So THIS is why metal detecting is America's fastest growing hobby. I thought those infomercials were full of *****
- futureisours, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9yeah but how much did they spend on recovery and spending all the time looking... $25 million? ahhh hell they made $500 million.. profit!
- tallymebanana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not ironic at all?
- patkirkrick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I hear that they've uncovered a cache of 16th century punctuation. Maybe they can give you a call?
- primary0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11RIAA/MPAA must claim the pirate property!!
- borninda818, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12only digg would connect this story to pirates.
PIRATES FTW - Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7FTA: But under the terms of a historic agreement Odyssey will have to share any finds with the British government. The company will get 80 percent of the first $45 million and about 50 percent of the proceeds thereafter.
seems a bit high after 45mil, but that should make some people rich. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6No, *this* is some serious booty. Plus it's related to the story...kinda :P

Albaaaaaa! - rasterbator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Maybe they found a few vowels for his username, too.
- iDiigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The truth is that the country who owned the ship should claim it. Spain didn't see a cent from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha recovery. Spain is so stupid to sign a treaty which says that the ship wrecks found in Spanish waters which are proved to belong to a country will be able to be recovered by that country while the U.S. and England aren't part of this treaty. And when they recover the gold from the Sussex in the Strait of Gibraltar Spain won't see a cent again.
- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I also believe this was announced the day before or on the day of their stockholders meeting. Hmm...
- rasterbator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That is some serious booty!
- mattabb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think I saw the ship that made this discovery, it was in falmouth, Cornwall last weekend. If only I knew this then I could have pillaged it! They will kick me out of Pirate club for this one.
- slapded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i got rid of my OMR stock last year. oh well :( could have quadrupled it

- airship, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As technology improves, we'll see even more treasure finds like this. It will still be difficult, but these guys are proving that the combination of historical research, careful legal maneuvers, and high-tech exploration can pay off very well.
There are still dozens of well-documented treasure ships on the bottom of the sea, and hundreds more that are undocumented. - Armitage2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1dangit... someone plundered my stash!! I was saving that for retirement!!
- blindsidedude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@cwo655321
that's if they are able to find the HMS Sussex "...which was leading a British fleet into the Mediterranean Sea for a war against France in 1694 when it sank in a storm off Gibraltar." The Spanish government gave them permission to search for it, but if they find anything those percentages are the actual earnings they'll receive. - matth1jd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1bury

"But under the terms of a historic agreement Odyssey will have to share any finds with the British government. The company will get 80 percent of the first $45 million and about 50 percent of the proceeds thereafter." - eviscero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How ironic would it have been if the ship bringing the gold was attacked & raided by pirates....yarrr!
- corvairkid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I call first dibs on the One Piece!
- darkchineseboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1uhh.. so doesn't announcing and releasing all of this gold at once flood the market and reduce the average price? maybe i'm just crazy for thinking it follows the laws of supply and demand? or maybe there is always a demand for pirate treasures.
- injury0314, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1And earning $500M to boot.
- retral, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Maybe they were just trying to make Guinness (book of world records).
