USA! USA! USA! - novenator, on 07/12/2009, -5/+66I still find it amazing how so many people can blindly ignore real science. I thought this was the 'modern age'.
Some of the figures are represented in a chart at: http://www.reasoncheck.com/2009/07/07/south-africa ...
If you want to participate in the British Council Internet survey asking the same questions, you can find that at: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey.zgi?p=WEB22 ... - Genecalypse, on 07/12/2009, -3/+44Get a brain morans
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/12/2009, -4/+39It is really embarrassing as a scientist to know that the "greatest" country in the world is still one of the most ignorant regarding evolution.
I'll bet the folks who "don't accept it" don't mind getting a different flu shot each year! Try to explain the hypocrisy to them behind that one and it will just fall on deaf (and dumb) ears to them.
I mean come on, we still elect politicians who don't "accept" it! Can you imagine the ridicule a politician would face if he didn't accept the "round-earth" theory? Sadly, that and evolution "theory" (google "not just a theory") should be on the same level of basic scientific understanding. - SQLserver, on 07/12/2009, -0/+33Here's a far better survey:
http://ncseweb.org/news/2009/07/views-evolution-am ...
"Nearly all scientists (97%) say humans and other living things have evolved over time,"
Only 8% of scientists are some variety of intelligent designist.
Only 3% are some variety of creationist.
An estimated less than .15% of life/earth scientists in the US are creationists:

... THAT'S consensus. - jdh24, on 07/12/2009, -2/+30You all must have missed the Great Scientific Documentary called Ice Age 3. It clearly shows all creatures were alive at the SAME TIME!!! Adam was holding the camera!!!!!!
- trolleyfan, on 07/12/2009, -4/+31Nope. The Bible is about as right as a slightly below-average researched historical novel - which the research getting poorer and poorer as you go further back. Toss in some magic and dragons and - Ta-Dah - the Bible!
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -2/+26It's almost astonishing how religiously oriented america is compared to other countries when we're supposed to be the progressive ones with a kick ass democracy.
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/12/2009, -4/+27International consensus, yeah... with the exception of the islamic countries and the USA. There's probably some sort of lesson there.
- bsamuels453, on 07/12/2009, -5/+28We already knew that 47% of America is dumb as *****, this is just proof :(
Also, inb4 'AMERICA: ***** YEAH' - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/12/2009, -0/+22"The results also show that a significant proportion of those people surveyed in the USA, South Africa and India (43%) believe that all life on Earth, including human life, has always existed in its current form."
Son. Of. A. Bitch.
It's no longer surprising to hear about how ignorant America really is, but it never gets any less disappointing and, frankly, upsetting. - sb66, on 07/12/2009, -0/+22Lol America, at least you're ahead of Egypt!
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -4/+24Suck it, ya damned creationist bible-thumpers.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 07/12/2009, -1/+19And don't forget there are many different religions in the world, all with their own views on how "creation" supposedly happened!! People often forget this little fact. Especially those preaching tolerance and open-mindedness in educational systems.
If you want to teach one, then teach them all, but not in science class. Thanks... - earthforce1, on 07/12/2009, -1/+18No, he was married with children and has quite a number of decendents alive today. Some of his children became famous scientists in their own right:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin#Darwin ... - GorfTron, on 07/12/2009, -3/+20I have lived around young earth creationists my entire life. I have debated and explained evolution and other things to them. They just don't get it and refuse to get it. This will take a generation or more for the USA to wise up about truth and science.
- rocknog, on 07/12/2009, -0/+16Evolution isn't a matter of opinion. If someone doesn't like chocolate ice cream, that's an opinion, and they're free to believe that without being called stupid. If, however, someone calls chocolate ice cream vanilla, despite the fact that they can plainly see it's vanilla, that's stupid.
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/12/2009, -0/+16Rejecting evidence you are aware of for dogma is even worse than simple ignorance.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+16I had a *****' mormon creationist biology teacher once. It sucked.
- Sean42, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15Are you listening, Texas?
- hfactor, on 07/12/2009, -0/+14And by "we're supposed to be" you mean "we believe to be".
- mbelrose, on 07/12/2009, -0/+14In a word, yes. You really don't understand the scientific method if you think there isn't a social component. And you're just biased if you think some other philosophy works better than the scientific method. What, exactly, are you offering as an alternative, useful, practical way to distinguish truth from fiction? You're not a special snowflake, and what you believe doesn't become true just because you feel oppressed.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -1/+15Did you give your kid vaccinations? Thank the study of evolution for it, cause prayer sure as hell didn't kill polio...
Evolution is a real process whether you like it or not. No matter how many lies, mistruths, and non-sequiturs you spout here. Evolution is a real process even if you're offended by it. Evolution is a real process even if you feel it contradicts your religion. The fact of the matter is that evolution is a real process, a proven process - a real part of our objective universe. So, if Truth is something that matters to you, then you cannot 'disbelieve' in evolution or preach against it. Then again, if you don't care about lying, deceiving, and misleading others, then you can obviously do and say whatever you want - regardless of whether it's true or not.
Evolution is biology, the evidence is there for it. The evidence for creation? All you can come up with is 'look around'? Not science, sorry. - Abno, on 07/12/2009, -0/+13There's a lot to worry about when people who believe the dumb things get elected into positions of power, and start to make dumb decisions and policies.
I don't think I need to list any examples for you, take your pick... - iEATcatFOOD, on 07/12/2009, -4/+17The bible is 0% right, sir.
0%.
On the basis of logic. We couldn't have come from 2 people 6000 years ago. There wouldn't be enough genetic difference to make all the races in the world. And because adam and eve couldn't have happened, we wouldn't need a jesus to save us from sin, because eve wouldn't have taken the apple, if she didn't exist. And theres also the god logic there. God would have known about everything yet he let it occur, so basically, free will cannot exist with biblical god. There would have been no way that noah could have gotten 2 animals onto a boat. After he would have gotten them onto a boat, they'd need to be fed through out their inevitable pregnancy. And there wouldn't be any food--- because anything they'd eat-- would become extinct. If noah crashlanded on a mountain, what happened after? Did he just let all the animals go and they just ate nothing and became more? No. A man did not survive in a whale. Burning bushes do not talk, unless cavemen are hallucinating it to. Men can not move oceans with their mind. The earth is spherical, not a flat disk. Moral wise: You shouldn't enslave anyone. You shouldn't kill anyone simply for not believing in what you believe in. You can eat shellfish. You can marry whoever you want as long as they are content with it. You should respect everyone's rights including your own. The earth is spherical, not a flat disk. The earth revolves around the sun. Life began approximately 3.5 billion years ago. The earth is 4.5 billion years old. Not 6000. We can prove this using radiometric dating. Life evolves. We have proven this infinite times in laboratories. There is no denying this. The story of evolution is merely one of many occurrences like the ones we can see in the laboratory. There is a helpful mutation, the creatures survives better--and this happens again, and again, and again. This is undeniable.
...or so I thought
Did I miss anything else? - gdo01, on 07/12/2009, -2/+15Wow, Mexico agrees with evolution more than the United States does. Great job creationists, you've actually made one aspect of the scientific community in Mexico look better than that of the USA.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12abortion. creationism in schools. Gay rights.
Do I need to continue the list of issues that religion makes a problem in our country? - rocknog, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12"They just don't get it and refuse to get it."
Boom, you hit the nail on the head. I have not once met a person who was a Creationist and actually understood the theory of evolution. Not once have I ever discussed evolution with a Creationist who didn't have sweeping misconceptions about it. And not just small details, fundamental principles of the theory. How can you reject a theory you don't even understand? Not that they ever have any desire to. It's wrong, they know it's wrong, so they see no point in studying it, despite the fact that you would have to first study it to make such a claim. Ugh, it hurts my head. - EarlOfLade, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12Completely irrelevant.
Newtonian Mechanics worked wonderfully and the new Special Theory confirmed Newton for all practical purposes.
Creationism does no such thing. Creationism is pure religious *****! - Fogdelune, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12I would simply ask those who doubt evolution whether they get a yearly flu shot, or if they have ever taken different antibiotics to treat an infection.
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/12/2009, -2/+14And it doesn't have to.

Reply if you need any more information. - Yage2006, on 07/12/2009, -0/+11They don't teach science at bible camp give him a break.
- Zarokima, on 07/12/2009, -0/+11That can't happen, though, because, as you said, you can't get something form nothing so it must have a creator, too. Who also must have a creator, and so on.
- jezsik, on 07/12/2009, -2/+13Ignorant people are more easily led than critical thinking people.
- 0260, on 07/12/2009, -0/+10waste of pixels on my screen
- jmac9, on 07/12/2009, -2/+12Religious right wing whackos -- Republicans. Republicans destroyed America.
You've heard it -- those right wing nuts try and say that the earth is only 6,000 years old...ludicrous, boneheads. What's worse is there a group if such nuts who are indoctrinating their children through such religious nut theory to be good little religious intolerant right wing nuts too.
Darwin may not be the last decision on the development of animals and humans, but compared to the absolute whacko religious theory proposed by the Christian nuts... and the use of such theory to support right wing repression of political, scientific, discussion...
But I think the right wing nuts are indeed like the dinosaurs whose time has come and now is gone. They are fading in a last aggressive, desperate effort that is being overwhelmed by fact, science, and the evolutionary intellectual development of humans. - MSP1, on 07/12/2009, -0/+10Fortunately, Science isn't a democracy and doesn't care what the average person in the street does or doesn't believe.
- Zarokima, on 07/12/2009, -0/+10Who created the creator?
- rocknog, on 07/12/2009, -0/+9Case in point, I just called chocolate ice cream vanilla, which was stupid. *facepalm*
- iEATcatFOOD, on 07/12/2009, -2/+11^^
http://www.notjustatheory.com/ - LilJimmyNordin, on 07/12/2009, -0/+9More embarrassment on the world stage for the citizens of America. Pathetic.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 07/12/2009, -2/+11Also I don't like how it doesn't explain gravity.
This "THEORY" doesn't explain everything! HMPH!
Clearly the bible is the correct explanation, morans! - ricorurik, on 07/12/2009, -0/+8Actually the Theory of evolution has been "amended" many times in the last 150 years. I think you're getting confused: Evolution is a fact, it has been observed many times. The theory of evolution describes the mechanisms that control it; that part is constantly changing as new information is received.
- snafflepaffle, on 07/12/2009, -0/+8Evolution has undergone change. For example, Darwin and Wallace couldn't have heard about DNA. It wouldn't be discovered until what was it? 1959? Nor had anyone heard of Gregor Mendel yet, for that matter. Thousands of fossils hadn't been found. Carbon 14 dating hadn't been invented. As the fundamental principal remains sound, and is confirmed by many lines of evidence, there's no reason to alter it. Many of the details, however have undergone lots of change. I find it rather amusing that you are comparing it to theology, which is immune to evidence and never changes one whit. Your ignorance is showing.
- smacksaw, on 07/12/2009, -12/+19Even if evolution is not 100%, the bible isn't 100% right, either. And plenty of people say the bible is perfect. I just don't see how people with a contradictory book that they pick and choose from like a buffet can call out evolution. The numbers in this article are just shockingly disappointing.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7That means northern Africa beat us.
*****. - Dipsomaniac, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7That entire thing pretty much boils down to the Turtle argument.
Which is fallacious. - mickstephenson, on 07/12/2009, -1/+8You refer to evolution as if it's an all encompassing theory, it's not. Evolution is simply Animals evolving from simple lifeforms to more complex lifeforms and is 100% right. Evolution by natural selection is an extension to evolution theory and is again 100% right and provable by fossil evidence. The precise and thorough understanding of how genetics works is not 100% completely understood, but that doesn't negate the previous 2 facts.
The origin of life in the first place is a complete unknown as of yet and while religion believes it can explain this, evolution does not seek to explain this, it is a separate discussion.
Evolution by natural selection is not disputable, and anyone who claims that they know alot about evolution and the scientific evidence supporting it and isn't convinced simply doesn't know as much as they claim, or is deluded and not capable or arriving at a reasoned conclusion. - HEAVYisSPY, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7willful
- Yage2006, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7Wow nice collection of logical fallacy's you have their I can spot at least 20.
