- JoeB4ever, on 02/22/2008, -2/+97Sometimes if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.
- ephemoL, on 02/22/2008, -1/+92I actually know Josh , and told him that people are Digging his story.
- akkibaba, on 02/22/2008, -10/+86I don't mean to brag or anything, but I fixed my own car this morning.
- DanOnTheMoon, on 02/22/2008, -1/+48Seriously, that is hardcore, I hope he succeeds.
- djixl, on 02/22/2008, -2/+33JOSH FTW!
- leftcoastfunk, on 02/22/2008, -25/+50Finally, in the midst of so many lame ass stories (FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: funny!!!!), something worth reading comes along and the comment with the most diggs right now is "Isn't this usually how supervillians are created?" I am ashamed by these fellow diggers. Grow up.
By the time this story hits front page - if it ever does (and it should) - the top comments had better be something worth repeating.
I, for one, am hugely impressed at the work that Josh is doing. He is accomplishing more than probably just about anybody on here could even dream about in their lifetime and he's doing it with a death sentence hanging over his head. People like him amaze me and I really wish I could be more like that even though I know I never will be.
Thanks for reading my $0.02, you may digg me down now. - evo5racer, on 02/22/2008, -5/+28Keep swinging Josh. dont go down without a fight!
- Smills, on 02/22/2008, -2/+24Never!
- blast_flame, on 02/22/2008, -6/+26That's the spirit! Keep on fighting to live forever until you take your last breath.
- orbitalpunk, on 02/22/2008, -12/+29cut the ***** jokes.
- EpicSelekta, on 02/22/2008, -0/+17Dude's got balls
- CatalystGhost, on 02/22/2008, -0/+14I think it's safe to say that all of us are very proud of this and want him to succeed. In fact, it's so safe to say that, that it doesn't even need to be said. I'm betting the guy would be happier to have some jokes about what he does and a good laugh or two instead of an entire digg page filled with the same "yeah, you go! cure that cancer!" posts.
- lamprey187, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16I applaud the courage and determination of Josh. He sets an example of what courage really is.
- SuperVepr308, on 02/22/2008, -0/+12As a cancer survivor myself (got it just about the time I turned 30) I can't say enough about the tenacity of this guy. Dude, you fight that ***** thing with all you got and I know you can make a difference. That disease CAN be beat and you might just be the one to do it. Keep your head up and keep fighting. There are millions of us with you in spirit.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+10I had a chordoma tumor in my clivus right around my pituitary gland. By the time I got an MRI for it I was going blind (the tumor was pressing against my optic nerves). Fortunately, I live in one of the best cities as far as cancer treatment is concerned, Houston. I had a craniotomy in March 2007 and proton therapy treatment afterward (had a seizure after the surgery which sucked). I didn't realize how rare the cancer was until I read this article. I'm rooting for Josh to cure this thing cause the docs are telling me there's still a 50% chance my tumor could return within the next 10 years.
- rastakid, on 02/22/2008, -2/+11... or get Kevin to put up a Donate through Paypal link somehwere.
- likwidfuzion, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9It would be unfortunate, but hopefully the research he conducted could be completed by others to help the rest of the community with the same cancer.
- johnsonjoeb, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Best ***** comment I've read in this thread. Humor adds levity to our lives. No one her is making fun of Josh's situation. It's ***** up. The fact that we have pills that can keep an old man's dick hard indefinitely and no cure for cancer is ***** stupid and shows where our priorities lie. So no, the mention of dying from cancer with a useless hard dick may not be "appropriate" but I hope someone (hopefully with influence) gets the humor in the situation and seeks to reorient their priorities accordingly. Go Josh. These laughs are for you.
- lolinyerface, on 02/22/2008, -2/+9Get off the stage, we're trying to read comedy here.
- PaxImperium, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8Don't be absurd.
The reason we haven't cured cancer because it isn't one disease. It is multiple diseases that react completely differently. You also do not "cure" diseases that come from within unless you perform genetic treatments. Do you think you can "cure" high blood pressure or cholesterol? These diseases are over 80% genetic. Do you think there is some vast conspiracy out there to prevent cancer research from happening? Do you truly believe that all the cancer researchers and oncologists are in on it?
Dichloroacetate is not a wonder drug. It has very significant sideffects and is already being researched by many universities. It is shown to work on several types of cancers but is too toxic to treat many others. This is not news because research is still ongoing. Many many substances that show promise in lab and animal models fail dramatically when used in humans. - dojonz, on 02/22/2008, -4/+11Guys, if we all pitch in..
- RandomGuySteve, on 02/22/2008, -3/+9So a horse walks into a bar..
- grimward, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6leftcoastfunk:
The thing here is to realize that humor is sometimes the only thing that keeps people going in life, who are you to morally judge when or when it's not appropriate? who gave you the executive keys to the world's god office eh? Get off your high horse and realize that not everybody treats tragedy the same way as you do, and that people can admire somebody dying and saving themselves and think they're ***** cool, while at the same time crack a joke about it. The world isn't black and white, only you are. - RoshanK, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Hopefully I may have helped you at some point during your treatment. (I work at M.D. Anderson Cancer center)
- neckfire, on 02/22/2008, -5/+9Lighten up friend :)
- smackhero, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4cancer is a class of diseases. there's no single cure for all cancers. that's why, if you had bothered to RTFA, you'd see that researchers are studying the molecular structures of specific cancers which could make research into rare cancers like chordoma more broadly useful in combating other molecularly similar cancers which might occur in other parts of the body.
- Totz83, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4I thought it was an inspiring story, good luck to him.
- talonstriker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4or he could just pray REALLY hard, as they do in several parts of the world, and god will make the cancer go away.
- Dietrich, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4That joke was awesome. Lighten up.
- metalgel, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4+1
i cant stand when people think ***** cant be funny. the golden rule in life is everything is funny or nothing is funny. people that try to pick and choose are just tight asses that want to be holier than thou. - spancho, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3This kid is extremely hard core. What better motivator that your own impending death?
- AnotherThought, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3sometimes when the unfortunate happens it tends to bring out the best in people, i admire his will to survive and i wish him luck. fight on!
- nbcaffeine, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Maybe you are an retard
- CaptainLando, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Both my roommates know this guy, one went to high school with him and one lost to him in the science competition mentioned in the article (where Josh addressed the mold issue).
I think this is the best kind of science. Where the topic of study is one that has deep personal resonance. - leftcoastfunk, on 02/22/2008, -4/+7Trust me, I'm as light as can be when it comes to other topics but this is ***** cancer. Rare cancer. Cancer that will kill Josh and many others. I'm sorry you feel like making a joke of it is okay. i don't.
- ultrafez, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Congratulations. Want a cookie?
- GoingPostal, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I wish him all the luck in the world. I lost a friend to cancer 2 days ago. It is a horrible disease.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2I had a similar attitude after my father died when I was a kid, after my sister died, after I wound up with a liver problem that had a high chance of taking me out. But, after actually getting through it I figured something out. I'm still dying. You're still dying. Every person I've ever known who died was exactly the same as I am now before whatever killed them occurred. Life is short, even if you wind up living to be 100. And none of us have too much chance of getting past 70 or so
Statistically speaking, I, or someone else reading this, will be dead within the year. Should everyone reading this stop joking because it could be them. Should I stop enjoying life and finding some humor in all of our shared situations as humans because it could be me? ***** that, life is short. Life is to be spent trying to save lives, like Josh there, and also spent savoring and appreciation how awesome it is to be alive. There's never, never, any reason to intentionally squash any enjoyment of it. - solid12345, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2I like how people come up with all these hokey new-age eastern cures for cancer yet if that was the case why is the life expectancy in these parts of the world much lower than the west.
- buddamus, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2And I hope he does, No point moaning when things go wrong, if life gives you lemons sqwert it in life's eyes
- wilkinnh, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Chordoma Foundation web site: http://www.chordomafoundation.org
- solid12345, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2I brush this here plant juice on my arm and it go away?
- RobotBuddha, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2You'd be surprised at how many people with cancer don't go beyond knowing what color their medicines are, and a occasional declaration that watching sitcoms might cure them. I don't know that courage is the right word to use here. But cancer is a draining disease, in a very real way. Most people do find it takes a lot of willpower to keep going while under the double barrage of both disease and treatment.
That said, I don't like the sentiment that nobody in the pharmaceutical industry actually has motivation to find cures for the various cancers. It's not uncommon, at all, for someone to get into research because of family who've died from the very thing they want to cure. - jonnyboy1544, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2That's awesome. Way to take the initiative instead of waiting on others.
- maffiou, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2The guy who invented the wheel probably wanted to fix his personal problem... Nobody calls sellfish for doing that...
- eliasg, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Amazing story, good read.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2How can you look at any medical journal even peripherally associated with topics related to cancer and say that? Pure research on cancer, as opposed to chemotherapy, is huge.
- Pritchard, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2"My word, you stuck it in my hole!"
"Righto, and I also cut the cheese!"'
Better now? - btraxx, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2and says, "ouch."
