- AmnesiacJack, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4I hope the Yellowstone volcano is done aging soon, I can't wait to pop the cork on that one!
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Or you could move away from the plate boundaries. Just saying.
- hnazareth16, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3I feel bad for someone living near a volcano and in a region prone to earthquakes. That's a double-whammy of death.
- wildgilbert, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Aight... let's get drunk.
- mikeophile, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Note to self: move away from Mt. Cristal, immediately.
- Shaggy3, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Thats were the champagne drinking comes in!
Wait.. Maybe I'll go read the article. - ahudson, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I knew carefully studying the effects of champagne would pay off someday!
- cliffzdude, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Beer goggle effect could help to predict how ugly that hottie'll be when you wake up.
- danconia, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I thought this was an Onion article. I thought it was obvious that shifting plate techtonics would have a large effect on volcanoes. Plus scientists can't really predict earthquakes anyway.
Plus the champagne analogy is horrible. - honeybrass, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I just feel its a dumb place to live, sure its a tragedy to see a city wiped out by a volcano, but hey, what do you expect?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Plate tectonics is also a theory, it has not been definitively proven as correct though it is the "accepted" view. When it comes to Earth Quakes and Volcanoes, Chicken and egg factors abound.
Volcanoes can occur spontaniously, The Volcanics of America's West Coast might occur because of compression pressures rather than slipping alone. Papua New Guinea is the same. The Pacific might be pushing down from the north in as much as Australia is pushing up from the south compressing the rocks rather than riding over them. though a rather deep trench south of East Timor would suggest the prior rather than the latter. There are 12 or more Spontaneous volcanoes in the massive pacific basin. For no reason they simply exist and Hawaii is just one of them..
Just a theory/ - rsHoratio, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1For some reason, when I read the title, I pictured scientists in lab coats drinking bottles of champagne and going "OH ***** there is a volcano happening somewhere!"....but what do I know, I am drunk.
- gcnaddict, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1The champagne analogy is perfect. Gases in the molten rock are released through turbulence (just as they are from champagne) which then leads to the volcano no longer being able to withstand the pressure.
- slapthemonkey, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1An interesting comparison
- ajkrik, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1. . . or build houses and buildings that withstand earthquakes.
- ajkrik, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1In the US very very very few people die from earthquakes. But the less people on the west coast the better :)
- RCTucker, on 12/15/2008, -0/+0I found an interesting website about earthquake prediction by monitoring electromagnetic signals. You can learn all about their plans and current research at www.quakefinder.com
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+0It's like a champagne supernova in the sky...
- compwiz45, on 02/09/2009, -0/+0This is pretty interesting stuff. IF they could predict volcanos quicker a lot more lives could be saved.
http://www.squidoo.com/speedupacomputer - jdpugsle, on 12/13/2008, -4/+1Great article! Vocanoes often cause earthquakes. There are over 5,000 of them happening worldwide.
