- Pinkertinkle, on 09/24/2009, -0/+7Elephants can also cause earthquakes.
- Haoie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+7Supposedly many animals can sense seismic activity well ahead of humans.
- mattmacneil, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3No, but they certainly never forget 'em!
http://instantrimshot.com/ - warbird, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3Humans use intelligence and innovation to compensate for crappy senses. If you take our equipment into account, we're probably one of the most sensitive species on the planet.
- captininsanity, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2So if we get a bunch of elephants in the city and they stampede we'll know to start running!
- LongShlong, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1... Let me guess, it's the big pink one in the corner of the room?
- nox, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Who uses an ipod to communicate?
- MuffinPatrol, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Flap ears twice to signal earthquake in the next 48-72 hours.
- RockyCosmos, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2No
- iPerphekt, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Yes, because they know when they're about to take a step.
- cassferatu, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2"you could communicate with your friends without a cell phone or iPod or any other fancy electronic gadget."
Wow, I can communicate with friends via my ipod? Thats a new feature. I guess I wont be needing an iphone afterall.
But yes, animals always seem to know. My dogs were acting strange for about 10 minutes before an earthquake earlier this year, and that was a pretty mild one. - MelvinSchlubman, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1FTA: "After the 2004 tsunami disaster struck Southeast Asia there were reports that elephants in Thailand had become agitated and raced to higher ground even before the wave struck the beaches."
That's impressive if elephants can make the connection between earthquake and resulting flood. Not so if it's merely the awareness that higher ground is preferable in general when faced with danger. - Rapax, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately, that's one of those myths that refuse to die. It would be great if it were true, and that has led to quite a few studies into this over the last few decades, and they all come up negative. Animals are just as clueless as we are when it comes to earthquakes.
- stutimandal, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Even (primordial) humans can. Hours before the Asian Tsunami in 2004, some tribes of Andaman and Nicobar islands (India) went up the tall trees to save themselves. The whole island was washed by waves of water.
- Rapax, on 09/24/2009, -1/+1Sorry,but that's an urban myth. Animals don't notice earthquakes ahead of time, and thousands of them were killed by the 2004 tsunami.
- dalooo, on 09/24/2009, -1/+1Hey Guys,
Here's a similar story I posted on Digg not too long ago. In fact a day ago... lol... it talks about how animals predict natural disasters.
http://digg.com/pets_animals/Anyone_wondered_why_p ...
Please digg, I would love to gain some notoriety for at least one of my submissions after the hundreds of stories I submitted... LOL - wondertwins, on 09/24/2009, -1/+1no comment.....
- spookyttws, on 09/24/2009, -2/+1My elephant can, yours can't.
- WhoBob, on 09/24/2009, -1/+0It's well known that not only elephants can detect seismec events.
This was proven back in 2004 before the Tsunami hit Thailand. Not only did the elephants head for the hills 30 mins or so before the waves struck ,birds and animals fled as well.
No animal was killed in the destruction - bambichen, on 09/24/2009, -2/+0Heya , Yes, elephants and almost all other animals can predict earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and most of mother natures unpredictable weather changes. It would be wise to watch the actions of wild animals, horses or even your dog or cat for clues to an on-coming earthquake. Even beetles will show signs of mother nature starting her changes on planet earth.
I came across a similar example while browsing through the site called www.examville.com, which says there was a scenario when Thailand was struck by the Tsunami. The elephants were trying to get to higher ground, but their owners didn't pay attention and tried to restrain them, but some elephants managed to cut loose and headed for higher ground with people following them. It was those people who survived thanks to the elephants. The owners said that from now on they are going to listen to their elephants.
