- electro_mike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you know you are Canadian when you see "Blue Light" and you automatically assume it is talking about beer.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always thought it was the "red light"
;-) - grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok , i ve been working in biopsych labs for four years now , so alittle FYI if you will allow,
Exposure to bright light releases adrenaline, darkness releases melatonin... it makes sense... when its bright i.e sun the body releases wake up chemicals, when it gets dark the body starts putting you to sleep...
blue light is the most effective part spectrum as it is the closest to UV light...( ROYGBIV ..duh ), but this doesnt really mean that you should be using blue LEDs to try to stay awake..
If you really want this to work, get a seasonal affective disorder light,, just google SAD light... these are specially made bright lights to keep people awake in the winter by tricking their bodies into thinking that the sun is out for longer..... unfortunately they are made without UV rays to avoid skin cancer concerns ( somewhat ridiculous )
if you really want to get all jacked up on light i highly suggest getting a "grow light" they are much brighter and will have your poor little brain thinking its the middle of the summer.... if you dont want to the neighbors to suspect that you are growing pot, you can just go to the tanning bed as late as possible for alittle perk up.
Unfortunately this really isnt much better for you than coffee - just different. It really screws up your circadian rthyms and may leave you an insomniac after a couple of nights not too mention it could seriously burn out the color receptors in yours eyes....
finally if you are really really in need of more awake hours get a prescription for provigil.... - netmancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Google-Fu may be weak today (thus no ref to back this up), but I was under the impression that airplane cockpits used blue light for nighttime flying for exactly this purpose; to make it easy on the pilot's eyes and to help them stay more alert. I've also noticed personally that any time I leave my old ipod on at night (with the backlight on) I've noticed a more alert and seemingly well-rested awakening in the morning. I may have to test this blue light theory more intensely...
- h0dge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that would explain the line from the misfits song "tv casualty"
My eyeballs absorb only blue filtered light - mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1funny how their webpage background is FREAKIN BLUE!!!
- manuerwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for the tip..............just got to go buy some blue tinted bulbs now :)
- thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1front page with 25 diggs? nice. sweet article.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Is that why I perk up like a ***** when I see a blue light in my rear view mirror? - VeteranRanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If short-wavelength light helps you stay awake, then purple light would do it better.
And this makes sense to me when I think of the story not long ago about daylight keeping you awake.. there's UV in daylight, which is the shortest wavelength visible light.
I wouldn't vouch for that stuff when it comes to eye damage though.
At least my 12 hours per week in high school physics are good for something. - andoru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a craze with using blue glass in greenhouses for growing plants in the 1800's. Some guy made claims that if you replaced 1/3 of the glass panels with blue glass, you could raise an entire crop of vegetables in just a week or two, and they would have more nutrients. People jumped on the bandwagon and began promoting blue glass (or, sunlight "energised" by it) as a cure for all sorts of medical ills. Of course, they thought that cells loved soaking up nuclear radiation too.
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my keyboard(lights under keys), room walls, computer case+5 fans and covers, are all blue.
- CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hahahaha, the fan in my room only has one light on it; a bright neon blue one. No wonder eh?
Anyone else have the hampton bay retro fan w/chrome and the blue neon? lol - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay. I knew my choice for blue LED case/keyboard was a better choice than red.
- ttfadia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"you know you are Canadian when you see "Blue Light" and you automatically assume it is talking about beer."
I thought the same thing :D - MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wake me up when the sun turns blue
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol i saw this thing on the abc and it said that blue light make u get cancer
- smartguy2045, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So that blue screen of doom we all love so much is actually a good thing?
- Eyegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to be a sonarman on submarines "back in the day" and we used blue lights in the sonar shack of my last boat. They had used red lights on an earlier boat and I found that I preferred the blue lights to the red.
Our eyes bothered us less and it was easier to concentrate. At the time we thought that it was because the red lights were clashing with the green screens of the sonar system, but graybots post sounds a lot more probable. - LordOfTheSponge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who knew drinking beer can keep you awake. I prefer Labats Blue over their Blue Light though.
- jonnyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's almost creepy how quickly that works.

I own a computer that has 14 Blue LEDs and Freegin' Lights up like a Christmas Tree!! - skytimelapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article ends with saying blue in the wrong doses can harm the eye and then ends without anything about what these doses are. Um, thanks.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That explains why I can never leave my computer at night even when I know better.

Major double take. [non-drinker] - daveybullseye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is true, why do I always get tired at Kmart?
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"perk up like a *****" ...
/me attempts in vain to purge that mental image from my head. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah ha! I knew my stupid blue LED alarm clock was keeping me up (It's one of those Emerson Research ones). That clock is goin' down...
- xjems, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no wonder i cant sleep with my binary clock facing towards me (it has blue led's)

- timko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now the night mode colors (shades of blue) on TomTom Navigator software make sense now :)
- applebyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_vision
"In biological night vision, rhodopsin in the rods of the eye breaks as light hits it. The peak rhodopsin build-up time for optimal night vision in humans is 30 minutes. Rhodopsin in the human rods is insensitive to the longer red wavelengths of light, so many people use red light to preserve night vision as it will not deplete the eye's rhodopsin stores in the rods and instead is viewed by the cones."
It's interesting to note that many Japanese cars use blue lights in their instruments dash while German cars tend to go with Red/Amber. Different schools of thought or just styling differences? - Minishark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should put a couple blue lights on the dashboards of cars so nobody will fall asleep at the wheel.
- matid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, I have to buy some blue LEDs. BTW, the article on Wikipedia about Night vision is interesting too.
- antigravit42, on 06/14/2009, -0/+0*changes desktop wallpaper to blue*

I like sleeping with the lights in my room on and now i know y .
