- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56I was going to comment on the story but I forgot what I was going to say.
- PhonicUK, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Sorry, what site are we talking about again?
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15excellent site, good layout, well written, very usefull and free. I love it. Super dugg.
- DigitalDud, on 10/18/2007, -0/+10This is what schools should teach, mental talents. As opposed to little bits of knowledge too general to be useful.
- Neticule, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Awful thing is, im going to forget I even bookmarked it!
- voodoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mnemonics is extreemly good for memorization and testing, but in actually learning or use of a language fluently I'm skeptical of its practicality
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5***** dude. If I translated every word in the spanish language into stuff like "cab-bee-za" or whatever I never would have had time to learn the whole thing.
That works if you want to learn a couple phrases for travelling but not a whole language. Picture a few thousand irrelevant words floating around in your head that you need to remember how to string together. You can't do it. And if you can then you would have no problem learning the language the old fashioned way in the first place. - bytesmythe, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4A better way for learning languages that have a close relation to English (such as Germanic and Romance languages) is to simply learn the connections between cognates.
"Cabeza" derives from the Latin "caput", from which we also derive the English word "Capital". "Capital" refers to heads, thus "capital punishment" (in which you can lose your head), or "capitalism" (related to the ownership of property, in this case heads of cattle). The words cattle and chattel also derive from "caput".
Knowing that connection not only allows you to make a mnemonic device, it gives you a little insight into the history of the languages. By comparison, picturing a bale of hay on a taxicab is hardly worth the effort it took to think of a silly image you'd remember.
By the way, you don't have to stick to English cognates. Maybe you know a bit of another language that has cognates in common with the language you're trying to learn. For instance, the English word "same" is "meme" in French. Knowing that gives me a cognate to the Spanish version, "misma". Once you learn one language, it gives you a bigger base from which to learn others. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's very practical for some people. Not everyone learns the same way.
- izzybomb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought it was talking about RAM :(
- leodavinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ha, I'll definitely use this for my exams this week : ).
dugg - xtracto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha for those of you trying to learn spanish:

See? Spanish is very easy lol - Pookatooka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I disagree. I tried it out and it was amazing. I think that technique is actually aimed more towards lists of words that need to be memorized rather than numbers. Personally, I tried it and I was able to remember all 20 words on the list in one try after creating those mental images. Plus, it was kind of funny when I imagined Jay Leno (who was on a swing) about to be attacked by a Tiger, that had just had tea, with a bear, at a table.
- iHeartLiberty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think his technique for learning languages will not work well. I've learned a few, and constantly linking back to your "native" language is a prescription for frustration and failure.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, this site is written by somebody who doesn't have a clear perspective. He seems so entangled in his theories as to how memory works that all discrepancies can be explained away be redefining them. One may have amassed a lot of data that bears some semblance to the language in question using his method, but that doesn't mean that there's any degree of expertise in the desired language.
- azenone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow! What a great site, I really like the layout and the.....omg, look a butterfly..yay!
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How to master a foreign language? arabic?
- stoavio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome site. I did a couple of the tests with the itemized lists and saw a serious improvement in my ability to recall items and in the correct order as well! I tested it out on my family (we made kind of a game out of it) and it was quite obvious that by using the association techniques ones ability to remember things long term will improve noticably. Thanks. DIGG.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for the example drawings of what you should visualise.
Did you know that the Spanish word for house is "casa"?
http://www.buildyourmemory.com/images/case.gif
Now you do. - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, this site rocks. I'm going to read the whole thing asap.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just get anyone of Harry Lorayne's books. He has been around and republishing/reformatting/repackaging the same excellent memory techniques for decades. One of his books is probably in your library or available for a buck from your favorite used book venue.
- utdiscant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, i study spanish to, and he might just want you to remember the word. Visualising "be" or "a" is not easy is it ;)
- Brightstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya, that's the one thing it doesn't have. instructions on how to build your own memory so you don't have to pay those hiked prices (me especially since I'm still on an RDRam board)
- FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"...this section of the site promises to outline a system that with a little practice (and I do mean a little), will enable you to master the basics of any given language that you choose, in as short a period of time as 10 days. Yes thatβs what I said β just 10 days.
Before outlining the details of this system, I would just like to mention that if you were to use conventional techniques in order to master a new language, then you would probably be expected to spend between 1-3 years before you would be considered to be truly proficient in that language...."
Wow... I'm going to try this out... - form51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't tell her! You won't have an excuse next time you "forget" her birthday.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.buildyourmemory.com/linking2.php
List number two I got 1-13, forgot 14 probably because it's a verb, and recalled 15-20 in reverse order. Interesting how that works when you break the train of thought. - jedimasta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have a small issue. I was only really interested in the foreign language section. I live in LA and my spanish is meanial at best, but even I know that cabeza is not pronouned with a long 'Eee' sound and a long 'A' (like hay) as he describes: cab-beez-a. Maybe his techniques work, but he obviously know zero spanish. Muerto means "die or dead"...not murder.
- saudama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg, bookmarked and printed! Very useful website. I just hope I remember to check it again sometime.
- sxreader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uhmmm it is a cute site but it is nothing more than a set of trivial memorization rules. I think that every person with a minimal brain activity should have developed their own until the age of 15. I think the most important point of the article is observation. Focus on something and your brain will construct the appropriate rules internally.
- offsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you like this stuff, you may also like http://www.mentalrobics.com/ which talks about the same thing with the addition of ways to improve your creativity and stress management.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also the corner is esquina (key)
- czack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yay, now i can smoke pot and still remember stuff!
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know that the suggested memorization method even works for Japanese.
The Japanese word for semiconductor is εε°δ½ "handohtai" and I always picture a scientist giving away free semiconductors - a handout.
Sometimes they're not very politically correct - the word for a curfew (at a dormitory) is ιι "mongen" and the mnemonic is that you feel monged if you don't get to bed early.
To be honest, I've never actually vocalized the associations though - they are formed and recalled automatically, almost like a suggestion of a picture rather than the picture being there at all. Everyone who can speak a foreign language uses this technique to some extent but they might not be using it consciously. - bonyicecream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first I read the title and was like: I wanna learn how to build my own RAM!
- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas' Memory Book quite some time ago (lots of the same techniques in it), and it helped me a lot. Good site. Dugg.
- caboosemoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Further, the example words he gives seem to betray either an ignorance of, or at least willingness to ignore, correct pronunciation. That's a recipe for disaster.
Also, how is this technique supposed to furnish one with grammatical and syntactical understanding? - 1337guy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know Pi to 110 decimal places.. looks like the numbers section is where I need to go to learn more places.
And yea.. when I saw this on the digg homepage, I thought it was RAM. But I read the description - iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thank goodness for TiVo.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know about all that, but I can tell you that I know lots of people who quit smoking pot and their memory got a lot better since.
- vspazv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used this site a while ago but forgot the URL.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+117 = dugg
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I though double spaced paragrahps were for ***** term papers. Now that I know, I am going to use it on every one of my sites.
- punx45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the quality of writing was actually quite bad. Definately highschool level.
- matyre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While the quality of the writing wasn't that great, the content within was what was great, I think this could really be of practical use to most people.
- maxsax123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This site is great for someone like me who doesn't have the best memory. The techniques seem to be pretty easy to learn and so far are working. I do like the section on the Roman room. Great way for rememberring shopping lists ;-)
Definately dig this site! - fatbeaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dont do drugs ... it WILL slow your ability to observe, hence it will make you easier to forget something!
- Ecin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0β I find it highly improbable that this knowledge will in any way improve your ability to recall information. Which is after all the purpose of this site.
just a quote from that site. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could have done with these a couple of months ago. Last exam is tomorrow. Software Engineering: diagrams and *****.
- jcjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently it didn't work too well on you...
- bjohnson58, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The calendar diary is way to complicated for me!
