Breakthrough in cancer surgery - 5 organs removed & replaced
reuters.com — Surgeons in Florida had to remove 5 major organs from a woman, her stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver and small and large intestines, in order to remove a cancerous tumor. The organs were kept outside of her body for 90 minutes during the surgery before being replaced. Some blood vessels were also replaced with Gore-Tex during the surgery.

- IphtashuFitz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Well until now no surgeons had attempted removing 5 major organs while keeping a person alive without those organs. The doctors that this woman originally went to claimed her tumor was inoperable because they couldn't reach it due to its location and all the surrounding organs. This is a major breakthrough in being able to keep a person alive in this state long enough to remove a tumor and then put them back together again.
