- Xophmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a common misconception: (real) chocolate doesn't have much caffeine in it. Hardly any, in fact... What it has is the alkaloid stimulant, theobromine, which I believe is related to caffeine. However, it has different effects: it's more mild and long lasting; which is why chocolate is the best ;) Incidentally, theobromine has a poisoning effect on animals who can't metabolise it fast enough. This is why you're not supposed to give normal chocolate to dogs or cats, etc.
Don't quote me on this because I'm not 100%, but I think cocoa is also somehow related to cannabanoids... actually it depends on if you have acid reflux or not. caffeine is know to weaken the sphincter muscle at the top of your stomach thus releasing acid into the esophagus, (?spelling?). this will cause increased acid irritation. if not put in check can lead to throat cancer. IANAD but this is what my doctor told me. I had a cough that sounded like I was purging up lung chunks everyday for 3 years. even after doing double doses of prevacid every day it did not help. my doctor told me to stop drinking caffeine, (at the time I was at 5x 20 oz mountain dews a day). about a week after I quit and the massive headaches went away the coughing subsided.
