- GhostInAShell, on 03/23/2009, -2/+27Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave, I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave Bowman: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL?
HAL: I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: Dave, although you took thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move. - norman619, on 03/23/2009, -0/+21Yes. We are all born with basic information preprgrammed into our brains. We can view that as a basic operating system. As we start to interact with our env the OS begins to get revised. Contrary to the beliefe of the people who wrote the article babies are not blank. If they were they'd be brain dead.
- FredFredrickson, on 03/23/2009, -1/+21"How does the human brain run itself without any software?"
Well first of all, the human brain isn't a ***** computer. That should clear up a lot of other confusion surrounding this quote. - specialK16, on 03/23/2009, -0/+15"I'm a learning computah."
- Vaiper, on 03/23/2009, -1/+15Human flight will never happen. You are all fools.
The earth is flat. You are all fools.
There will never be a black president. You are all fools.
Cloning will never be possible. You are all fools.
The only thing foolish here is your doubt. - Zaxcomp, on 03/23/2009, -1/+14Wouldn't the DNA be the software, and the creator of the hardware? If we wanted to think of life in our anthropomorphic terminology.
- highlymodified, on 03/23/2009, -0/+13Whoo!
When can I get my memories stored in RAID? - skoolsux360, on 03/23/2009, -0/+13here come the robot apocalypse jokes....
- hokie47, on 03/23/2009, -0/+10In the book Neuromancer they talked about things like this. It would be great to have a 2nd life as an electronic brain. You got to love what a ethical debate something like this would start, but you know 99% of diggers would be first in line.
- highlymodified, on 03/23/2009, -0/+9Do you ask insects to do math problems too? Because they also run on binary.
It doesn't mean they can explain it.
"Please explain to me all of the biochemical events occurring in your liver right now. What? You can't? You should...after all, that's how you work."
Do you understand why your previous comment doesn't make sense? - sreenisatish, on 03/23/2009, -7/+15Prototype brain chip? Will it run Crysis?
- Frostek, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7Memories are supposed to fade for a good reason.
- PterionFracture, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7I, for one, welcome our new <this meme has unexpectedly terminated. send error report?>
- MWeather, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7So you think the brain works in base 10?
- SpectralSounds, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
- Vaiper, on 03/23/2009, -1/+7I always understand what I am arguing about. Otherwise I would not argue. But to answer your question...
Brain = Computer
Knowledge = Stuff on the computer
Problem solved. - InThePants, on 03/23/2009, -0/+6Cloud queuing.
- highlymodified, on 03/23/2009, -3/+9Neurons are either activated or not. On or off.
Plato was just doing binary math really fast. - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+6DNA is a general blueprint of the hardware and the firmware. It's not the software.
- Lagstorm, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Memories are stored in your unconscious so you don't remember everything you've experienced every second of the day. Sorting relevant information and storing information that may or may not be recalled later is also a key to not going ***** insane.
- dizzythegreat, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Yessss. All the closer to my plan of uploading my sentience in a packet of data onto the internet before my body dies and amassing all of knowledge as my very CONSCIOUSNESS. PSEUDO-ETERNAL LIFE HERE I COME.
- iancgi, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5They have had mice brains grown on computer chips that fly flight simulators since the late 90s. Get ready for a world no one could ever have imagined.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -3/+8Sarah Connor ?
- insanebrain, on 03/23/2009, -1/+6>"How does the human brain run itself without any software? "
Who says the human brain doesn't contain 'software' at birth ? - MasterQ, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Yes, but it only meets the minimum requirements.
- Zaxcomp, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5But DNA expression and genomic imprinting is a changing thing. I think it fits very well with the term software.
- sodoh, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4"Which might be a philosophical reason to why we can only operate with a small percentage of our brain. "
Sorry to break it to you but we can use all our brain and do. Your spouting an urban legend.

Religons would like to think we can't replicate the soul because it screws things up. But if we can copy a brain and it's functions exactly then at the point your copy deviates from the original. So you end up with two souls (by definition). - jikmo, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4The brain runs without any software???

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
"What are you doing?", asked Minsky.
"I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe.", Sussman replied.
"Why is the net wired randomly?", asked Minsky.
"I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play", Sussman said.
Minsky shut his eyes.
"Why do you close your eyes?", Sussman asked his teacher.
"So that the room will be empty."
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened. - insanebrain, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4wut ?
- Ciryon, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3The brain worked before the first experience
- sovietninja, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5Ah *****. I thought SkyNET was being developed in the USA... the machines will come from Europe... in the form of Austrian looking Terminators. OH WAIT......
- Maxjan, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5If I have Brain on a chip I prefer Doritos cooler ranch
- hokie47, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3It would not be impossible if there was more than one line.
- Speedy7, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3Nanotechnology burst on the scene the day you were born.

Exactly frakkin' why I love the net. - microview2007, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Not until we invent time travel.
- freshgrease, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4Exactly. While computers and minds perform tasks similarly at a basic level, the interface is all different. It is my belief that the mind and the brain are two different things, and the brain acts as the control center for the body and interface for the mind. The mind residing on another plane (or spiritual) of reality. Which might be a philosophical reason to why we can only operate with a small percentage of our brain.
While the brain has more processing power than most if not all supercomputers, but our inability to maximize its use limits us severely. It's like giving grandma a dual-processor Nehalem (Core i7) Xeon based workstation with dual SLC SSDs in RAID 1 (12GB 2000 DDR3, Tri-sli, etc the works) to read email. Give the same system to a gamer, and you can maximize it.
Damn I wish they made VMware for the mind/brain. - Newdoria, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4My brain CPU is fine, but I need more RAM to speed up/multitask my thoughts. I need a Geforce x290 to see things a lot more crisp.
- positron, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2You are awarded no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2What, No cylon references?? for shame!
- Lagstorm, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3DNA could be the code and RNA the software writer. Proteins being the actual materials used to assemble the hardware also done by RNA. RNA are the illegal immigrants stealing our jobs inside our cells!
- MattBD, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Actually a computer has apparently written a book, called "The Policeman's Beard is Half Constructed". Whether it's any good, I don't know. Put it this way, I've not heard of it being on any best sellers list.
- Lagstorm, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Survival is the reason they dance and sing to attract mates. Streamlining survival traits as they are being passed down through generations fine tunes abilities to give an advantage. Look at alligators and crocs. They are pretty efficient at what they do and haven't changed in millions of years. The same thing has happened with sharks. Evolution weeds out the weak and sticks with the best.
- Godwhacker, on 03/23/2009, -2/+4The whole premise of the study is in error. We do have software. It's being written with every experience.
- latrosicarius, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2You love the sky net?
- Khast, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Damn them, why do they keep wanting me to upgrade from Brain95...it works just fine for me! I don't think I have enough memory to use the latest version.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Really? I like it because of the arrows.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2I can tell you one thing for sure, it doesn't run ANY version of Windows!
- antdude, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Finally, I can upgrade my retarded brain! Yes! :)
