- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19in related news, thousands of teenagers succomb to brain death due to extensive video game playing
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16In related news, Jack Thompson has been pronounced brain dead. That is all.
- kamicane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12this is impressive, but your title suggests he recovered from brain death tanks to videogames. He wasnt brain dead, he awoke from coma, as the article says.
- acariquara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Brain dead patients *are* dead. They do not wake up. The article should note he was brain DAMAGED, it's a whole other different thing. And I am pretty sure of what I am talking (being an ICU M.D. helps too)
- Marlon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Getting tired of misleading titles on digg.com just to get more diggs!
- marttimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great - the kid is put into a coma by a car crash, then spends the next few months playing 'car racing games'. Cruelly ironic really.
- alphageek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Being pronounced "braindead" involves the following (at least in Canada): 1. cannot be from a fixable problem (i.e. hypothermia, drug related, etc.), 2. absent brainstem reflexes (i.e. they test every cranial nerve and nothing happens), 3. patient is evaluated twice by different doctors at different times, and 4. confirmatory testing (no perfusion of blood in the brain, flatlined EEG). This is obviously not what he recovered from...
- cheesechick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6From the article:
"After he miraculously awoke from a nearly month-long coma, doctors declared he would never again eat on his own, walk or talk."
He didn't wake from a coma because of video game therapy, he awoke beforehand and they proclaimed him brain dead, THEN he had the therapy and recovered. - Danathar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's been known for some time that the earlier (age wise) you have brain damage/trauma the more likely you are able to recover. There have been circumstances where infants have had more than 3/4's of their brain damaged or missing and ended up having completely normal or close to normal lives. At early ages the brain is wiring itself for a lifetime and can use just about any part of the cerebral cortex to map functions.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dead braincells, and lung pumps, and brain blockage.... Oh MY!!!
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For a minute there I thought I was reading something from National Enquirer!!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol, i thought he played GTA or something and got OK, now educating games
- the1casey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the test is very efficient at determining the viability of a patients status, but as with every test, humans are involved. And we all know that humans make mistakes. I'm sure there was a mistake made here.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting story, but it's the submitter who is "braindead" (figuratively) for not knowing what "braindead" means.
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, soon afterwards the boy became violent and evil because videogames are the tool of satan.
- oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jack thompson announces boy recovers from being brain dead and is now a real life terminator/robocop!
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, pretty amazing. Great find there.
- jafojsharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And playing WOW for 80 hrs. a week diesn;t cause any Dain Bramage at all. Un fakt, it provedes a helty plathira of edumacgationel velius.
- Ummagumma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You won't see Jack Thompson touting this story. Mainly because he earns his living terrorizing parents about video games.
- palmdoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I thought you became brain dead from playing too many video games, not the other way round :P
- 1337geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1video games which increase brain activity, reminds me of a movie, anyone know which im talking about? ITS THE LAWN MOWER MAN ALL OVER AGAIN.
- smartpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm curious whether this type of therapy would have any benefit for someone with a normal, healthy brain.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was a VirtualBoy joke ... ..
- aguita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG! learn2Type U n00b!
- NomenNescio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh... What would Jack Thompson think? xD
Maybe he will say that the kid has been possesed by the devil! *yarr* lol. - the1casey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good story, but the patient was obviously mis-diagnosed. If he was really braindead, there would be no coming back. Patients are braindead when they have absolutely zero brainwave activity. This happens because of anoxia, or complete lack of oxygen to the brain. The human brain matter can only sustain for a matter of five minutes without oxygen, therefore the patient becomes "braindead". In the hospital, we use a test called Apnea test for brain death.
- imhigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*****, once your braindead there is no coming back
- tidokoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In contrast to the thousands who ended up brain dead thanks to video game therapy.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TFA says this software will work with my Xbox. Where can I get it? If it helped this kid regain brain functions, imagine what it will do for a normal person. I'll become a Super Genius and take over the world!!! Waa ha ha!
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Video games, like the Xbox360, do help coordination but they can't wake the dead. And I am pretty sure of what I am talking (being Bill Gates. helps too)
- blueangel5383, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0another interesting part of the article...
"West Virginia's public schools are battling obesity by making "Dance Dance Revolution" part of their curriculum"
...ddr at school.... that'll make me wanna go to school!
I wonder if there's a minimal weight limit to take that class..
=) - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We had a discussion on that topic quite a while ago, we decided that it was a system put in place by the american government to get gamers fit, so that they could have a whole super army of people who can get running headshots and take out an entire squad with a deagle :)
anyways, im not to surprised that this could happen, its defiently a good thing but video games have been found to work wonders for both learning and modifying the brain/thought patterns - Djanvk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I should let my wife read this and maybe she will have a different outlook on gaming now!!!
- Lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This seems counter-intuitive to me..
- Cloud890, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Slightly misleading title. I would have like it more if an actual title was used for the therapy. Still can't be bad for video games as a whole.
- Fujiwara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wicked. I's agreets wit joos comments' mang. yeadood fer realz
- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep, DDR and then America's Army. Although until guns have a mouse targeting system, I think they're a little off. (Though perhaps they can drive combat robots. Will we add jumping to those?)
- Zjm7891, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe you need to get your eyes/monitor/cables checked... I don't see anything green. The only thing green I see is the little digg button!
- wookiekiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is amazing.
Now we can show this to the dicks who hate video games. - DtectiveGFriday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Eat that Jack Tompson.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No digg for inaccurate title. Although, in the poster's defense, TFA's title is just as misleading.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats what ill tell people when i play video games.... yess yess im getting smarter.....
- Hawk4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you bothered to read the description, which is also on the front page, it says "thanks in part to video game therapy." Maybe actually read everything before bashing the title.
Titles that are unclear or don't portray the whole truth are nothing new. That's why there's an article that follows. - mikey601587, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Take that Hilary Clinton!!!
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hah, I knew playing the virtual boy for days at a time was good; this just proves it.
P.S. Why is the background on here green? - metalica77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that's sick. Wat more reasons do u have to tell ur parents t play video games.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2He wasn't brain dead... he had some kind of trauma... if you're brain dead it means your brain is DEAD as in all braincells are dead, that's the medical condition that warrants calling someone dead here in sweden, yes you can keep the heart beating and lungs pumping using machines, but if he's brain is dead it doesn't really matter since the person will never open his/her eyes again, and if you remove the machines he/she doesn't keep going on his/her own...
Yes cool that they could stimulate his brain enough to remove some of that blockage caused by the coma, but the title is very odd indeed. - acevoncash, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3no.. he was brain dead after he woke from his coma.
