- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -88/+635I think this counts as evolution via mutation. A new form of radiation eating extremophile. Enjoy creationists.
- gh0st3000, on 03/02/2008, -9/+461Headline: Black Fungus Found in Chernobyl ***Eats*** Harmful Radiation
"The researchers stressed ***these findings do not mean fungi can eat radioactive matter*** and somehow cleanse it. Rather, the fungi can simply harness the energy that radioactive materials give off."
Umm... - kenvsryu, on 03/02/2008, -23/+334Noah had a male and a female nuclear fungus eater in his ark.
- nicksauce, on 03/02/2008, -26/+298LALALALALA I CANT HEAR YOU
- badjoke, on 03/02/2008, -153/+358Evolution - 1
Jesus - 0 - HenvY, on 03/02/2008, -24/+229Awesome, now all we need to do is shroud nuclear dictatorships in black fungus!
I, for one, welcome our new fungi overlords. - DBradbury, on 03/02/2008, -16/+194http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/20070422222547dat ...
for the original, NON-FOX link! - inactive, on 03/02/2008, -32/+176This stuff obviously did not exist 24 years ago.
- ryancxx, on 03/02/2008, -9/+134I can't believe a digger was browsing Fox News.
- jsg7, on 03/02/2008, -4/+112It DOES "eat" the radiation! What it isn't eating is the *radioactive material*.
It's like saying plants "eat" sunlight. They aren't eating the Sun. - rebotfc, on 03/02/2008, -0/+98To be fair this might not be a recent evolutionary response, the article states scientists could boost growth is several pre-existing fungal types by exposing them to radiation.
- Trixrox, on 03/02/2008, -32/+120How the hell is this an evolution vs creation battle. Digg is getting more and more annoying, yet the news articles can be interesting. The comments are becoming flooded with anti god, anti republican, anti fox news, anti microsoft, pro ron paul, pro obama, pro apple, pro linux...not that all of that is bad it is just annoying. Jesus doesn't need to be in the comments of a radiation eating fungus article...
- norman619, on 03/02/2008, -2/+80Read the article again. It's not claiming these are newly evolved fungi.
FTA:"The scientists experimented on three species of fungi. They consistently found that ionizing radiation significantly boosted the growth of fungi that contained melanin."
This is what they are talking about NOT about evolution. In other words they are finding that fungi which contain the pigment thrive when exposed to ionizing radiation. They have learned something new in general about this type of fungi. Reading comprehension is great. You really should learn it. - ElbowGeek, on 03/02/2008, -7/+72There's a fungus amumgus!
Sorry, someone hat to say it... - djdole, on 03/02/2008, -3/+63Yes, that's pretty much what the article says if you'd RTFA.
Actually,...that's EXACTLY what it says, even though it's not the focus of the article.
It states that ALL fungus have menalin, which is what they're finding is used to convert the radiation into energy. They even state that they exposed ANOTHER type of fungus (one which they induced to have more menalin) to radiation 500 times greater than norm, and it vastly increased it's growth rate.
The black fungus is merely a common existing fungus that is/was best suited to making use of an abundant energy source in that region, it hasn't mutated or adapted and isn't new as catalysis points out (but as many Diggers still assume).
Now why Diggers won't take the time to read a short article, but WILL read hundreds of comments ABOUT said article and speak out their ass about the content of which they never read is BEYOND me. - jamessavik, on 03/02/2008, -9/+66Nature always finds a way.
- tkltangent, on 03/02/2008, -8/+63I noticed the same thing. Quality reporting over at foxnews...
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -12/+66I enjoy how you just stated that God and Logic are mutually exclusive. Nothing like owning yourself :)
- LeeSoong, on 03/02/2008, -6/+56Nuclear Black Fungus To Do list:
1. Eat all the radioactive waste
2. Sprout tentacles and eye stalks
3. Hunt down humans - need Brains, MORE BRAINS!
http://www.bogleech.com/viento/migo.jpg - lex0nyc, on 03/02/2008, -1/+456) Stop letting the white fungus keep us down.
- catalysis, on 03/02/2008, -10/+54It should be noted that this is NOT a new species of fungus. This is actually a common mold that you can probably find growing in your basement. It is not an extremophile.
- ethanpack, on 03/02/2008, -47/+86ElWizardo, my small-minded friend, not all Christians believe in creation-sans-evolution. Creation and evolution are *not* mutually exclusive in my opinion. I think there have already been enough examples of evolutionary behavior in the world for people to realize that natural-selection and adaptation are reality - even if they choose to believe that God (through either or both divine and spontaneous and/or evolutionary methods) created us.
- roflbrothel, on 03/02/2008, -1/+38HEY EVERYBODY! PLANTS ARE EATING THE SUN!
WE HAVE TO STOP THEM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! - linuxrocks2007, on 03/02/2008, -4/+40NOM NOM NOM
- MacEnvy, on 03/02/2008, -5/+41Most of us don't make fun of religion because we hate it. It's just really, really easy to make fun of.
- inferno10, on 03/02/2008, -0/+35So that's why Super Mario grows when he eats those mushrooms!
- nixfu, on 03/02/2008, -2/+36
THE FUNGUS DOES NOT CLEAN THE RADIATION...it just uses the energy(released particles) coming from it.
This is not some super nuclear waste eating fungus...its just a fungus that uses energy. - Syphon0928, on 03/02/2008, -3/+35If it did, we would have seen it in every Super Mario game...
- Chordinator, on 03/02/2008, -2/+34Someone's still drunk from last night.
- jamessavik, on 03/02/2008, -3/+34>>I, for one, welcome our new fungi overlords.
I wonder if they are good sauteed in butter with garlic. - inactive, on 03/02/2008, -12/+43Exactly. If God is all-powerful and all-knowing, he's certainly got the brains to make a system as complicated as Evolution.
- Pake, on 03/02/2008, -1/+30They're probably asking the same thing about us.
- weister42, on 03/02/2008, -0/+28Fungus, given time, will basically consume anything...such as my dad's toenail
- brstilson, on 03/02/2008, -0/+27That's why I use the term "creationist" instead of Christian. Even the pope believes in evolution. Creationists don't have to be Christians, they can also be Jewish or Muslim, since all three religions share the same creation myth.
- Diancechet, on 03/02/2008, -9/+36Where the hell did he mention all X-tians being Creationists?
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -1/+28Dude, it said fungus "eats" radiation.
- bluesdealer, on 03/02/2008, -3/+30"I think this counts as evolution via mutation."
As cool as that would be, you're wrong and obviously didn't RTFA. - EarlOfLade, on 03/02/2008, -5/+31Why should religion get special treatment?
- SSUK, on 03/02/2008, -8/+34Why didn't he just make us perfect in the first place then? To tease us?
- KingGorilla, on 03/02/2008, -2/+27A little known fact, Noah's ark was nuclear powered
- ICSU, on 03/02/2008, -13/+38Hate? Just ridicule, something irrational beliefs ask for.
- smacksaw, on 03/02/2008, -1/+24That title is a tad misleading in that it implies some sort of elimination.
One of the HD channels was showing a programme about animals living in Chernobyl and it postulated that the reason the animals had adapted without ill-effects is that their lifespan was shortened by predators, not side-effects of contamination. Perhaps these animals are resistant. If the food chain, starting with fungus is starting to adapt, maybe the outlook isn't so bleak. - norman619, on 03/02/2008, -0/+22Great someone who actually read the article w/o some agenda in mind. I salute you sir! Dugg
- norman619, on 03/02/2008, -5/+26All biological evolution is mutation.
- h4mx0r, on 03/02/2008, -1/+22Mutant shrooms?
I say we nuke the site from orbit, it's the...
Radiation? Oh wait.... - MetalLizard, on 03/02/2008, -0/+20Yea because Shigeru Miyamoto is fond of all things fungus, and radioactive.
- GliTCH82, on 03/02/2008, -0/+20In Soviet Russia, a meme beats you dead.
- macaddct1984, on 03/02/2008, -5/+25I dug you up capi, because I'm pretty sure that was sarcastic. (At least I hope it was)
- toppgun, on 03/02/2008, -0/+20but it is probably +300 health
- arizonagroove, on 03/02/2008, -0/+20"Black Fungus Found in Chernobyl Eats Harmful Radiation, Strange fungus found crawling up walls of Chernobyl nuclear reactor absolutely loves"
You know what I love? When people both to exert the tiny amount of effort required to make sure that the summary is coherent and doesn't just stop part -
