Behind the Niagara Falls, there is this tunnel....[PICS]
28dayslater.co.uk — "Behind the raging horseshoe falls of Niagara there lurks a dormant monster, a century old tunnel painstakingly laid brick by brick." Some brave people from UK Urban Exploration website 28 Days Later went to visit the tunnel behind Niagara Falls. Stunning pics - it isn't every day you see the back of the Niagara Falls!

- ad551, on 10/12/2007, -39/+17I think the first comment in the linked thread is prophetic "I'm sure some of yall will dig this..." :)
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -85/+17The first thought i had when i read the title was the noise you hear when you discover a secret in the legend of zelda games, you know that little 8 note scale.
- Rhelim, on 10/12/2007, -14/+39@marix?
What does that have to do with the comment you are replying to? Please just make a new thread instead of trying to steal the top spot. kthxbai. - marix, on 10/12/2007, -41/+10all the cool kids are doing it?

- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3That power station looks very phallic.
- Blazer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Isn't anything made out of brick, "laid brick by brick"? :P
- whoreman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I have been in a tunnel behind the falls a few years ago but it was not these tunnels.
You go down in a lift and come out to the side of the falls but you can walk along the tunnel and see behind them but watch out because you get totally soaked if you are not careful by the spray - TekeeTakShak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmm...the second picture looks distinctly familiar...
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Isn't anything made out of brick, "laid brick by brick"?"
Maybe they were going two a a time :P
- smt65, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8That must have been a LOT of fun to explore!
- vbr2, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24How BadAss would it be if you lived there?! Granted of course that you fix the place up...add a couple of ginourmous plasmas, replace the rusty rails etc. I would love to give someone directions to my home: "drive past the shed and make a right, go down and make the second left. There should be this really huge waterfall, maybe you've heard of it, I live underneath that. Clean your shoes before entering my living complex please!"
Perfect place to run my 'operations' ;D- Rhelim, on 10/12/2007, -62/+5Sorry bro, only one problem with living there- it's in Canada. I would have to reject.

- nyyg, on 10/12/2007, -42/+3I still don't understand why people comment "www.duggmirror.com." I mean it isn't that hard to type in duggmirror, the annoying part is finding the mirror to the story on the site. Why can't you people just provide the duggmirror link to the article instead of being lazy?
Anyway, that complex is awesome, and I can't begin to imagine how much work went into that. I can't wait to go check it out.- VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Correct me if I'm wrong, but commenting "duggmirror.com" automatically refers you to the proper story rather than you having to search. That's why.
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9actually peopel just type duggmirror.com because duggmiror reconizes what digg submission you came from and automaticly redirects
http://www.duggmirror.com
see for yourself - nyyg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Ah, well for me when I click the duggmirror links it just brings me to the main page.
- lmushl, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12That's coz your browser's awesome!
oh wait, sorry
That's coz your browser's not awesome! - GTanaka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5it doesn't work in Opera Mini though. Just redirects me to diggmirror's main page.
- Submerge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Using FF 2.0 and the dugg mirror link doesn't bring me to the article either. Just front page of dugg mirror.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Damn another lame Safari user!
- jstem1994, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Using FF 2.0 and the dugg mirror link doesn't bring me to the article either. Just front page of dugg mirror."
Using the same & it did work for me..... - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just link using the full duggmirror url. It takes about the same time as typing the bare url and it works for everyone.

- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The short link requires your browser to report referrers. Some people are just plain too paranoid and have them off. Others are because their browser has them off by default (which I think is completely stupid, as it messes up some website statistics), or their network/company or school proxy/firewall has them removed.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Always left out of these stories is the process of getting permits.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Apparently in this case permits weren't gotten nor permission sought. Not sure what to make of that.
- lmushl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Aside from good clean illegality? ahhI mean fun?
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4In terms of morality there's the line of thought that you should always ask permission. However there's another moral line of thought that says that when you are in a situation where permission will be denied summarily to proceed anyways without even asking in a way that best leads to not getting into trouble... and several other variants including ones that involve surrendering oneself after committing the deed.
- Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I've been there a couple times. The boat ride is pretty cool -- a view like you've never seen.
The "Journey Under the Falls" isn't THAT exciting in my opinion. Loud... wet... Much like the rest of the trip. Ho-hum.
(Well, it was better than the gift shop.)
However, both make for exceptional photo opportunities (not the gift shop).
I'd recommend checking it out sometime. - frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I read the title I thought of the small tunnel they let you pay to go in. I just remember when I went there with my parents when I was a kid and it sounded like you got to go behind the falls or something cool, but all you really got to do was wait in a long line that wraps through several rooms, and then finally get to walk not very close at all to the edge of a tunnel that comes out under the falls , but you don't really know it is the falls cause all you can see is that there is an opening and a bunch of water falling in front of it.

- Mengoxon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0And behind some interesting photos, there is this terribly written article...

- zcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm.. it's a hydro station?
Although I have to admit, without DHMO most cancer cells would die fairly quickly so perhaps you have a point.
- zcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm.. it's a hydro station?
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Thousands of years ago, when humans were but mere slaves to a race (aka. Predators), we helped them build these giant holes all over the earth which were then given names such as 'tunnels'. Those Predators used these holes to defecate inside while using invisibility screens and ruled over our species for millions of years.
Now I will tell you how they defecated and why they defecated (big question, obviously)...
Thousands of years ago, after an epic war between Predators and Klingon's, those who survived choose th earth to defecate at random spots until.. there were no more spots..- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Man, don't start spouting that Scientology *****...
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nah, more like "Cybernetic ghost of Christmas past" from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Nevermind.. - Mike.ohara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL nice reference..to the Predator movies, but Klingons?
Really though who'd win in a fight the Predators or the Klingons?
oh and shadus.. I LOL at your sucktitude. - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past is great.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fantastic read. I've been to the Canadian falls but never even knew that was their. what a beautiful underground tunnel. Breathtaking really. I love this land.
- my10cent, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0I have been in that tunnel 3 times, and it is really nothing special, the pictures might look like it but it is boring to visit.
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you're boring to visit.
- dsankt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Disclaimer: author and photographer of dugg story.
There is a major error in that report as linked. The end of the tunnel was constructed with soft concrete to crumble and erode naturally with the rest of the falls. The rubble at the tunnel mouth is simply the eroded material and was *not* created when the tunnel was decommissioned. The updated and correct version of the report is at http://www.sleepycity.net/viewpost.php?b=67- mightytribble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sir, you and your crazy tea-drinking friends are my new Gods.
That is some serious ninja ***** you pulled. Awesome.

- slug0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought the post was nothing short of incredible.
The story is very well written and descriptive.
Had I had the time(and balls) to go through all the trouble I'd probably take tons more pictures though.. and with a high resolution camera.
It does look like they lugged some pretty nice photography equipment down there with them though (judging from the equipment picture).
.. any one know where those pictures are?- dsankt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The tunnel is not a friendly environment in which to take pictures. The bricks are slippery and the air is humid. You have no light except for the light you bring yourself. Would you take tons of pictures at the expense of quality? Each photo takes about 5 minutes to setup, then about 3 minutes to lightpaint. If the results aren't satisfying then you might paint it all again. Repeat, bracket. Lugging an slr down there is effort enough, a medium or large format camera would be crazy talk. That said a 40in print of that junction does excite me.
You cannot easily come and go as you please to shoot photos, you have a limited amount of time in which to get your shots and vanish. The original 11mp raw files are safe and sound *not* on the internets, as expected.

- JimmyDushku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LMAO it's Sealand. Seaworld is the where Shamoo lives
- srosebush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to live in St.Catharines Ontario, very close to Niagara Falls, and I often would go to Niagara Falls but I never knew all this was there, totally awesome!
- thedak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whoo St. Catharines! I live in Thorold, so this article is rather interesting, can't say I expected such large unused tunnels hanging around. Quite a huge step up from the tunnels for 'journey behind the falls'
- PNFNP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i live in niagara falls, canada....i can definitely agree with its 'ho-hum-ness'.
however...as a tourist...i can imagine that there is a lot of wonderful things to see and do....just dont get sucked into the ridiculous amount of traps involved in the 'strip'
but i guess, like any city, your best bet is to just hook up with locals and let them help you find the good times.
i like journey behind the falls and all the old hydro tunnels because there is a lot of history there...and as a child i was always obsessed with the 'daredevils' going over in barrels and risking their lives for no good reason...and the fact that victoria park (big and nice well kept area that runs along the river/near the falls/bottom of the strip) has not been sold off or bought and hotels havent, and never will be developed. the niagara parks has some morality and decency, and really...there is a lot of nice things to see....
but on the other hand...there is a constant slew of americans getting rude and angry over canadian money...and a gigantic amount of fresh 19 year olds coming over and posturing tough, drinking two beers, and throwing up.
just hook with the locals and you will find a good time. - badapplestudio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Definitely needs a Horror film made there. I can picture zombies going all through those tunnels.
- boxc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1had me until they dissed Madonna.. she'd kick their asses.
- Coronagold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Weird. I never read an historical article penned by someone who has the mouth of a Teamster before.
- JoeBob5606, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I thought this article was a joke when I saw the diagram of the tunnels..... looks like a big tallywacker.
Great article! - WontonNoodle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just gotta say I was RIVETED. This is an AWSOME adventure. I love the writing. My heart was racing, this guy had me man. I was with them every step. I'm sitting here drinking my morning coffee all warm and dry and im actually scarred for these guys as there repelling LOL. I want more now im gonna have to check out where this came from and if theres gonna be more adventures. This may sound cheeze but I think these guys could do a TV show doing this kinda stuff and make BUCKS. Hmmmm.......Discovery channel have they got and idea for you.
- floorman56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the power house? can we google earth it?
- unpoetical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would guess the entrance is the building centered in this map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=niagara+falls&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=43.07189,-79.073356&spn=0.005353,0.011694&t=h&om=1
It appears they are exploring the tunnels in the "Toronto Power Company" plant which was decommissioned in 1973. See images and info on

- phenom2k7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I don't get what all the fuss is about. OMFG WOWZERS THIS IS LIKE THE BEST THING EVER, AMAZING WOWO WEEE WAAAH !
It's like you found the holy grail and you went on an Indiana jones style adventure or some *****. And on your way you had to defeat the nazi's, hitch a ride with a whale and wrestle the worlds biggest anaconda, answer trivial questions and solve mysterious puzzles !
A few nice pictures and an extremely long winded story to go along with it.
Congratulations
/Rant over - haveacigar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else think the sceond picture looks like a penis?
- MikieEars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Living 10 min away, I defiantly don't take advantage of seeing the falls anymore. We used to hang out there a lot. Then again I don't know anyone personally who has been on the Maid of the mist. Yet everyone goes to devils hole, mostly to do drugs. http://www.wnyhikes.com/niagaragorge/niaggorg.php
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1resident evil....
- computergod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always planned on going to the generating station, but I never knew that you could get into the tunnels that the water for the generators went through. I assumed tat they were filled up with water/concrete and would not be that interesting to see. I was in the crappy (compared to this) "behind the falls" tunnels and the sound from that was amazing, but very intimating. Those tunnels have to be a few orders of magnitude higher. I would not like to be the guy who's job it was to inspect those tunnels while it was in use.
Urban exploration is a supremely awesome hobby, I really need to get back into it. - empyreal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live 10 minutes away from NF. Its lost its appeal when i was 10. Been in those tunnels twice. Its a very moist experience, like that last stripper i took home (j/k).
- empyreal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess i should have looked at the pictures (shame). To be fair, those pictures are of the hydro canals and tunnels to the (I think) Sir Adam Beck power generation station a couple miles down the river. There are a number of them, tunnels that is, and an additional large one being built currently (2000+ jobs or something). Those are not from behind the falls, they are from a mile or two down the river.
The Journey Behind the Falls (the tourist attraction), has smaller tunnels than the pictures in that post.
AHEM, or its from the abandoned power plant upstream of the falls. My bad.

if only he could get paid for doing this - Thor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I lived near a power station in Northern Ontario back in the 60's (Cameron Falls). I worked in the power house in Kemano, BC in 73 during a maintenance process on the generator (they had it out of the hole. IT WAS HUGE).
Everything associated with a power station is humungous. Just like this one. - 01vanillabean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dsankt has to be the last of the most amazing self contained dudes around. Forget the pseudo post-cyber pop speak and google him. From early days in Brisbane austalia, then splitting round the world. Then seeing him high above NY (one of the best B&W photos you'll see) to his own webby - sleepycity - hes a legend. And he does it because he does his own thing. there are lessons from that lad.....
