- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11how come the NYC subway seems so flimsy then? its full of bacteria and pee
- theupquarks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This is fascinating. Speaking of bacteria - Dannon yogurt has a new yogurt with "organic bacteria" (yeah, I know) that is supposed to keep make you "regular" after 2 weeks of eating consistently.
First of all: let's hear it for the bacteria,
Second of all: wouldn't eating the same thing for 2 weeks make anybody "regular" - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sorry pal, flash mobs started in Manhattan. Apparently you were still a drunken undergrad at the time, and missed this bit o' news.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4{sarcasm}
Because it's really easy to build a structure on top of a bamboo patch....
And I'm sure that bamboo would make an exceptional building material for skyscrapers....
{/sarcasm} - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4urban permaculture

- SwissCamel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I knew my Syphilis must be good for something.
- MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eat sand and ***** a brick? Hell... I can do that, and trust me, I got time.
- groditi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@uberchaoslord
lies lies lies. i probably eat 7 steak and cheese sandwiches a week, so I know. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As bamboo is a grass, its roots don't travel too deeply. Therefore, you'd hold the ground around the building in place while the building itself falls down.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well how could microbes figuratively convert it?
- machinegunopera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3These have to be the NICEST, FRIENDLIEST, comments I have EVER seen on digg.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1However, I was quite correct in my assertions....
Next time I will endeavor to be less caustic... but at least my points are valid. - PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good and not surprised to hear this - it's about time the lowly bacterium got its due! http://www.paullevinson.net/archives/hail_the_mighty_lowly_bacteriu.phtml
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seems like this could be a bad thing if it slips into the ground wells.
- Hidama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We finally figured out know how the aliens made the pyramids.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** am i slow
- scrimaxinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've said it before, and I'll say it again.........
........silly hippy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"except for the {sarcasm} guy."
STFU moron! - brenbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be interesting to see if there was a way to use this or some similar method to make a more durable stone than sandstone. Then you might be able to replace a traditional concrete foundation for a building such as a residential home without any excavation. Simply pound some pipes down into the ground where you would put footings and inject the bacteria and nutrients into the soil.
Another thought would be to use this method to add a protective layer around the foundation/basement of an existing home. It'd be a bitch if you ever needed to excavate though! - payndz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Huh, maybe Masamune Shirow's Dominion - where the city's buildings were grown as a form of giant genetically-engineered fungus, explaining their rounded appearance - isn't too far-fatched after all...
- Disclaimer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Regular? Why would I wanna lose my super powers?
- rshu4you, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Having been in the '94 Northridge earthquake and seeing what the liquidification did to the buildings, anything that can help is worth looking into.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i meant plant after youve built (assuming the root system wouldnt make it fall down - i do admit this is an unresearched theory)
skyscrapers.....pics - it happens
http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_MY_P_F/0_my_photographs_hong_kong_photo_10.htm - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2you could plant bamboo
i hear the root system is so entangled itll stay together even in an earthquake
or even use it as a building material - its strong and flexible
http://kauai.net/bambooweb/bamboo.html - mrfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1except for the {sarcasm} tag guy.
- uberchaoslord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Eating steak and cheese for a week would stop you up faster than a cork and crazy glue. Eating lots of fibre will make you regular, so this just seems gimmicky to me.
- mrfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Can somebody send these guys to Venice already. Venice is sinking!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice - allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sounds like liquid corn starch.
- Vurk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Thats nifty
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1yeah i dont believe it its not even for sale
