- df12, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10The videos are just examples of what could be. And I think more to the point, what is possible with portable/mobile hardware currently available. All that's needed is the display tech to catch up: http://www.microvision.com/wearable_displays/mobil ...
- Culyt, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8Anyone looking for a good scifi book featuring Augmented Reality, I recomend Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge, (theres also a short story by him Fast Times at Fairmont High in the same universe).

I guess also the anime DennÅ Coil.

These phone hacks are far from being real Augmented Reality.
I think the OpenSource community could try getting a jump on AR by starting to design some protocols and such. Taking SecondLife/OpenSim and removing the sky/ground, and setting up a system retriving a list of near by servers over wifi, or from GPS coordinates would be a quick hack.
Real AR systems will need something better than GPS (atomic inferomitry looks like a good candidate supporting milimeter percision, need height too though). A tempory alternative would be some kind of glyph tracking system (you could also get websites of AR server from glyphs with QR codes) Small embbedded computer displays would be the other one. Also a way to get the depth of the stuff in reality inorder to ensure the AR stuff doesn't overlay things that are close in real life. - Joe_rigby, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8The question is not "Will it?" the question is "When will it?"
- Astark, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7Scientists hope in the future this will free up both hands for masturbating.
- NikoKun, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6I've been fascinated by AR for a few months now... Ever since the big tech demos that Total Immersion put out.
I downloaded ARToolKit and other variations on that, which was nifty. Also tried out all those in-website flash demos where you print out those annoying little black and white markers, to see a little 3D model on them. Which is a nice demo, but markerless AR is more impressive. Markerless demos are few and far between, but it's getting better, and THAT is the future. lol
I've seen quite a few AR advertisements for movies lately, the 2 impressive ones being for Transformers, and Star Trek.

And I've recently started reading "Rainbows End" which takes place in a future where such technology is everyday common place.
(Also, If you're into Anime, check out Dennou Coil, which is also set in a future where AR is built into everyone's glasses.)
Personally I think AR is the big future of computers/internet... But we need more markerless AR applications... And we need to break free from the tiny cell phone screen. Hopefully AR supporting HMDs/Glasses will become better/cheaper/popular, as maybe an accessory to smart phones. The phones would be the processing power, while the glasses would be the main form of interaction.
I just can't wait for this stuff! *So hyped!* - krakelohm, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8ryanhayn = name of the douche
- DarkCloud515, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6The uses for Augmented Reality are truly only limited by one's imagination. A great use would be for medical training.
- zephc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5What's great is that Rainbow's End doesn't just used AR as fancy technology just to have (e.g. flying cars in much scifi), but as an integral part of the plot.
- deanc, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4If you dont think AR is useful yet - check out this video of an early attempt at AR for a business card.

Now that is crazy cool. - JoeCool51, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4With how small electronics have been getting, I wouldn't be surprised to see a contact lens based screen take advantage of this.
http://www.gizmag.com/electronic-contact-lens-prom ...
For anyone who already wears contacts, this wouldn't be too far fetched of an idea to adapt to. - FredFredrickson, on 07/15/2009, -4/+8If it means constantly having a phone or computer in front of my face, you can count me out. Having more information at your fingertips is great, but I just don't see myself getting any increased enjoyment out of, say, a vacation, if I have to constantly look at my phone.
I love computers and electronics as much as the next guy, but "computer-enhanced living" is not living. It's being unnecessarily tied down by electronics. - NikoKun, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Here's another link for Rainbows End, as a mirror:

Another awesome book is Chalres Strosses Accelerando (Even under Creative Commons)
Its not go much to do with AR, instead more futuristic stuff such as mind uploading. It basicially follows the events of a technologically singularity most of the way through.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerando_(novel)
http://www.antipope.org/charlie/accelerando/ (the book itself) - Hetman, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3I want machines that augment my reality. That is what humans should be thriving for.
- NikoKun, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Oh, also, this part is just odd "You'd be stuck with "reality" or "augmented reality", not both." That doesn't make any sense.
Augmented Reality means you CAN see the real world around you. It wont get in the way, when you don't want it too. It's not like virtual reality, which puts you entirely into a Fake world, blocking out everything else...
Think of a good video game HUD, gives you great information that you need, without covering your view of the game. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9KPJlA5yds
Yes. - 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2It's already here in driving navigation. The next big step will be heads up displays like in military aircraft that give you an overlay of what you're seeing outside your car.
- ShaneMcDeath, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1woah .... this guys like.. totally.... wrong...
and stuff....
yeah - LokitheComplex, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Yeah all that fangled fuss about interwebs and wireless phones. As if.
I'd like to see the computer that can beat me at chess. - Gumphlumph, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2This blogger is obviously clueless as to the history and other current uses of AR. Check out Metaio and ARToolKit to see what's really going down in this space.
- df12, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2+digg for "Rainbows End"
I'd also recommend "Accelerando" by Charles Stross. It's been released under Creative Commons License and available free in a bunch of formats here: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/accelerando/ - LokitheComplex, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2It would appear glasses will become the devices. Scanning, translating, updating. Though its kind of sinister too.
- exmo, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Another good one by Charles Stross, that is fairly feasible (technology wise), is Halting State. It uses a lot of concepts from Accelerando but slightly tweaks and expands on them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_State - ShaneMcDeath, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Don't forget, this stuff is going to branch off in directions that we can't even imagine yet; that's one of the most interesting parts for me. In 2 years time, people's entire lives might revolve around something that might just be an offshoot of this technology.
I genuinely think this could be somewhere near the level of mobile phones in terms of impact. It's very easy to underestimate this kind of thing and very easy to forget how that same thing happened initially with the internet. I'm sure plenty of people thought the internet was going to be very useful for a certain range of things but at the same time, they just couldn't foresee all the different ways it would branch outwards and evolve, drawing in more and more people. - LokitheComplex, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Plus everyone will look like film stars augmented reality.
- LokitheComplex, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Though glasses can have cameras, mics, processors and speakers easier than contacts.
- NikoKun, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I've heard that some people have had such problems... But not all... And a friend of mine reassures me that it just takes time to get used too, like how when you get vision correcting glasses for the first time, or a new prescription, and it gives you have a headache for a few days, but you get used to it. I'd wager that's how it is. (At least I hope anyway, any experts out there too correct me?)
HMDs that have 2 separate display screens should be able to offset the overlay images slightly, to make them appear as if they are farther away from your face... And this should allow your eyes to focus as if it truly was farther away. Again, just a guess... but I sure hope this is the case. - NikoKun, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Here's a link for Rainbows End, if anyone wants it:
http://rb.68frogs.com/#_home - TrnsltLife, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Proxnet, Allnet, here I come!
- NikoKun, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1The point of Augmented Reality is that its not tied down, it's the digital world put into the real world.
It will start out using cell phones as simple browsers of AR, then move to glasses displays. - NegativeDigg, on 07/15/2009, -2/+1You guys are just not getting the picture of the hilarity of this technology. Imagine you walk around and all of the sudden you see someone virtually exposing themselves with a giant penis. Talk about augmented reality...
- lyonsban, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0I seem to remember something like this was being used in Toyko for singles on the trains there to "hook up" using blue tooth signals. You could get information on each other by being with-in a few feet and automatically exchanging information. The technology would appear to be a logical extension of that.
The display technology, and apps, have to come a very long way before it's useful for much more than hooking up. Those VR glasses are horrible. - Xzelick, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0Why would we want to eliminate social interaction by broadcasting ourselves instead of talking and discussing it together?
- professorfurley, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1people are gonna get hit by cars.
- lyonsban, on 07/16/2009, -1/+0You knew what I meant Nikokun.
Without a decent display I'm not interested in augmented reality. I play call of duty like everyone else. If it existed and worked I would own it already.
The cool factor is somehow lost when you're walking through a city waving a open laptop around in front of you. - Atario, on 07/15/2009, -3/+1"Sissy"? Really?
- lyonsban, on 07/15/2009, -2/+0The glasses make you nauseous because you're focusing on a screen just in front of you, which appears to show a screen far ahead of you. Eventually you feel like barfing and your eyes burn. Otherwise I'd already own a pair. I would have had a pair 15 years ago when the first monitor replacement glasses came along. 3D technology may partially fix the problem, but as an overlay it would probably cause the same problem the glasses do. You'd be stuck with "reality" or "augmented reality", not both.
I can't wait either, but it's not just the Apps that need to come a long way, it's the hardware too.
Like FredFredrickson said above... "If it means constantly having a phone or computer in front of my face, you can count me out." Ditto. - ryanhayn, on 07/15/2009, -5/+1krakelohm = product of poor parenting
