- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Well, we've never successfully rebooted a human brain. It's a lot like Windows ME.
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Here's the actual journal paper:
http://biology.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document&doi=10.1371/journal.pbio.0040100#s2 - Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I'm glad our brain is flash memory rather than just DRAM, because if it lost its data on power loss, we'd be pretty screwed.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14And screwing a dead person would be terribly wrong anyway.
- mwong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I can attest to it being true, I am a psych senior. Infants sleep so much to help process all they have learned.
- tucker8235, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It does lose its data on a power loss but we aren't screwed by it because we are already dead :)
- FishOnAH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I like to think of this as the brain defrags itself every night...if we do not get sleep/enough sleep the defrag fails to finish and we do not function as well.
- KenG6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The article summary is misleading. The point appears to be, not just that the brain reworks memories during sleep, but that it does it while awake as well.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No kidding. If I ever had to cram for an upcoming test I'd wake up early, study for a few hours, take a nap, study for a few hours, take another nap, etc. I think it was a really helpful strategy.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So that's why when I'm playing Oblivion they tell me to rest when Ive learned something.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is pretty weird. I just woke up earlier and strangely my dream consisted of me 'dreaming' about a new propulsion system. After mulling over it on the way to the bathroom to take a leak, i conceded that the system would not work...because there is no such mathematical law in the first place. =/
Maybe its a manifestation of some subconcious desire. - daigakuinsei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This explains why after studying late into the night for a test the next day, I've had vivid dreams in which I was setting up and solving complex problems. Upon waking, I was not only rested, but completely ready for the test.
- warfang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lmao... it all makes sense now.
- mistershawn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Alas, necrophilia is indeed a dying art.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That explains all of the "Dancing Broken iPod Theater" dreams i've been having lately.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So that's why I had a dream about cosecant last night. =P
- SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm with you warfang. Coding before sleep kills me most of all - I dream of coding and wake up thoroughly unrested (and not necessarily smarter!)
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sleep is more like defrag'ng your hard drive, boring.
- pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no probably just because you get a lot of practice...
- pcdave79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The brain never ceases to amaze me . . . its so interesting how technology can help us to understand how
the brain is constantly oraganizing new information that it acquires . . . - anonym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally, I can justify sleeping in lectures!
- techbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree. I've had many lucid dreams - some provide great creativity and help me come up with new ideas, sometimes I get one of those 'lightbulb' moments about some problem I've been working on.
To boost lucid dreaming I take this: http://www.brilliantdreams.com - Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree - really old news.
I remember a few years back (sometime soon after N64 cam out), I was watching some science show (likely @discovery.com - now Daily Planet). They had a story about a test for memory and skill improvement during sleep.
The study involved two control groups playing tetris (spacial skills). Both played for the same length of time, except that one group slept in the middle. The improvements were greater in the group that got sleep. None of the people in the study had played tetris before.
I remember this, because after seeing the story I thought, "So that's why I was dreaming so much about Super Mario 64". People in the study found that they dreamed about tetris.
Note: It may be possible that the no-sleep group played longer, and still performed worse. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know people, I am tired of hearing you people calling stories dupes, if its a dupe just report it and shut up, please....
- wingerspoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its obviously not common sense. Take for example the statistic that over half of all Americans are sleep deprived. If it was common sense more people would know it's importance.
Sleep is an awesome phenomenon. I used to think it was worthless, and was fed up because I wanted to find a way to sleep less and still feel good everyday. I found a book, "Power Sleep." It's all about the sleep process, blah blah blah, and has some short questions to see if you are sleep deprived. Pretty interesting. I've sleep well ever since.
Here's the book:

I would have a really complex problem and my mind would work it out while I was sleeping. At times I would wake up in the middle of the night with the answer to my problem.
Now we have a reason to sleep at work :0) - natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How is this news?
- swytz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amen brother. Some people have absolutely nothing relevant or worthy of talking about in relation to a topic other than "OMG LAME DUPE SPAM OMG." If only trolls realized that their comments are far worse than dupe articles.
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4this must be the reason I'm an expert at masturbation.
- SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Gives all new meaning to that meatloaf song
- speel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Oh how nice...
- maxhrk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1porn are easily to be retained in memory than it is to education. *duck*
- JayA, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Old news.
- kcghost, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3No digg. Didnt we already know this? Actually ... isnt this common sense? This isnt a huge scientific breakthrough, lol.
- cerventus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0This is kinda true, i read this some journal.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Gee.. talk about old news..
- banjk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1FN lame. This story is recurring. Perhaps a masterbatory ego?
- Oetzi, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2I learnt this from a pampers advert funnily enough.
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Dupe again
