- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually there isn't a single thing in the universe that isn't "natural". Everything is made from elements that naturally exist in the universe. This doesn't mean I'm saying that global warming isn't real, and isn't for the most part caused by humans. Just that the whole point of natural vs. unnatural is kind of mute. It should be described as beneficial vs. harmful. The term "natural" has been twisted by the conservative machine to instantly bring up the image of smelly drugged up hippies in the minds of the ignorant masses. If you say things are "harmfull", or "dangerous" they can't twist that. Global warming isn't going to destroy THE planet. It's going to destroy HUMAN civilization. The planet will be just fine, and actually much better off without us. So if people don't wise up soon we will just die off and make way for the next dominant lifeform to come forward. Hopefully they would be a bit smarter than us, and not kill themselves.

Many people have a hard time with this concept. Be careful how loudly you try to present it - some can't grasp it. I would expect most Digg users to be able to though.
We can take natural elements and change them, but we can not create or destroy. We can convert and change, nothing more.
If we were to release some natural stored energy (matter) and nuke each other in a final war, we don't create or destroy anything - just alter and convert. It isn't that abstract, just basic physics and the law of conservation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Conservation_of_Matter
" See also: Law of Conservation of Mass
The Law of Conservation of Energy basically states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can change its form.
The Law of Conservation of Mass basically states that mass cannot be created or destroyed, but can change its form."
-C - smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, that's almost as good an idea as using real trees to help deal with environmental problems.
- grizwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2now this is the kinda crap that will destroy the planet.
- lordelric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Global warming is clearly a problem, but by using this method of reducing it, aren't we just going to continue to get worse. It is the attitude and habbits that people have that is what will continue to make this a problem. We nee dto correct those before we can make any progress towards solving the global warming problem.
Never mind the fact that trees are not just carbon-dioxide reducers. How about they provide homes to many animals, birds, and insects. I do not think that these species will be able to make a home in a plastic tree.
Just plant more trees.
Many of us live in metropolitan centers where there is a very good public transportation system. and many things within these cities are so close together that you coulr walk or ride a bike. - Buddybot111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh god...
Seriously the comments here are driving me crazy. Talking about us being the cause of all destruction and hate in the world. It's insane, look you can spend your life saying whats the point where all gonna die anyway, or you can just say f**k it I'm gonna do what I can with the time I have. All I know is that I would live a much happier life driving fast cars, doing what I love, then sitting in a room thinking about how our species is ruining the world. You know what the problem is with people these days, everyone cares too much. Everyone cares about the animals, and the earth, and the plants, that they forget to even care about there own species. Yes its selfish, but every animal in the world is selfish theres nothing wrong with that. Untill some of you dimmwitted liberals get it through your head that saving the world is some kind of obligation of ours were not going to head in a direction of technological advancement were gonna head in a direction of fixing what we never destroyed. Were like any other animal that exists, not different, we all effect the earth and the earth adapts or we adapt it's the way of life and it's not gonna change. - Trojan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2TimmyK.
You too listen to rants from George Carlin it seems. "We're going away. Pack your *****, folks. We're going away. And we won't leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet'll be here and we'll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance." - deathBOB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lets just plant more trees.
- taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You contradict yourself. Since "man made global warming" is man made, man is the cause.
- hemidurango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, who's to blame for the last ice age? Can't pin that one on us! Besides, I hate cold weather, a little global warming wouldn't bother me a bit.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're releasing a ton of carbon into the atmosphere. That's undebatable. We might as well try to counter it with these trees if they're as good as they say they are.
- sky_blue_eyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol, this idea was on popular science a while back. i dugg it thinking they actually made a tree... that they could plant. this isnt cost-effective.

- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Who wants a giant goal post/venetian blind combo in their back yard?"
Who wants wires strung on polls all over your neighborhood? In other words, it doesn't matter. We screw up our land scape regardless. - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trees do more than convert CO2 into oxygen. They make homes for animals, food for insects, wood for humans, etc. This idea is just dumb. Plant real trees, morons.
- Stelmate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would be a great idea IF there was actualy evidence of global warming. This crazy bastard is trying to make money off a theory not solving a actualy fact. Global warming DOESN'T EXSIST, the history of the world has undergone many patterns of warming and cooling off, look it up.

Wow how very conservative of you Mr. Conservative. You sure know what the word CONSERVE means you dullard. "conservative vs. liberal" is a fantasy idea anyway. For your information there are no "liberals". There are people who call themselves "conservative" or "republican" (yet actually do the opposite of what the term conservative should imply), and then there is everyone else, who they call "liberals". It's a myth that you have fallen for hook line and sinker. When was the last time you ever heard anyone describe themselves as a "liberal"? It's only big mouth so called "conservatives" that use that term to describe people.
Anyway I hope one of the things you want to do in life ISN'T to have kids, because what kind of a planet are you planning on leaving for them? You are a selfish, shortsighted, mindless political drone who has freely given yourself over to the overlords who use you to increase their welth and power, while doing everything to hurt you, and destroy your chances at ever getting anywhere, or having a good life (because if you think you have a good life compared to what we should have all around the world given our technology and abilities at this point you are an idiot). So keep living in your little political fantasy world, and forget that what you support means that very soon it won't be possible for HUMANS to live on the planet. I'm sure that the last generation of humans, struggling to survive in the future you made for them, will think "well at least that ***** drove a good car, and had fun". - taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not so, the elements at the bottom of the periodic table are only man made. They do not occur naturally without our help.
- Leviter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid humans....
Let's give the scientist some artificial intelligence, so that he'll be more intelligent! :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why don't we just use real trees... and btw popular science is only good for the pictures... they never really do any of those products that they talk about in the magazine.. atleast i haven't seen anything of the products that they talked about in the past 7 years.

- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0....but there is no freaking global warming!!!!!
- thechitowncubs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is really cool
solar powered trees, heh - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do people realise that the earth isnt going top stay the same, the climates change, scientists have found climate trends from icecores dating back thousands of years.
I believe that there is a trend to all this, i.e.gets hotter then colder, but i also think we are causing some damage to the earth, more trees would be good, the real kinds by the way, i dont want any ***** man made trees. real trees do the job - danio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carlin for president jesus christ omfg
- Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I really have a hard time getting across to people is the point that humans are not the only producers of CO2 emissions. For instance, a single Volcano (can't remember the name) towards Africa's eastern side releases just as much and possibly more CO2 per year as the entire human race does in a given year. That is just one volcano, and there are a whole lot more across the landscape as well as at the depths of our oceans. There is a s#!$ ton of CO2 still dissolved in the remainder of earth's magma, as well as dissolved in it's oceans and lakes. I am not saying that because mother nature is doing this that we do not need to worry about what we put into the air, San Francisco/New York smog is a clear example of why. Just try to see the bigger picture.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@stelmate
Good point, and true.
But, hypothetically, what do you think would happen to our environment... if say... we were to pump all the oil up from the ground and set it on fire releasing billions of tons of co2 into the air? Do you think it might create some level of greenhouse effect? Change PH levels of rain? Affect the general health of animals (and humans) breathing it?
co2 and other mass-pollution have some bad side effects. Now if we could only get the environmentalist to stop saying the world will end and instead start citing fact such as "Breathing a lot of co2 is bad. We're also pretty sure that this much of a massive shift of ANYTHING into the air is going to have some pretty sh*ty side effects. What side effects you ask? That's the scary part - we have no freakin' idea! Maybe we should figure that out before we can't reverse something bad."
The biggest problem isn't a little warming. I would guess the biggest problem(s) are the ones we won't be able to predict. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just an idea. Plausable? Unlikely. Scalable? No. There are far better methods for CO2 control - ones that exist.
- mexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah! Mother nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's LOSING??
- jman420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I totally agree with TimmyK
- stanleyfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmmm.... At a brief glance, seems that this is a good idea, but I'm sure there are better ones since it seems that this would only slow global warming as opposed to stopping it.
- webby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0easier said then done...
"Hey look at me, im making a tree that cures poverty but all I have right now is a really crappy sketch of it." - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if we could get sea shells to grow on trees? That'd do it, I think.
These guys are right, nature needs a-fixin'. It's not us, it's natures fault for not keeping up. - Daikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"with a byproduct of the stuff seashells are made of."
That's a good idea. Let's all have a breathable atmosphere filled with seashell gasses. - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Explain how trees (artificial or not) are going to cool the sun?
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0/me predicts this will be the START of globarl warning.
- Hypnos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea now if we can just replace the people with plastic copies we could solve all the worlds problems.
- Stelmate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Chrono
I agree with you that a massive release of CO2 would definitely have a negative effect on the planet however if given time after the initial release the planet will heal itself, hell it has recovered from much worse (i.e. massive comets hitting it, which we know has happened by looking at our moon)
Our only problem would be surviving the massive release but we're pretty inventive as human beings and I'm sure we could come up with some form of artificial atmosphere to contain ourselves. I just get irritated at scientist that open their mouth too much and the mass population eats it up like a fat kid at a candy store. Chances are better that with all the stupid wars going on now days that we'll all blow ourselves up before we even have a change to enjoy a nice global warming anyway. Any real scientist should be studying a way to install logic in politics, now that would be a useful project for the planet. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I agree with you that a massive release of CO2 would definitely have a negative effect on the planet however if given time after the initial release the planet will heal itself, hell it has recovered from much worse"
Ah, but the problem, you see, is that we humans only tend to have a lifespan of about 80 years. Alas, we can't wait the thousands upon thousands upon thousands of years for the earth to heal itself.
We're a parasite on the planet earth. A smart parasite doesn't kill it's host.
As for the natural vs. 'unnatural' argument, you're all arguing semantics. - mpamike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and how long will it take before we truly understand what we people (ants) mess up in such a huge system as global weather... People we can't even figure out how to live together. We can't figure out simple stuff like equality, right and wrong or freedom..
We don't more tools to *****-up more stuff we don't understand. - zenscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeeeeeah, so anyway, has anyone beaten solitaire on their iPod? With that little touch wheel it took me about 3 hours, and I'm nearly blind now, but I did it. I really did it.
- Comsamvimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, but they're much more efficient than a living tree. The only bad part is the aesthetical qualities. Who wants a giant goal post/venetian blind combo in their back yard? Any takers?
- ScottyTee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Who wants a giant goal post/venetian blind combo in their back yard?"

Exactly....

http://www.diggfans.com - rebblescum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems a bit like the ramblings of Dr. Science, however, I hope it can be a practical device, but, given this is an article from February 2003, where is this idea now?
- zusana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool. Combine this with billboards and you may have something.
- Nidobolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like a good idea but real trees would be better. (animals need real trees for shelter/food) What would be nice is if we incorporated the artificial trees with cars or something. But then again, you have to clean them... Hmm. Nonetheless, I think they should implement the idea into a working model.
..wow this spell check rocks XD (I'm a first timer) - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I h8 both the extreme right and the extreme left. Why can't we recycle both groups? Then something would get done in this country. Then again, I am a radical centrist.
As for capturing carbon, would it not be better to capture it near greenhouses and then pipe the captured carbon directly in there to stimulate more plant growth?
Me thinks that would allow a growth in hydroponics. At least in terms of pot production... - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...or maybe if we just filled the oceans with ice cream and landed some sno-cones on the sun. I love science.
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad global warming is as natural as light and day. Global warming is a natural occurrence in the Earth's cycle. An Ice age happens every 15,000-30,000 years, while the stage that we are in, only lasts about ~10,000 years. Then the sun warms the Earth and then you have your oceans, while the sun is continuously melting the ice NATURALLY, its a normal cycle that happens over and over and over. All mans global warming effects don't really do much. Cool idea though.
