- lucidguru, on 05/14/2008, -10/+218Nope, but my brain is.
- Nougat, on 05/14/2008, -13/+32Actually, in this case, your brain is telling you the truth. There are no receptors where the optic nerve joins the back of the eye. That's where your blind spot is. Your brain is not receiving any data about light that lands in that area, and so it doesn't tell you anything about that area.
Ordinarily, your brain fills in empty spaces with what it presumes should be there - in hearing as well as vision, and definitely memory. This is a way to trick your brain into being straight with you, for once.- Vironex, on 05/14/2008, -2/+18Did you not read the part where it says the brain is actually filling in information with assumptions? Or see the page where a red dot appears? This is not an example of your brain "bring straight" with you.
- Nougat, on 05/14/2008, -4/+11Dammit, you're right., Your brain is filling in white where there's actually nothing.

filling in occurs in visual cortex, not retina. - emjaymj, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2What part of "brain" makes you think he was referring to the retina?
- mesoiam, on 05/14/2008, -4/+2"Your brain is filling in white where there's actually nothing." Stop trying to be sarcastic. Try opening the image in a paint program, it works with any background colour (yes colour). How do you explain it now, are your eyes making up the missing colour information by themselves? No, your brain is tricking you, not your eyes.
- Nougat, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2mesoiam: I wasn't being sarcastic. I said white because the adjacent background is white. Of course it would work with any background color. "Where there's actually nothing" refers to the fact that that part of your vision is not receiving any signal, hence, nothing.

- Nougat, on 05/14/2008, -4/+11Dammit, you're right., Your brain is filling in white where there's actually nothing.
- barddzen, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Another interesting aspect of this affect is if you have a condition like glaucoma, increased ocular pressure, the increase in pressure pushes on the back of your eye and can depress the optic nerve area (it actually looks concave through ophthalmoscope or slit lamp). There are tests that can measure your visual field and blind spot size and how it changes over time. Very interesting.
- michaelb323, on 05/14/2008, -2/+13She looked 18 officer, I swear.

- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/14/2008, -1/+13Move the mouse around the circle to see exactly how big the blind spot is. (as the mouse appears and disappears)
- peterjmag, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3I've seen a few blind spot demonstrations before, but I've never tried moving the mouse around the area before. Definitely cool.
- Cyborg326, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1sounds cool, would try though I'm not sure I can multitask to that degree. It would be easier if someone moved the mouse while you stared at the x after find the blind spot.

- sennister, on 05/14/2008, -14/+31I have won many beers by using this trick on people in bars. It was shown to me in aviation training with the US Army as we were attending classes that taught us aided (night vision goggles) and unaided night vision skills.

- mesoiam, on 05/14/2008, -6/+3Well done you!
- Ultage, on 05/14/2008, -2/+51How exactly did you win the beers? Did you steal them off the bar when they were in people's blind spot or something?
- Stavrosian, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8You bet them a beer that you can make the spot disappear, genius.
- photokeith, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Brilliant! I'm off to Moe's.
- Ryan166, on 05/14/2008, -9/+11if you come up to me in a bar and start talking about photoreceptors and blind spots, i'll smash a bottle over your head.
- skyroket, on 05/14/2008, -2/+10Because you are a ***** moron who didn't read this article, so you wouldn't know what he'd be talking about??? You can pick up a lot of chicks talking about photoreceptors and blind spots.
- mKdiR, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8I'd love to see you try that.

- ChronoMojo, on 05/14/2008, -15/+17Thank you for your service to our country.
- seanc6610, on 05/14/2008, -5/+7why is he being dugg down?
- ElBeh, on 05/14/2008, -3/+4Because he's being sarcastic, most likely, and doesn't realize that everyone, even soldiers, deserve a break sometime.
If he's not being sarcastic, then I agree. Thank you, sennister, for supporting our country.- ChronoMojo, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Yes, I was being wholeheartedly honest. I come from a family that thanks military service. One of my best friends is in the air force, and I think of him every day.
The sad thing is... I was expecting to be dugg down on that. How sad that my expectations came to fruition.

- buddypriefert, on 05/14/2008, -84/+19Cool! Stuff like this makes it hard for me to not believe in intelligent design. Oh wait, I'm on Digg so I better not say something like that.
- alexforcefive, on 05/14/2008, -10/+39An obvious flaw in the "design" makes you believe in intelligent design? If the eye was intelligently designed, the optic nerve would be off to the side somewhere so as not to interfere with the photoreceptors. This would probably mean a slight restructuring of the skull to compensate.
I see this article as yet another piece of evidence in favour of evolution- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -4/+27I'm sorry you misunderstood what he was saying. I'll clarify for you:
"Because I don't understand how the brain could fill-in information for me while processing what my eyes see and I'm either too lazy or too stupid to investigate why that happened I'll just believe that the flying spaghetti monster willed it to be the case and that answer is good enough for me. Oh noes, I said something stupid in a room full of people where some of them may know what actually causes this so I should just shut up instead of having my mind expanded." - SqAR, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Just simpler: If the eye would have been properly designed, the "wiring" would be behind the optic sensors not in front of those and so there would be no need to pass through the layer of optic sensors and leave a hole therein doing so.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -4/+27I'm sorry you misunderstood what he was saying. I'll clarify for you:
- johnnysaucepn, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9Mammal eyes are really badly designed for this reason. However, the 'Intelligent Designer' got the octopus eye wired up the correct way round. Why this Designer didn't wipe out or redesign all the mammals, like his supporters claim he has with other predecessors, we'll never know.
- teamparadox, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3I dont understand how a serious flaw in the design of our eyes makes it hard not to believe in intelligent design. If we were created by a being said being must be incredibly smart and powerful yet they "designed" us with more flaws then i care to type here. Doesnt sound too intelligent to me, in fact it sounds alot like evolution.
- buddypriefert, on 05/15/2008, -2/+0Wouldn't it be pretty arrogant to assume that this is a "flaw"? Perhaps He should have consulted all of us Humans on exactly how the eye should have been designed. I'm sure your way would be better, despite thousands of more years in testing viva "evolution". Wouldn't evolution itself cancel out this design "flaw"? Example, wouldn't the mutated person with the "correct eye" avoid being eaten by the hidden tiger?
- talonstriker, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3Your logic makes me want to wish that you become extinct.
- pprovo1, on 05/14/2008, -8/+3Yeah and why did he design SHMEGMA?!?! EXPLAIN THAT ONE MISTER...dick cheese
- vawksel, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3Quite the opposite. This obvious design flaw would be something that an intelligent creator would not do.
If you were designing an eye, or camera for that matter, would you start off saying "Lets make it so there is a 5 to 10% blind spot right off the center of the vision, but dont worry, we'll just fill in what SHOULD be there or at least what the brain thinks should be there later on".
I can see Logitech coming out with the Webcams now, "Built in blind spot! Just like the intelligent designer intended".- buddypriefert, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1Cute/humorous comment, but my point is, for a moment, let's assume that there is an intelligent creator. Some "thing" of that magantitude would certainly know far more than we humans right? And thus, perhaps would know that by moving the blind spot to a different location would have "x" consequences that would fault vision (or say, muscular restriction, or whatever), in another area. I'm trying to say, that us trying to assume a "creator" made a mistake based on our punny understanding is like a hamster trying to understand the actions of his captor.
- alexforcefive, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2The flaw in your logic here is that we (as a species) actually have the foresight and intelligence to design a better eye. If you widen the scope to robotics, we already have. If you want to keep it biological, we're about ten years away from growing it.
Obviously our intelligence isn't compelling evidence against the existence of god, but it's clearly not evidence in favour of it- buddypriefert, on 05/15/2008, -3/+0One thing that seems to be consistent over the course of history is that no matter how hard man works to think he has out witted nature, nature wins in the end. We think we can build biospheres, etc. and later to find out that it is more complex than we imagined. I don't doubt we will cuture seemingly perfect eye, but something tells me the end result (maybe not for hundreds of years) will prove we had it all wrong. I know I sound all full of fluff to the non-believers, but it makes sense to me. Guess people will still have to call me an idiot, but I'm giving it (these reasons) a respectable consideration.

- acr2001, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3Wow what an unintelligent idiot you are. This article shows a DESIGN FLAW and you consider that proof for "intelligent design". You really need to learn about the world around you and develop some thinking skills before you spout any more drivel.
- GregFD3S, on 05/14/2008, -3/+2Intelligent design? If we were all "designed intelligently", people like you would not be here.
Fail.
- alexforcefive, on 05/14/2008, -10/+39An obvious flaw in the "design" makes you believe in intelligent design? - lukeo, on 05/14/2008, -59/+4Our eyes have a blind spot? Woah... I'm so shocked and astounded I'm gonna bury this story into my blind spot.
- jd72277, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9take that!
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -4/+11Oh please tell me what you're going to do next. I'm on the edge of my ***** seat with anticipation.
- secrity, on 05/14/2008, -3/+8The term "douchebag" came to mind when I read lukeo's comment.
- skyroket, on 05/14/2008, -3/+22 Jäger Bombs down heea, chief!
- helikopter, on 05/14/2008, -5/+43maybe it's cause i haven't gone to bed yet, but this blew my mind
- Morfine, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7im so tired that i didnt even see the cross that it mentioned
- MisterNetHead, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7Lay off the reefer boys.
- MMaster23, on 05/14/2008, -11/+6Doesn't work for me, but I have some form of cataract on one eye making me pretty much look 80% with my left eye and about 20% with my right. I can see just like any other human being, my left eye is just better, I can't look with my right eye alone and sometimes, just sometimes, it's harder to judge distances ..
(And no my eyes aren't ***** up)- LiveDesign, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14Then try closing your right eye and look at the dot rather than the plus and start moving closer to the dot. It should work.
- j3ffr0, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1This should be the only reply to MMaster23's comment...
- mysql101, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3then save the image to disk, rotate it 180 degrees and follow the directions using your left eye instead of right.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5You forgot the bit where he's suppose to print the image out, take a picture of the print-out (on a wooden table), develop the film, scan the picture back into the computer, rotate the picture 180 degrees, then follow the directions using his left eye.
- snolan1990, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3if thats meant to be a joke its not funny and if you know how to do all of what you just descibed you would know that it is easy to rotate by 180 degrees
- Adys, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2You missed it badly, but since I'm nice, here it is:
just use the cross instead of the dot. Don't save it to disk.
- Adys, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2You missed it badly, but since I'm nice, here it is:
- itzac, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1You could save a step if you rotated the picture before scanning it in. Just thought I'd point that out.
- snolan1990, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3if thats meant to be a joke its not funny and if you know how to do all of what you just descibed you would know that it is easy to rotate by 180 degrees
- WhatInThe42o, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Or just look at the dot, and make the cross disappear. Path of least resistance, folks.
- h3lx, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1***** you and your logic. This is SUPPOSE to be complicated.
- Gizza, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1I can not get this to work either, but I'm the opposite to you, I've always had a very weak left eye, to the point where if I close my right eye I can't really read, and as a result I have very poor depth perception. Perhaps my brain is just so you to compensating for my left eye barely seeing anything.
Didn't work trying it the other way around either, that just worked out with everything being blurry. - WhatInThe42o, on 05/14/2008, -1/+10Based on the description you gave of 'some form of cataract,' I'd say that your eyes are indeed ***** up.
- skyroket, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3I was about to say... you just got done telling us how ***** up your eyes are, and then you tell us they're not ***** up. gg
- LiveDesign, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14Then try closing your right eye and look at the dot rather than the plus and start moving closer to the dot. It should work.
- caruso, on 05/14/2008, -16/+7trippy: once you've got the spot in the blind spot move the end of your finger around in that blind spot (whilst still looking at the cross) it waves and quivers! how awesomely lame. (plz dun digg me down this comment aint that bad)
- helikopter, on 05/14/2008, -3/+5i tried that, but i just saw less of my finger.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -2/+12Maybe you should focus more on your English skills instead of fingering yourself.
- caruso, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2Sorry, I shall speak appropriately as the queen may not be able to read it.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -3/+4ball bounce tree wind moo jumping around in the increase size make eating
Could you understand that? That's what I saw when trying to decipher what the ***** you were saying.

- Danby123, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Hell.
- skyroket, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Every once in awhile we find someone posting an intelligent remark... but those are so hard to write, so...***** it...make a joke instead!

- da_bradler, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5see but this article goes beyond just the optical illusion, I know I have seen it before. but not until this article have I seen someone properly explain what is happening.
- MxM111, on 05/14/2008, -2/+318 century called. It wants the the illusion back. Actually it can be even earlier, when people new about this illusion, they just could not get enough diggs (for obvious reason). It is amazing, but the world may have existed before the internets.
- antipoet, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Hey now, I was just thinking again about this illusion the other day. I was hoping to find it somewhere again. Convenient that it pops up again like this.

- Chunken, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5omg my blind spot is huge!
- wushu18t, on 05/14/2008, -4/+12my blind spot is bigger than it seems. i found my distance where the spot disappears then i moved the cursor towards the spot. it disappears a bit before and a bit after the spot. a radius of about 1 inch from the center of the spot.
- lives4him06, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Size matters.
- WoodyJI, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1You might want to have an eye doctor check that out...it could be an early sign of glaucoma. That, or maybe you were closer than you needed to be to the spot. The closer you are, the bigger the area of blind spot projected on the screen.
- dlite922, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1mine was 1 inch wide and 1.25 high. Either we're normal, or there's something wrong with both of us. :S

- RockNRollBeaver, on 05/14/2008, -8/+9I didn't know that we had this blind spot...pretty surprising. But i wonder does this effect us doing daily things? such as driving, sports, Et cetera Et cetera????
- Echomote, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3ET phone home?
- LeRenard, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5With two good eyes you've got enough information about whats in the blind spots that it shouldn't be a problem. It does however become a concern for people like military pilots.

- RockNRollBeaver, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1But lets just say if we didn't have the blind spot would our accuracy improve on stuff? such as shooting a rifle?, I'm not retarded or a " n00b " as GeekyGerge would say i just would like to understand it more.

- zantos420, on 05/14/2008, -3/+20i know this is a lame comment but damn that is that cool i had no idea we had a blind spot like that - let alone that big!
- aaron.dunlap, on 05/14/2008, -10/+5seriously people? i think this was in a Highlights magazine I had when I was 8...... sometimes digg feels like Hollywood; you only get something really new once every blue moon. Everything else is just recycled crap from the 80's.
- katiekatekate, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3You were still reading Highlights at 8 years old?
- Zounas, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1That was last week.
- katiekatekate, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3You were still reading Highlights at 8 years old?
- MrFurious2k, on 05/14/2008, -0/+135Just imagine thousands of people this morning bobbing back and forth next to their monitor with one eye closed.
- roastedbagel, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3For me it wasnt bobbing so much as it was holding my feet up while holding on the desk pulling and pushing myself back and forth. Yea, manager thought it was a bit wierd.
- Zounas, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1I do that all the time!
- bajones, on 05/14/2008, -1/+16Even more amazing. When the spot disappears, move your mouse pointer back and forth across the spot where the black spot was. It gives you an even better idea of how big your "Hole" is.
- dirtyfrog, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5If you keep going through the links under the cross and circle you will get to a java application that lets you plot the points around the dot so you can see the size of your blind spot.

- Arcesius, on 05/14/2008, -6/+3Ok, I'm kind of scared now.
- Calcularius, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Were you blindsided?
- neko, on 05/14/2008, -2/+35Yes, yes, we all know about the blind spot already, but I'm still digging this because it was an entertaining diversion from work.
And in the end, is that not what Digg is all about?- MalkyMalc, on 05/14/2008, -0/+21Yes. Now that I've discovered my blind spot, I can hide my work in it.
- xenetar, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1I was waiting for that one self-cool person who would say "OH EVERYONE knows that!" and make anyone else shut-up their excitement or lie along to not look like an idiot. Looks like I found em!!
- jamesdew, on 05/14/2008, -3/+4there are colleges in america with welsh names now? How do you people pronounce bryn mawr?
- wilywampa, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2That's also the name of a street in Chicago. I pronounce it "brin mar" ("brin" like "bin", "mar" like "far").
- secrity, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1The people in Pennsylvania pronounce it the same way as you pronounce your street name, although the accent will be a bit different.
- jamesdew, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0i live in wales and I would pronounce the bryn the same but I would saw mawr more like maowwwwrrrrrrr
- GregFD3S, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2You run like a welshman.
- wilywampa, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2That's also the name of a street in Chicago. I pronounce it "brin mar" ("brin" like "bin", "mar" like "far").
- BuckCynnie, on 05/14/2008, -10/+4What a sad state of affairs, we have "intelligent" people here who have a decent amount of knowledge to peruse the Internet and even post comments on Digg, YET, are amazed to find out that the optical nerve that connects to each eye causes a blind spot in our vision. American education at its best.
- MisterNetHead, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3If you took the time to read the comments above yours, you would find that scores of people are saying they learned about this in school.
Shove off, *****.

- holyreality, on 05/14/2008, -8/+3old. did this as part of lab in 9th grade bio.

- MildApplause, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3Well, I was really tripped out by it and found it way interesting!
But, if you've already seen it, they should take it down.

- thzae, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Digg ads know their audience O.o
- Flipperbw, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3you all really haven't seen this before?
- bokep, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4I keep my mirrors aligned perfectly so I don't get any blind spots. Stupid website thinks it can trick me.
- Ph0biA, on 05/14/2008, -1/+12Ok, I'm not trying to sound like a freak of nature or brag, but did this not work for anyone? Ive closed my eye, covered it, tried the other eye, did it upside down while drinking milk and singing the national anthem and still nothing.
- talonstriker, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3freak of nature....
- holygram, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2bragger.
- Chalks777, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2I couldn't get it to work with my left eye, even when I flipped the images around. Maybe I get distracted too easily? I got it to work fine with my right eye though.
- Wartz, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Same here, I tried both sides, both eyes, swapped the cross/dot around, everything. It didnt work :S ???
- Calcularius, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4You're doing it wrong.
- dlite922, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5There's only two explanations:
1. You did it wrong
2. You don't have the optical nerve end, yes you're blind. You must be hearing what i'm saying instead of reading it.
If number two, that means you have NO idea what i'm gonna say next hehehe 3v`1 L@uG#

- nateIT, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3this didn't work for me in till i tried it backwards. its probably because my left eye is my dominate eye.
- sab0tage, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2It should work on both eyes...
- Montious, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Fascinating
- theratdotus, on 05/14/2008, -3/+3this did not work for me, the dot was always there ... =(
- Suspension, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2You're doing it wrong.
- Rocco03, on 05/14/2008, -0/+16Nice, it reminds me of this illusion:
http://www.geckoandfly.com/wp-content/uploads/2007 ...
Look closely at the cross and the spots will disappear.- WoodyJI, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2That's the Troxler Effect. Things that don't move disappear. This is why you can't see your blind spot, or for that matter, any of the blood vessels/nerves in your eye. The same thing happens w/ any other nerves on your body. Are you aware of the feeling of your socks long after you put them on?
- kjames00, on 05/14/2008, -2/+3I would like to say that the dot never disappeared but it did...damn I wanted to be better then average!
- Zounas, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0It's "than". You fail.
- jhaks, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1This comment makes no sense. Being better than average would imply that the characteristic is variable, but this is not variable since everyone has a blind spot.
- suminona, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1You can actually do this without any specific graphic. Just close one of your eyes and move the cursor around while focusing on a spot on your monitor. Eventually, the pointer should disappear and reappear.
- superdude16, on 05/14/2008, -3/+0cool
