Are ‘Designer Babies’ Next?
russiatoday.ru — A new law which could allow parents to create so-called “designer babies” is being considered by British politicians. But the complex bill, which is meant to reform outdated fertility legislation is causing controversy.

- danielpyle, on 03/17/2008, -5/+3I created a few designer babies....that I know about.
- Member148, on 03/18/2008, -5/+3I thought they all were designed. :-)
- hello2usir, on 03/18/2008, -5/+3FTA: "the legislation seeks to introduce the creation of animal-human hybrids for medical research"
Umm.. no.- tehbored, on 03/18/2008, -2/+3Why not? The Idea is to create them with little or no brain function. They would actually "feel" anything.
- hello2usir, on 03/18/2008, -3/+3Because we don't need to give furries more reasons to procreate.
- chris9902, on 03/18/2008, -2/+3Why not us? At least we can control it. Would you rather China did it?
- blast_flame, on 03/18/2008, -1/+1Why not? They won't be made intelligent.
- countmischief, on 03/18/2008, -1/+1This philosophy is merely a result of the moral zeitgeist, in 200 years this will be the norm.
- tehbored, on 03/18/2008, -3/+5I can understand why some people may think this is a bad thing, but I say ***** 'em! Less genetic disorders in society can only be a good thing.
- starbabe, on 03/18/2008, -2/+6You assume that the doctors aren't going to screw things up. ***** they can't even make a pill that doesn't have 20 side effects, but you want them messing with DNA.
- blast_flame, on 03/18/2008, -1/+3The problems things like this tend to create are less than the problems they solve. Progress works by two steps forward and one backwards but over time it will greatly improve our lives.
- countmischief, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1Baby Jesus is going to cry if you embrace technology, and try to better the human condition.
- passedoutghost, on 03/18/2008, -2/+0Not necessarily. We need retards to make fun of
/joke.

- flashboy131, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3I would be suprised to find out if this wasn't happening already.
- frogman54, on 03/18/2008, -0/+8I want a baby with gills and a shark fin. Shark babies rule.
- chris9902, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6no frickin' lazer beems?
- countmischief, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1It would be cool for about 3 months then I'd tire from it, then maybe transfuse the shark baby with some antlers.
- DrDragun, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1I almost came as a shark actually, but then I realized an eagle's slightly better.
- stuartjmoore, on 03/18/2008, -1/+3The argument against it is contradictory. Designer babies are bad because everyone will look the same, that's bad because people have different tastes in looks... wait, what?
That, and I wouldn't mind getting CF out of my gene pool. - shoveitfatty, on 03/18/2008, -2/+2Less uglies running around? I'm in.
- nitsnipe, on 03/18/2008, -4/+1Hmmm, didn't the Nazis try to do this on a mass production basis
- blast_flame, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3The problem with what the nazis tried to do was that it involved killing innocent people and a general loss of freedom. This involves no such thing.
- kinship, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2Oh brave new world..
- passedoutghost, on 03/18/2008, -0/+0That's what I thought, but then if that were the case I doubt any parent would want to give birth to a Gamma, Delta or Epsilon child.
- dancee, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4This may help in correcting certain genetic defects like color blindness, short height even certain health problems like diabetes.
- ScottMcQueen, on 03/18/2008, -1/+0Big Fat Baby-Eating O'Brian?!
AYE!- passedoutghost, on 03/18/2008, -0/+0Git in mah bellah!

- charbarred, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2And still no front page thanks to Digg's great new algorithm.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2"For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
***** Gattaca- JigoroKano, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1The problem in Gattaca was two-fold. (1) Human engineering was rampant and (2) you had no privacy in the issue. The government and your employer could discriminate based upon your DNA, which shouldn't be any of their business regardless.
- countmischief, on 03/18/2008, -5/+0Designer babies... sounds like a new career for homosexuals is here. I'm a baby designer!
- KenCW, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1and Michael Jackson rejoices
- protodon, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2We'll never have designer babies or awesome Thundercat looking animal hybrid people. It's just the way things are.
- rhabd0mancer, on 03/18/2008, -0/+5New mothers are going to be even more annoying. "Look at my precious designer baby! Isn't she precious? The freckles were my idea!"
- jeremyduffy, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2If the research helps prevent birth defects, I'm for it. If it creates humans who are nothing but test subjects, I'm against it. Well, that was easy.
- xTRUMANx, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3"...but a deaf lesbian couple in the U.S. created a baby with hearing difficulties on purpose, choosing a sperm donor with generations of deafness in his family."
Anyone have a good reason why this should be legal? To me that just shows the selfishness of those two women. Why have your child go through all the challenges you went through? To have something in common?- Nudar, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1I know. That is totally outrageous.
