Ansel Adams Pioneering Pics of U.S. National Parks
archives.gov — Great B&W collection, over 200 pics, from National Archives. Pics from Yosemite,Tetons, Glacier Park especially strong; many are beautiful, striking, classics. Adams was a pioneer. Most pics were taken as part of a gov't commission to chronicle beauty of the wilderness then protected by the U.S. Parks Service.

- openthink, on 05/02/2008, -0/+10Really a great gallery. Need to scroll down a bit to get to the category lists. It's a pretty bare bones interface -- maintained by the gov't -- but definitely worth exploring IMO.
- DeskFlyer, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7Ansel was a true photographic genius.
- Rotzooi, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Good to see the recent increase in interest for Adams. Multiple Digg articles, PBS programs, exhibitions - the man deserves it.
He was a true American Hero - with his non-lethal shots he educated generations and is responsible for the creation and protection of many important nature reserves. - YamiJim, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3Best photographer of all time, hands down.
- Hoogs, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7Wow, this is weird. After doing a project on him for my photography class, articles about him keep hitting the front page. I really wish I had known about this site earlier :) He truly was a great photographer.
- j0hnk377y, on 05/02/2008, -6/+2He needs to add some color. He should buy a nice 5MP point and click.
- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1He used a view camera.....that's photographer a point and click is for people who know nothing about cameras.
Add color?!?!?!!!!!!!! You don't know a thing about photography do you!?- TheBanditKing, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Did you fall and break your sarcasm detector?
- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1sarcasm? Nothing about my comment had anything to do with sarcasm
- TheBanditKing, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2oh do i really have to spell it out for you? *sigh*
j0hn377y was being sarcastic.
his comment was a funny joke.
ha ha...? - Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Well some people are stupid enough to believe that color would be better. I don't see his comment has a funny joke.
HAHA
- Bizarrkley, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1You really aren't a funny person are you? Go back to watching Sesame street, it's more entertaining...
- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Actually, thats what I'm watching right now :)

- homerj1965, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Dugg for B/W.
- freebsdmike, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3I remember looking at his work when I was really young and my dad telling me all about it. He inspired my love of black and white photography.
- AzeemAhmed, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4very nice pics :)
- siktath, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Is he happy with the way his gov't has destroyed those parks, so far?
- digjam, on 05/02/2008, -7/+1Nice pics..but would be even more beautiful in color...but again those were taken during B&W era..!
- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4How do you figure they would be more beautiful in color? Black and white offers simplicity and art. Using the lighting, filters and development offers the range of tones. It wouldn't look nearly as beautiful if these where even thought to need to be in color.
- digjam, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1Are you kidding me? you are saying those landscape pics would look better in black and white and not in color?
and BTW ..its "WERE" not "WHERE"- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4They are in black and white and yes I'm saying they are better in the form of photography due to the fact they are in B/W. It's arts choice on color or b/w film and might i say ansel adams did a fine choice in all his work.

- Bizarrkley, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I see what you did there...

- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Then go for it. Just hope it lasts longer then ansels did
- Hexious, on 05/02/2008, -0/+0True... but at least some of the best master printers of all time were in it and some marvelous work came to be from it... just look at Weston.
- Jeffiner25, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Thats very true as well

- Supernova36, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1I love how Ansel Adams only gets 351 diggs, but some crappy over the top HDR gallery will get thousands..
