Planes as they break the sound barrier!
-grandpa - MattBot5000, on 09/07/2008, -7/+43Why do people think a condensation cloud means breaking the sound barrier?
- AmICoolNow, on 09/07/2008, -4/+27It was sort of funny the first time, but now I ***** hate people like you.
- KokomoNYC, on 09/07/2008, -4/+26It would be pretty amazing to see a picture break the sound barrier...
- DeskFlyer, on 09/06/2008, -3/+23Some explanation regarding the mechanics behind how such clouds form around transonic aircraft:

- OfNumbers, on 09/07/2008, -4/+20Because they also know McDonalds uses 100% lean, unabused, American raised, well fed, happy, clean and content with dying livestock. Because they also think that Dean Koontz is a good writer. Because they believe punctuation marks go outside of quotations. Because Digg says it is breaking the sound barrier.

- pharmakon, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12I'd rather see a sound barrier break a picture.
- Sil369, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12In Soviet Russia...
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+12i wanna see what happens after they break the LIGHT barrier. if there's anything to see, that is
- ZutroyZuuts, on 09/07/2008, -2/+12Check this video
http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=orjsjb&s=4 - HalsMyPal, on 09/07/2008, -0/+8you can see that in nuclear reactors that are incased in hard water because the water is so dense the speed of light is lower but the radiation goes the speed of light in a vacuum and causes a blue glow. It is called Čerenkov radiation

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68 ... - davecachia, on 09/07/2008, -3/+11That is the most clever thing i've seen on digg in awhile.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+8What you are seeing is a Prandtl-Glauert Singularity and not a shock wave.

- tabularassa, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6mirror-roll?
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6That showed a lot of duplicate photos.
- EmperorOfCheese, on 09/07/2008, -7/+13Because when you break the sound barrier a condensation cloud forms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prandtl-Glauert_Singu ... - Plower, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5inaccurate. if my grandpa touched the internet, something, somewhere would explode.
- Sil369, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5It is now:
http://img393.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jetfacenh ... - 801NvizioN, on 09/07/2008, -1/+6It gets better every time.

- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/06/2008, -4/+9The image of the space shuttle, with the rockets firing, is spectacular
- Pedestrian101, on 09/07/2008, -1/+6Cool, and it's not about McCain/Palin.
- MILFMOBILE69, on 09/07/2008, -2/+6Buried for breaking the resubmit barrier.
- Jericon, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4God I hope you're kidding...
- RachaelMichele, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5No one is going to believe me, but that's my husband's plane. He's a B1 WSO. He's deployed right now with the Thunderbirds. (the B1 Thunderbirds, not the other ones)
- darkfate, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5That is bringing back horrible memories of Physics class for me!
- Urgoz, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4I typically don't dig comments, but this one is so true that it deserves to be dug. Bravo.
- lulzitsadigg, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4oh, ***** you
- DangQuesadilla, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3When we break the server there will be a small white cloud around your computer.
- ArkRaider1936, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Cubert J. Farnsworth: That's impossible. You cannot go faster than the speed of light.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Exactly. That's why scientists increased the speed of light in 2208. - chrissku, on 09/07/2008, -3/+6I love this picture every time it's on the front page of dig.
- Zaneris, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not... I honestly hope you are.
- Habemus, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4Dugg down and buried - inaccurate. These are condensation clouds, which form in areas where there are large pressure deltas.
- miko555, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3A few of these are fake, a helecopter is incapable of breaking the sound barrier, as is the regular plane in the 4th image, since it isn't even structurally sound enough
- anonymous1986, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Ok special relativity course 101 required here. The group velocity cannot be faster than the speed of light
- anonymous1986, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3You're right, should have made myself more clear, the speed of light in a vacuum.
- ZiggyILM, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4There are occasions when the period goes outside quotation marks... other than that, you're comment was fabulously sarcastic.
- erkokite, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Maybe he was. He did crash an NF-104 trying to break the Russian time to climb record...
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+3Buried for using pics stolen from airliners.net.
- ackbz1, on 09/07/2008, -3/+5this was already on digg
- Sil369, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2dagg
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+3i don't know why i thought this was hilarious...
- whatever01, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2yeah, funny the difference between acceleration and velocity.
- unradical, on 09/07/2008, -2/+4Its a pretty cool experience first hand to go super sonic, but you don't see any clouds or anything from inside the cockpit. However, after you turn off the afterburners, it feels as if the jet hit a wall, despite the fact you'll probably still be traveling upwards of 500 mph.
- Radical5, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2lol
