I for one welcome our new, Giant Wasp overlords. - alikizmaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Jesus Christ! it's a wasp, get in the car!
- MediaMoguls, on 10/12/2007, -4/+192if you nailed that thing out of the air with a baseball bat it would probably make a cool noise
- astroshot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@retral
Here in georgia too, I always knew their name as a japanese hornet. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+213I would hate to even step on it, for fear it would shove me off, and then attack me with extreme prejudice.
- jwyles, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Now THAT is a wasp on steroids! Wonder if he knows how to hit a baseball?
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -3/+89I thought I read Amazing: Giant Asian Wrap, and thought that sounds delicious.

- handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16You have no idea...we actually had a few of this type of bug flying around in my neigborhood and "IN" my highschool gym...they are the scariest bug i have ever seen...at first i thought it was a hummingbird so i bent down close to it, thats when i saw it and flipped out...

Add a little teriyaki sauce and i'll bet they taste like chicken. - texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63I'll bet money there are undiscovered species deep in the Amazon rain forest that would put that thing to shame.

- archcvd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually... It's kind of cute :)
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Texpundit, I found one every bit as big from the Amazon, it's calld a tarantula hawk. The sting is described as baining excruciating, but they aren't as likely to attack people. They live anywhere tarantulas do. It is also the New Mexico state insect, so I'm guessing you have them in Texas as well.

Vespa?
(Vespa- (ves-pa) n; Wasp)
The wasp woman? - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They are very common over in Bosnia, I don't know about the rest of the Europe, my grandpa got stung by 10 of them about 3 years ago, he lived fortunately, but their stings can be deadly to a lot of people. And then I had a friend over there who accidentally stepped on their nest and got several dozen stings at the very least.
The damn things often dig out their nest underground with just a tiny hole at the surface and the whole colony lives together like bees. So when you step on a hollow piece of ground it collapses in and they go after you. You can generally tell where they live because they're often going in and out so you want to stay as far as possible because they are temperamental.
Bees are much kinder though, not like the US Killer bees. These actually let you pet them when they're pollinating flowers and they rarely sting. They let me pet them at least... - Dithre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Will it blend? Please?
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You think thats scary?
I once went out for a walk in the woods with my dad, he got pretty drunk and threw a rock at a hornets nest.. "I ***** HATE hornets!!"

Thanks! That's exactly what it looks like. Since I found that thing last summer, I haven't been able to find anyone that knows what it is. Cicada Killer is so much more badass than "giant stingy bug". - alx359, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_killer:
"Although they appear to attack anything which moves near their territories, male cicada killers are actually investigating anything which might be a female cicada killer ready to mate."
Males are the same in all species. LOL - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6 by kidblast
@ Boondoggle...

The first time I saw one ( I was 6 or so ) it scared the crap out of me. But they're relatively harmless. Unless you're a Cicada. - FishRHuman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or watermelons!

Or.....flowers! - retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OH THE BEEMANITY!
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The very largest wasp in the world, considerably larger than that, is now extinct.
It once lived in the south pacific, but unfortunately for it, the locals considered its larvae a delicacy. The last one was eaten in the 60's, if memory serves.- imperium2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Pretty, pretty bug...come into this nice warm pot...yum
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the guy whose job it was to harvest the babies of the world's largest wasp.
- Heracles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19From Wikipedia: "The Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia, known colloquially as the Yak Killer hornet), the world's largest wasp, is a native of temperate and tropical Eastern Asia. Its body length is between 27 mm (1.1 inches) and 45 mm (1.8 inches), with a wingspan of about 76 mm (3 inches). Queens may reach a length of 55 mm (2.2 inches)." See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet

Native Japanese Honey Bees scare the ***** out of me now too. ;x - karel747, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw a special about these wasps on the National Geographic channel recently. It turns out that their venom actually dissolves human flesh. These things are insane.
- younglink11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.metacafe.com/watch/363391/hornets_vs_bees/
Wow. - LrdEclpse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Dear God, even the *bees* in Japan are Japanese!
- jarogers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5even better here are some interesting facts from the wiki.
Sting
The stinger of the Asian giant hornet is about a quarter-inch (6 mm) in length, and injects an especially potent venom that contains an enzyme so strong that it can dissolve human tissue. Masato Ono, an entomologist at Tamagawa University near Tokyo, described the sensation as feeling "like a hot nail being driven into my leg." [1].
If a person is stung by the giant hornet and does not receive prompt medical treatment, he or she may die from a reaction to the venom. About 40 people die each year after being stung by giant hornets, mainly as a result of an allergic reaction to the venom.
A couple of interesting notes on Vespa mandarinia's venom and stinger:
* The venom contains eight different chemicals, some of which dissolve flesh, some of which cause pain, and at least one which has an odor which attracts more hornets to the victim.
* The venom contains 5% acetylcholine, which stimulates the pain nerve fibres more than bee or other wasp venoms, so that it is a bit more painful.
* Vespa mandarinia uses its large crushing mandibles, rather than its sting, to kill prey.
* The venom of the Asian giant hornet is more toxic than most other bees or wasps, and has one of the greatest lethal capacities per colony
* Like all hornets, V. mandarinia possesses a barbless stinger, allowing it to sting repeatedly, as it does when preying on bees and other insects. - ac3boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh Man, Did anyone read the Wiki? Hornet sashimi!!! Horrible.

- Onikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Are they the same as these guys? http://www.metacafe.com/watch/206326/10_giant_japanese_hornets_vs_10_000_honey_bees/
- Onikun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2actually theres a better and longer video somewhere where you can see the jaws of one of those things cutting a bee in half but I can't find it. Maybe someone else can
- Tito151, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v23GFc0KG4c
Hornet bites the honey bee in half near the beginning somewhere. - blueracer6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Tito151
The hornet bites the bee in half at 1:22 - gchucky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not really sure, but they might be. The ones in that video are called suzumebachi, which redirects on the English Wikipedia to the article on the Asian giant hornet. Searching in Japanese, though, yields a different article ( http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BA%E3%83%A1%E3%83%90%E3%83%81 if you're interested, but it's in Japanese). Either way, seeing this thing in real life (as I have) is scary as hell.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Onikun
Yes, they are - scheper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are the same, and those were European honey bees. Japanese honey bees defend themselves by throwing themselves onto the hornet and vibrating their bodies until the hornet dies from overheating.

- thok47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They are real and National Geographic has a great show on them called "Hornets from Hell".
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/10/1025_021025_GiantHornets.html- Tito151, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do they do these shows so conveniently? Do they have hidden cameras stalking a bee hive forever or do they accelerate an attack by releasing these captured hornets near the nest, letting nature take it's course regardless? What about the extreme close-ups or 'Bees-eye-view' shots? Are they using micro cameras or what!?
- budshonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always wondered how those shows are filmed as well! They should show us damnit!
- knid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Real or fake, I literally shuddered when I saw that pic.
- loganhuddleston, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21yeah ***** that.
- tipsqueal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No joke, I saw one of those in my backyard. While trying to kill/capture it so I could get a closer look it burrowed itself in the flower bed.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41I saw one once. It held me at gun point, stole my wallet and then kicked me in the shins before flying off.

- Lamtd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just hope for the guy who took the pic that the camera flash didn't make the wasp angry... that's gotta hurt pretty badly :-/
- mewhocorrupts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The wikipedia page states that the venom, in fact, causes necrosis, and will rot away human flesh. It's like a flying brown recluse, or my mother in law.
- zulan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wasn't the exact same image on Digg a couple of months ago? I saw a documentary on TV about these and I remember that there was some other type of bees that had a defense against them. The bees surrounded the wasp and did something like vibrating or something so that they generated a lot heat and the bees could take the heat but it was to much for the wasp that fell dead to the ground.
