- faithhealer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+77And whatever you do, don't get caught with aluminum tubing!
- ryodoan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+75These are the things that make me depressed to be an American.
I believe in the constitution. I do not believe in our current government. - nova912, on 10/11/2007, -2/+67ALUMINUM TUBES!, do I need to tell you what the ***** you can do with an aluminum tube. ALUMINUM!!
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+54Or model airplanes, aka terror drones.
- PhantomBantam, on 10/11/2007, -2/+45I just know my potato gun is going to end up with me going to jail. No, I don't point it at people or animals, but I'm sure because it has wires sticking out of it (it's pneumatic), some neighbor is going to report it as a bomb. Then they'll raid my house, find rocket engines (WMDs), and confirm that they saved America.
- retral, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41They'll never take my thermite!
well.. unless they ban rust and aluminum. - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38The rest of the world will move faster and America will become obsolete.
Those who rule technology rule the world. Always have done. - rthomas6, on 10/11/2007, -9/+41AMAZING!
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32Obviously, you never used DOS. This is the old style, from before color monitors existed.
- Skavenblight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31I think that at this point, massive riots against the government would actually be a positive development.
- sathishcj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30In Texas, you need to register the purchase of Erlenmeyer flasks or three-necked beakers. The same state where I do not have to register a handgun, forces me to register a glass beaker.
This is probably the most powerful statement in this post, and shows the complete idiocy of the system that we have put up in our country. Since when did glass breakers become more dangerous than handguns. - geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29You almost wouldn't believe it, but then he gives the link, and you see it's far worse than just flasks:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/criminal_law_enforcement/narcotics/pages/chemicalsapparatus.htm
(A) a condenser;
(B) a distilling apparatus;
(C) a vacuum drier;
(D) a three-neck or distilling flask;
(E) a tableting machine;
(F) an encapsulating machine;
(G) a filter, Buchner, or separatory funnel;
(H) an Erlenmeyer, two-neck, or single-neck flask;
(I) a round-bottom, Florence, thermometer, or filtering flask;
(J) a Soxhlet extractor;
(K) a transformer;
(L) a flask heater;
(M) a heating mantel; or
(N) an adaptor tube.
I'd be sent to prison for a lifetime if I moved to Texas. Some of that lab equipment is frankly vital to any experiment requiring separation or distillation of anything, and some of those chemicals are necessary precursors to a lot of compounds you need to do organic chemistry. The biggest joke on that entire list is "a transformer"; who _doesn't_ have one? - Fogdelune, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28Bingo. If we wage a war on science, we lose the war of science. With a good portion of our money being spent on the war, the science that could help win that war, and help the injured soldiers coming home has been cast aside.
How many Americans could be helped with stem cell research? - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28In the UK we have stem cell research. There was a guy last week who was one of the first to have his sight restored using it. That is amazing. If America doesn't do it somebody will. The Chinese are probably doing all sorts of *****. And when the time comes they will be that much ahead that you'll need to buy the tech from them. Thus given them the edge as a world power. It's pretty straight forward.
America has ruled the world since the end WW2 because they had far superior technology (nuclear). That will soon change. 60 years is a blip in history. Times move fast. - soccerman90, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Our American government is intent on moving backwards not fowards. They are trying to detroy reason and replace it with faith and religion. They want to keep us under their thumb as they rape us and the constitution
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -7/+33I agree with Jesus Gaytard.
Walk into any Wal-Mart and you'll see obese, spandex-clad rednecks fill their carts with pork rinds and Pepsi. - Sc0rned, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26Finally someone sticking up for the arm-chair chemists
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26"but I encourage him to cite the various claims made within his post"
All throughout the post he adds links to where you can find more information about what he's talking about. While it'd be great if he could go through and detail everything linking to media sources, journal articles and such, this is informal writing (a blog) and not formal writing (a journal article, a news article).
I personally found it to be fairly compelling and a very nice read. He states his case pretty clearly and gives at least some idea of where his points are coming from (unlike 98% of the cruft that gets dugg here). What's not to like? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28The bitch!
She blinded me with science!
But it was poetry in motion - otheruser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26@ryo
Heh, its pretty funny, our current government is the exact opposite.
They don't believe in the constitution. They do believe in themselves. - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28whiteboy: i agree that generalizing is bad, but judging by the people we elect to office he's not too far off base.
- phantasm10, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22I had a cool chemistry set as a kid. It came with stuff you probably wouldn't find in a high school chemistry class these days. After doing a few experiments and watching stuff fizz or change color, it become my mission to figure out how to make bombs with it. Sadly, or fortunately depending on you're point of view, I never succeeded.
- berb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20"One such raid was directed at the amazing online store United Nuclear. United Nuclear sells super powerful magnets, aerogel, lasers, chemicals, lab ware, and all sorts of other geeky goodness. The founders of United Nuclear were held at gun point, handcuffed, and had all of their computers and records confiscated."
Wow, I've bought stuff from them multiple times before. Never doing anything illegal or potentially dangerous, just hobbyist chemistry. This is terrible. - Renton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18As Maddox once said:
"I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision." - scaife7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18They'll never catch me with my transparent aluminum!... er, whales or something.
- cliffzdude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19The real reason why chemistry sets are now pussified: L.A.W.Y.E.R.S.
- digitalArtform, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It also suits big business to turn people who make and build into simple consumers
- daviddiaz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16It's true that America's government is run by morons, but please don't generalize like that about us. I for one am not overweight, uneducated, or racist, and neither are many people I know.
- blujay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14" I think that at this point, massive riots against the government would actually be a positive development. "
Apathy seems to be the desired result of restrictions to education. - Hananda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14"Like the country who who invented or at least where early adopters of the CPU, TV, Radio, Cell Phones, Novicane, MRI, oh, and electricty."
I think the saying "But what have you done for me lately?" applies here. The US has been responsible for countless technological innovations and massive change, but, the point of the article is that these new anti-science equipment laws and regulations will slow our rate of technological advancement.
Agree with the rest of your post, though. Generalizations based on nationality are effectively the same as generalizations based on race. It wouldn't be acceptable for me to make a claim like "The Irish are nothing but a bunch of red-headed, infighting drunks.", for example. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Gosh I do Chem all the time, coming from environmental science, the natural world is something to be studied! I have a home based Chem set and probably the odd chemical that could mebbe make a bomb, so and? Get over the terror crap! Its never going to happen to you and if it does consider all the 100+ lightening bolts you dodged to get there! For the love of.....you spend how many trillions on a war on invisible possibly non existent enemies yet 28,000 people every year will be victims of road trauma, trauma a few million would have prevented, get it?
- Tracon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16Or you could just be like the Romans and steal all of the tech instead. They were good engineers but not so great at science.
- blujay, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Don't worry about science. Other countries will carry on with it. The strength America has now is in it's amazing varieties of Christian Universities. America will never be surpassed in faith based reality.
Anyway, we had a good run for a young country. History will never deny us that. It was short, but, oh so sweet. - keysersoze1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12But...but science = Darwin and global warming, and that is not in our political agenda
- wburglett, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13whoever they are...
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Amazing... And just how will this effect schools and Colleges everywhere? This will put a strain on them. Will the schools and Colleges be told to frisk everyone before they leave the class? Homework? I can't believe the Government could do this to students. Growing up meant getting your fist chemistry set and trying to blow up your sisters favorite doll, or the neighbors mailbox. In school it was volcanoes, and seeing gory stuff project towards the ceiling. Who's will soar the highest... Gone are the good ole days.
- 3tcp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11if you're too dumb to right click the word with the red line under it your opinion is useless
- verstohlen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Another nail in the coffin of America's lead in science. This will ensure even less kids are exposed to and interested in science and consequently will not grow up to become scientists or even have rudimentary knowledge of science. Good going, geniuses. In the short term it may seem good to those clowns who are doing this, but in the long run, it will harm America. Guaranteed.
It's ***** like this that is pissing more and more Americans off. I read more and more stories like this every day that are no doubt infuriating many people. How long before it comes to a head? The future will be an interesting place. - rarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I wish more sites would use a black background.
- asdfasdf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7My former MIT professor: "People major in chemistry for one of two reasons, either to make drugs, or to make explosives. I wasn't into the latter."
I suggest this chemistry forum: http://www.sciencemadness.org/ It has SSL support and an overall bright and dedicated userbase. - chrisc262, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7yet another right taken away from americans...
in the name of keeping everyone "safe" - khyberkitsune, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@retral
Don't forget the barium used to make it burn even hotter! - DrawingTheSun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6most Americans are happy with what's on tv and will not do anything about their government doing this to your country because they don't need to , so nothing will change
- MrAnchovy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Here's one:
http://www.fireworksfoundation.org/actions.aspx - ianaaji, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8psg188:
Actually, that's being concerned about one problem at a time. Hypocrisy would be claiming to be against that type of system but supporting it. - ATHEISTinHELL, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@skavenblight
Taking to the streets. Americans can't be bothered to do that. Let the illegal immigrants do it. Like every other thing we don't like to do anymore. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The CPSC absolutely disgusts me. Why not ban humans? We contain sulfur and phosphorous and hydrogen.
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7
oh! And building a Nuclear reactor in your parent's car port? Yea, that's a no-no too - phantom113, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8@chris9902 I agree with you Chris, although the US has ALREADY fallen behind. Thank you very much Mr. Bush and company.
