- socialpyramid, on 06/13/2008, -0/+23I know this girl who lives in Brooklyn right by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and within a year she has developed asthma. Never had it before, not in her family. The price she has paid for living in hip Williamsburg apparently, which has one of the nation's highest rates of asthma.
- jonxblaze, on 06/13/2008, -0/+16Asthma is a very serious condition, my son had a mild asthma condition but it was scary whenever he had an asthma attack.
- gavinhudson, on 06/14/2008, -0/+15Here in South Korea, asthma nearly doubled from 1992 to 2002.
- inactive, on 06/13/2008, -0/+14this is fascinating and so scary.
- cledford, on 06/14/2008, -0/+10I recently moved (1 month ago) from a rural area of North Carolina to one of the largest cities in NC and my allergies/asthma has been kicking my ass ever since. Actually as I write this it's 4am and I can't sleep because of stupid allergies. Maybe if I put a spike strip out by the surrounding roads it will help? Does anyone have any experience with those air purifying machines? I am thinking about investing in one.
- sinatosk, on 06/14/2008, -1/+10good time to bring in electric cars I think :p
- xedd, on 06/14/2008, -0/+9I was just talking to someone about Korea and he said that his entire family had gotten pneumonia in the last two years. He thought the air was bad there due to the prevailing winds from China, blowing dust and LOTS of pollution.
- Nenb, on 06/14/2008, -0/+7Those are not mutually exclusive:
• Asthma due to pollution is caused by particulates NO:s and Volatile organic chemicals.
• Asthma due to cleanliness is due to too few microbes and human and animal tissue in the air to allow for a well developed bacterial culture that is good for the respiratory organs.
They were not a problem before modern civilization, neither the particulates, NO:s or VOC were present even 100 years ago. They can only be found very near large roads. But then again, if they were, they probably had more important things to worry about when even a moderate infection could prove to be fatal.
Rule of thumb: If it is bad for your respiratory organs; it might cause asthma. - birdcity, on 06/14/2008, -0/+7another reason not to live near a major road
- lacreme, on 06/14/2008, -0/+6yeah, these problems weren't really around before modern civilization. some people say it's because of cleanliness but this article suggests its because of pollution
- threon, on 06/14/2008, -0/+6Brake dust is really bad for your lungs too.
- mysedai, on 06/14/2008, -0/+5I was exactly the opposite of you. I grew up in south suburban Chicago in the 1980's (near the steelmills, yay!) and was really healthy and active. I moved to rural Tennessee and the clean country air kicked my ass. Within a year or moving here I developed severe asthma and allergies. I've had bronchitis more often than most people have had the common cold. Viva la pollution!
- nsundeepreddy, on 06/14/2008, -1/+6I dont like the sound of this. Does this mean soon enough we will be paying more health insurance for living near main roads?
They should get the motorists pay for that!! - elbekko, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4Cleanliness doesn't only have to do with a lack of bacteria, but also the chemicals used to kill these.
Many chemicals in cleaning products aren't very healthy. They may not be lethal, but they certainly won't make you better. - Mootabolife, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4I wonder if the highways cause the asthma, or whether they incite the slowly developing disease. A lot of children get asthma who are nowhere near big urban areas with lots of highways.
- alexforcefive, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I thought that too when I first read it, but then it's still important research. Now we have actual facts instead of common sense, we can deal with the issue appropriately. Hooray for science!
- DirtPile, on 06/14/2008, -1/+5This is true. I had mild exercise-induced asthma when I lived in the Philly suburbs, I moved to the Southside of Chicago and it turned into full-blown severe asthma. I hope it can be somewhat reversed if I live in a less polluted area.
- Nenb, on 06/14/2008, -0/+3That is grouped in the 'particulates' category in the article.
- catcher6250, on 06/14/2008, -0/+3Wow, the results of this experiment are shocking to the core!
- XtheXlanternX, on 06/14/2008, -1/+4hey 1995 called and they want their news back
- alexforcefive, on 06/14/2008, -3/+6Or you guys could just get a real healthcare system :p
- WilliamDavis, on 06/14/2008, -0/+3Seriously. People who have less pieces of paper are riddled with health problems. It must be that paper brings health. You're a genius.
- simg, on 06/14/2008, -0/+3yeah, removing lead from petrol. what a waste of time that was.
/sarcasm - alexforcefive, on 06/14/2008, -0/+3If you take any kind of antihistamine, your body will eventually become immune to it. Allergy medicine is for short-term use only.
I've read that the effectiveness of ionisers, air purifiers etc is pretty questionable, but it's worth a try anyway. There are some house plants which also allegedly clean the air, spider plants and stuff. - bridow, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2you must be in smoggy charlotte like myself. #9 most polluted city in the US!
- crypulse, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2It's the happening.
- mysedai, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2I hope that if I move back to the southside of Chicago (Chicago Hts!) from rural TN my asthma will be reversed...
- rootsm3, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2Oh so that's why I cough up blood all the time. Thanks Digg!
- 1337chic, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2Yes, lets all spread out all over our farm land so that we don't have any left instead of looking to find ways to make our cars pollute less.
- slimnickyy, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1Bloody duh! Excellent journalism.
- willowwolf, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1omg, it's a duh kind of thing. don't be so shocked.
- Vosona, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1I didn't know that your chances of asthma could increase by living near places with particles that contribute to asthma.
- govindprasad01, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1yes every where ,there is the same problem, too much of pollution , and ultimately we are spoiling our health with it,
this is what we are passing to the young generation. - TheRealMisterd, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Maybe it's the rubber dust caused but wear in the tires.
Nobody thinks about this.
Tires wear down but where does the rubber go? - SarahC, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Oh, so much fail. I can swim in it.
- banthis, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1Well no ***** Sherlock.
- j3ff86, on 06/14/2008, -1/+2Take benadryl? Suppresses allergies and makes you sleepy.
- Nintendesert, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1Munich? I thought Europe had some badass mass transit system.
- salinemist, on 06/14/2008, -2/+2And yet we're wasting trillions on reducing the amount of HARMLESS C02 in the atmosphere.
Follow the money in "Climate Change" and figure out who really cares about you and planet. - toody, on 12/16/2008, -0/+0i think this is human "KARMA" .

http://search.ashtech.info/health - goon5000, on 06/14/2008, -2/+1MOVE. If you're getting sick because of where youre living, YOURE LIVING IN THE WRONG PLACE! what the hell, if you're living next to a highway in a polluted city, you're probably paying more in rent than you would be paying for a mortgage out in the countryside. MOVE! What's so good about the city anyway?
- iignotus, on 06/14/2008, -2/+1I stopped reading and knwon.
- DAC1138, on 06/14/2008, -5/+3Yes, but remember: SMOKING causes asthma and cancer. Not cars.
I don't smoke, but I was taught an interesting point: You can leave a car running in the garage and the fumes will kill you within 2 hours. You can fill a garage with cigarette smoke and sit there as long as you want, they only thing you'll get it stinky. - HairyFotr, on 06/14/2008, -4/+1Do farticles also fall into that group?
