- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If they had shown how different the Chinese look from different parts of China itself, you might be surprised. The northern Chinese look very different from the western Chinese, and both look very different from the southern Chinese.
China itself has historically had five major ethnicities, the Han, the Mongols, the Manchus, the Hui, and the Tibetans (Though Tibet was not really part of China proper, nor was Mongolia nor Manchuria originally.)
(Beyond that, even the Han ethnicity has a whole mess of sub-ethnicities that got subsumed into it.) - milomind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Nazis had similar tests that they used to tell the racially pure from the untermensch. Now it's a fun website! Arbeit Macht Frei-for-all!!
- ILL_Robinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+310/18...
But then again, I can tell the difference between #FFFFFF and #FFFFFE. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2None of the folks in there "looked the same". They all looked very different. Telling people that they "all looked the same" because people can't guess nationality is stupid.
And in any case, *China, Korea, and Japan are not enough to constitute Asia.* Where the heck are the Indians, and the South East Asians? They do look significantly different. They may as well have asked you to differentiate between Germans, Swedes, and Danes and conclude that all europeans look the same.
Idiotic test, I say. Even more idiotic conclusion that "asians all look the same". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"smells of racism."
No, actually it points out how little we know about race and how stupid racism is. - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This "test" is about telling the difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
The reason this test exists is because of the expectations that asian-like people have when you meet them. All the ones I've met get really pissy at you if you mis-identify their region of origin. They act all indignant because we don't just know. How the HELL are we supposed to know?
That's what this test is about. It's telling them to shut the hell up.
Everyone on here keeps on saying things like, "yeah well we can't tell the difference between Americans!", and "What about the differences between European, American, and Germans?"
Well, let me explain something to you. We don't care. If you go into a room that has Americans, Germans, and Europeans, the issue just doesn't come up. And if it does, I've never seen anyone get all upset, expecting you to know. After all, we're all white. How could we expect you to know?
So get off your freaking high horses, you asian-like people. I don't have anything against you all. I'm just tired of being expected to know exactly where your from and treated like an idiot if I can't tell. - ozydingo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, as many have pointed out, this is old--I think I took this test something around 4 years ago. Yeah, i sucked at it (and I'm half chinese myself...though one's ability to distinguish these types of things is probblay a lot more related to growing up around them thereby learning the distinguishing features rather than genetics)
What I want to know is why the hell is this on Digg? And I quote: "Technology focused news site" (google "digg" if you want to know where that came from). Maybe i'm just not seeing something....
Ooooh, it's on the interwebs and it's the kewlest so i should post it on digg! Yay me! - thefurryone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm probably the only person who thinks it's an interesting experiment in physiognomy. There are extremely subtle differences in EVERYONE's faces based on genetic makeup. The thing is that this is based on ancestry and not on nationality. A friend of mine is of mixed-race ancestry, and at first glance it would be nearly impossible to identify his 'race'. Likewise, my own face is probably a huge mess to anyone trying to identify my ancestry just by looking (and my forebears came from two European countries!). To me, anyway, it's fascinating to notice the patterns and similarities within the ethnic groups. Socially it's worthless information because anything that distinguishes by race is automatically bad, regardless of the value or application of the knowledge, but information is information.
Incidentally, before anyone accuses me of promoting racism, I scored a 5. I said I was interested in being able to identify people, not that I was good at it. - milomind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If the test was: "What European Country is the White Guy From?", you wouldn't get much better results. I'm not digging this, not because I think it's racist. I'm not digging this because it's lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"chinkier eyes" - WTF? Tests like these make Baby Jesus cry.
- AdamWeeden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@bluthng
"Please get this southern-state white trash off of digg."
And while we're at it please keep your geographic prejudice to yourself. I live in the south, am not a racist, and have been around this country a few times. I have met just as many racists up north as I have down south. - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You may as well take a survey trying to tell the difference between German, French, and English people. It's pointless! What a dumb idea.. No digg.
- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh please, people get off your high horses. As a couple of commenters have mentioned previously, there *are* a number of Asian people (and I've met some) who get upset when Westerners can't tell where they're from simply by looking at them. This site helps prove that it's not so easy. I don't understand how people are calling it racist... To me, it would only be racist if it were playing on stereotypes or encouraging discrimination, which it doesn't seem to be doing. In fact, it's showing you that some visual stereotypes you may have held might not be true.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The reason this test exists is because of the expectations that asian-like people have when you meet them. 2 possible explanations:
1. A lot of Asian Americans are tired of being constantly asked where they come from because it casually implies that they're not truly American. There's a recent Time Magazine article on this.
2. Some mistakes can be offensive due to political and/or religious contexts, i.e. mistaking a Chinese woman for being Japanese (WW2's still a big deal for many). Imagine mistaking a Pakistani for an Indian, or an Arab for a Jew--expect fireworks.
/me is Asian American and doesn't care either way. - sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kinda got the same racist feeling and it's kinda weird what stereotypes exist.
Bluthng I agree this really doesn't belong on digg, however I would have to say you have your own stereotypes to deal with with your "southern-state white trash" comment... - farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I call ***** on everyone who calls "racism" on this.
Saying somthing as ***** ignorant as that proves your are an ignorant *****. - ohfivepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1racist
- JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3First, as mockstar points out, this is old.
Secondly, though, this test makes me feel quite uncomfortable. It's one thing to say that people should make more of an effort to distinguish individuals within a particular ethnic group, rather than saying, "Oh, all these [insert ethnicity here] people look the same to me".
But to say that people should start to invest time and effort in analysing the distinguishes racial characteristics of people from different, but proximate, ethnicities - "Is the shape of that eyelid more Chinese than Japanese? Or perhaps Korean?" - smacks of the sort of thing that used to on in Third Reich primary schools. Would we feel quite as comfortable with an online "Spot the Jew" quiz? - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of the first place I ever went to for Sushi. It was run by a Korean man named Mr. Kim (yeah, there's a rare name...). Anyway when I asked him why a Korean guy would run a Japanese restaurant, he just said "Why does it matter? All you Americans can't tell the difference anyway." I think he was on to something...
This site just goes to prove that race has most everything to do with arbitrary boundaries and culture and very little to do with biology or genetics. - huglmnstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm half korean & couldn't tell the difference! 3/18
- primitive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah... most ethnicities that live in close concentration in one region look similar. kind of like how northern europeans look similar, west africans look similar, and like south americans look similar. but i get the feeling that this post was trying to be negative about asians.
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1primitive,
"yeah... most ethnicities that live in close concentration in one region look similar. kind of like how northern europeans look similar, west africans look similar, and like south americans look similar. but i get the feeling that this post was trying to be NEGATIVE ABOUT ASIANS."
YEAH. I BACK YOU.
REPORT "mrfollicle" - garg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Stupid test. Thats like saying all indians, pakistanis and bangladeshi people look the same. Or all northern states americans look the same. Or all people from Nigeria, Ghana, and Zambia look the same.
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And most white people looks more or less the same too, as far as trying to tell teh what's in thier blood anyhow. This is kinda retarded.
- lildude3077, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm Vietnamese and had no earthly clue. 8/18
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I took this test a loooooooong time ago... and failed miserably. I think it's rigged. That is, the folks are not a random sampling, but picked intentionally to trick the test taker. Differences are subtle, but they are there, somewhat, kinda.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does the name field have to be a unique identifier? Thats a poor database design or security method.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You've been trained by society to jump on people who identify racial trends as a "racist". You've been trained by society to jump on people who don't like hanging out with gay people as "homophobes".
It's pathetic, really. People are entitled to their own thoughts.
we could make it even more absurd and call you a racist-aphobe.'
Just one problem young man, this is a public web site. Whether it is rascist or not IT HAS THE POTENTIAL to incite rascism THAt is serious. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, so how about if they tried this with black people (or even strictly African blacks), and asked them to tell who's from Ghana, and who's from Nigeria? How many of them would be able to tell the nationalities of various black African people apart? (. . . though I make an exception for Ethiopians and Eretrians; I can tell them apart because they have a different facial structure than other black Africans, and are usually somewhat lighter.)
I don't even think most folks would be able to differentiate Swedes from Norwegians from Germans from from English from Poles etc. very well. Most Middle easterners would probably not be able to differentiate themselves apart by nationality either.
To say that "they all look the same" is demeaning. Individuals can be differentiated; nationality isn't easy to differentiate no matter what race you are. - sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The original post pisses me off. How did the website site go from a light hearted tongue in cheek experiment to some sort of concrete evidence that "all those asians look the same"?
If you agree, please help me get this garbage off the front pages. - Scheissen, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1I'd hate to look like that.
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1alright I skipped the last 20 or so comments so this might have been covered already.
You can't compare the Asian races looking similiar to people in America looking similar. A.) The nation of America is very young and people in Maine have not had the centuries to evolve differently from the people in Florida. B.) The average american is a mutt. The subjects of this test are presumably native to their country with native parents (if they aren't then this test is retarded).
Ok, I;m tired, I'm going to take a nap under my desk. Good day - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@screensnot: (Quote)
Quite often though, Asian people seem disgusted with me when I can't tell their nationality just by looking at them. Why is that?
_________________________________________
The reason is pride. Everyone wants to think they're 'uniquer' than the other groups, which all look the same. What? You can't tell? - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"EVERYONE has the same genes in them and could very well have the same physical traits as a person of another "race"."
uh not really man. To a point you are right, but with my danish mother and my dutch father, I could never be born with the same skin pigmentation as a kid from Africa (unless I'm some medical marvel) - webleed4real, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg. The site is slow as *****. The people make retarded faces. And they left out Filipinos, those *****! That puts their credibility all to hell.
- Beautyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why Spielberg/Chicago Man cast a movie about Japanese Geisha with all Chinese actors - according to this unscientific site, no one can tell the difference, yet everyone in 'Asia' is all heated up about it.
- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I was asian and I was persecuted by americans, and I said, "Stop being mean to me, you white people!"... You could call me racist for using the term "white people". But that wouldn't accomplish anything, now would it?
You've been trained by society to jump on people who identify racial trends as a "racist". You've been trained by society to jump on people who don't like hanging out with gay people as "homophobes".
It's pathetic, really. People are entitled to their own thoughts.
we could make it even more absurd and call you a racist-aphobe. - heyidiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't judge people by the color of thier skins, but by the size of their nostrils..."
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"When you think of a canadian, what is the mental image that pops into your head? Now, think of a muslim.
Now stop. I guarantee that you pulled both of those images from different stereotypes in your head. Sure, they may not be identical to the stereotypes that are in my head. But they *are* stereotypes. Does that make you a racist?"
No only once you begin saying/thinking one race is more SUPERIOR to another (namely your own race).
Racist; a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others - mpeng168, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WASPS look the same driving their pick up trucks, drinking beer, blah blah blah....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Killerah
If you don't think the "chinaman" caricature and "alllooksame" T-shirts can incite racism, you have serious problems. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Yeah, but if he did that, this guy would a) use only German, French, and British residents of New York City with summer tans"
In the case of Germans and English, you mean 'summer burns' ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is stupid and raciest.
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and before you diggers start firing back at me, I would like to stress that I am only BACKING UP primitive's thought. =). I kinda feel the same.
- worlok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know if they use the same people (examples) at the same numbers each time, but the girl in number 6 slot for my test is a hottie.
It's also my opinion that the most beautiful people are a mixture of many races - Euro, African, Asian features, mixed the right way, can yield a very beautiful looking person. That's not to say that you don't get beautiful people who are of one racial background, but I find the right "mix" very appealing visually. I'm of Euro ancestry, though.
For the record I thought I could tell the difference but I only got a "6". - fuerion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got 7. Got more Japanese right than any of the others.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am "white" and I got 9/18, "You are OK" .. maybe because I have af few CJK friends?
- Lostangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This website is rediculously old... how is this JUST now coming on Digg? I remember going to this site back in 1998.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got ten 10 of 18. My biggest goofs were on the Chinese side. I did not mistake any Koreans for Japanese or vice versa, my confussions were with thinking members of the above two groups were Chinese and vice versa...
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm pretty good at telling Asians apart if I know their last name, though."
Well. aren't you the clever one.
