- Dispersion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Absinthe: The Drink of People Trying to Sound Cool.
It's alcohol. It gets you drunk. Get over it. - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i love absinthe and make it my self because, its legal that way plus its cheaper and stronger than anything you can order from europe. http://www.absinthekits.org/ has kits that you add to wine and ever clear to make the strong stuff
- carpe_diem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I’ve seen people setting fire to sugar soaked in absinthe - is that traditional?
No! The French certainly never did this in the 19th century otherwise there would not be any cafés left standing in Paris! Can you imagine the results of several thousand Frenchmen setting fire to their drinks after a session on absinthe?
This 'ritual' was created as a marketing stunt in the 1990's and has unfortunately been accepted by many as an historical fact. It does not increase any 'absinthe effects' and only serves to add an unpleasant burnt caramel taste to your drink!
-- From the website in the third post.... - Bindibadgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Absinthe: the drink of drinkers who havent yet resorted to buying meth." You might as well drink pure ethanol/methanol. :/
- Slourte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg! Great article and comments also
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Absinthe does a lot more than just get you drunk. The first time I had it, I was flipping out"
Absinthe dosent actually cause anything much more than being drunk. if you flipped out you were just tricking your self. the whole worm wood makes you trip or go crazy thing is a rumor - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absinthe is legal in Canada, well in the province I am in.
Very little if any of the psychoactive chemical (thujone) present in wormwood make it into the final product. If it 'feels different' to you it is likely just a psychological effect. - Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll digg this story. I'm a big fan of Absinthe, and I've never had anything better than the Nouvelle-Orléans. It is a great feeling, you can drink and feel drunk, but still be clear headed to get your work done.
- neutralparty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you wanna try some and are willing to pay the shipping, this site is a great resource. http://www.alandia.de All orders ship from Germany, cuz you can't get the real stuff in the US
- HuRyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Several Mfgrs. label a product as Absinthe but it has no wormwood in it. Fake Absinthe and people drink it and your right, no different than being drunk. Get the real deal and make your own kit. It's a whole different world.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i tried some unofficial brand here in canada (hills absinth) it was actually pretty good and you do get a different type of drunk off it. And if your a beer drinker trying this stuff 2 shots is avg and 3 shots will totally wreck you. If your a vodka drinker id set the limit at 4 within the 1st 2-4 hours and then 1/hour at most after if you feel the need (not likely).
The preperation is very cool but im not sure what this 'absinth effect' is supposed to be. I guess Ill have to wait until I travel to europe one day. - iamtheshow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Cool, I just picked up a bunch of this in Guild Wars ( http://www.guildwars.com ) last night and had no idea what it was. Now I know."
lol, same here. after like 3 shots of the stuff the graphics completely go crazy. - joeyjambalaya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's interesting to see a scientific approach to the contents of absinthe as it does have a lots of myths surrounding it.
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A nicely written article.
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, excellent article. I'm really glad you posted it, digg++
- docbaily, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article. Now I'm interested in trying some of this stuff out myself.
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is that movie where they all go to Europe... "Euro Trip"? They have the Green Fairy chilling with them when they drink it.
Only thing I know about it is from Hollywood. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've only had absinthe once, and it was a bit of a letdown. It basically turned a room of 5 guys into slobbering, docile, and eventually slumbering idiots. I suppose this effect would be lessened over time - the body would adapt to it (like any other drug). Personally I found it an interesting experience, but not something I'd like to indulge in frequently.
Damn absinthe. - ThomasNewman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ bluehouse: It has been on the newstands in magazine form for a WEEK. Probably on the website for just as long or more.
- djdevnull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I make my own.. Oh boy I love that stuff!
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Absinthe: the drink of drinkers who havent yet resorted to buying meth."
Well, if you'll read the article it says that the psychoactive incredient thujone is found in quantities that are orders of magnitude smaller than was previously thought, in almost 'homeopathic quantities'. Food for thought.l - lockdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, I just picked up a bunch of this in Guild Wars ( http://www.guildwars.com ) last night and had no idea what it was. Now I know.
- IronicMoustache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are several different grades of Absinthe out there. The ones being sold in Canada and UK have a lower thujone content (export level). For closer to the true thing, buy some of the potent stuff being sold *within* the Czech Republic... Hill's Absinth is like mouthwash, but there are a few decent ones there.
- ^^^^, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the stuff.
Doesn’t get you high in anyway but it is definitely a different type of drunk. I would say a much clearer feeling than drinking beer or other spirits. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've drank a decent amount of Absinthe in the last year (I was Europe this summer) and I love the stuff. The thing to keep in mind is you probably won't feel much beyond just the normal effects of alcohol. I always got drunk before I felt any effect from the wormwood. To test this theory, a friend and I finished a half bottle of abinsthe together one time (that is ~5 shots of 140 proof liquor each). We were drunk, but not "high."
Absinthe is a fun drink though. Anything that involves a whole procedure, including fire, is awesome in my book. The way i was taught to drink it is to get a spoon, place sugar in it, dip it in the absinthe, light it on fire, wait until the sugar starts bubbling, blow the fire out, pour the liquid sugar into the absinthe, stir, and shoot. Absinthe also has the coolness factor (although everyone in Europe just thought I was crazy because the stuff is so harsh). - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I second the thing about drinking this for Diggnation. Looks like it will be on the show, why not drink it?
- ThomasNewman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this news? It was an article in Wired adn has been on the stands for a week. I bet a decent ammount of people read the magazine anyway. How many times are Wired magazine articles copied to the website going to be digs?
- cryogenic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the movie EuroTrip kind of brought back the notion that Absinthe makes you flip out and hallucinate. Obviously the writers of the movie didn't do much research and now a bunch of my friends were dying to try the stuff after seeing the movie. I had to explain to them that Absinthe is nothing like that at all.
- djkayden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK.There are alot of Articles on this topic
My name is Mike I am an Agent for the ATF Second Quarter Division or to you civilians the Illegal Substance Task Force
I have had many run ins with Absinthe,I must say it is my favorite drink,I like the fact that it is Green and all the history it has behind it.
You can easily Hallucinate(Apologies for spelling,Long night) it's not just the extract from the Wormwood but also the Armenia,Anise and Fennel mixed with the percentage of Alch% Level that makes for what we here in the Field call a small "Mushroom Trip" but very Small,it is so small that it is distinguished as a drunk, but given the right type of person,it can be used as a placebo and the person can experience up to a 4 hour trip.
There so many diff rent types of Absinthe and if you have not gone to Denmark than chances are you will not have the full force of the Green Fairy.
Take it from me someone who has been in the line of work and from someone who has had the real Green Fairy in Eastern Amsterdam, the Black Bottle they called it,when it comes out it is glowing green..I think it was 185% Ashil Level,Serious stuff..You will get less the effect, way less as a matter of fact due to the fact that everything shipped from Europe is also Distilled...Anything is possible with the human mind..So any of you wanting the same thing as Euro trip,Go to Amsterdam,You want to try Absinthe and try all of there types and sooner or later "Trip" go ahead because nothing is impossible..
Nice post though,I digg it - comat0se, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Wikipedia, of course, say "It is now believed that it antagonizes inhibition >in the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor system.", but that's hardly >scientific proof.... Are you sure you can handle "scientific studies" because it kind of seems that the whole search engine thing is out of your league...

I can't think if anything more boring than racing fscking bulldozers... unless the racetrack runs through a suburban, cookie cutter housing project or through, say, a virgin rain forest. Besides, the big cats (DC9 and up) pretty much race themselves... those who've been on one will know what the fsck I'm talking about... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> psychoactive chemical (thujone) present in
> wormwood
Since this guy really hasn't bothered to explain the brain chemistry that might make thujone psychotropic (beyond, say, the effects that profound deprivation such as severe dehydration or starvation might induce), you'll pardon me if I view the whole Absinthe thing with a bit of skepticism. Wikipedia, of course, say "It is now believed that it antagonizes inhibition in the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor system.", but that's hardly scientific proof.... I especially like the fact that they don't quote any scientific studies to back that statement up.
Beyond that, the whole kidney failure and liver toxicity thing is a pretty big turn off for armature batches that might be a little heavy on the thujone.
Might as well just smoke a little pot with it and even the ride out (if there is any "ride" to be had). - pennywisdom2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When he was 14, he figured out how to hot-wire bulldozers left overnight at construction sites; he and his friends would stage races."
Pirates of Silicon Valley anyone? - CheeseIsGood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is an episode on the Thirsty Traveler where the host tours Ted Breaux's absinthe production. It recently aired on the Fine Living network and the website for the episode is available here:
http://www.fineliving.com/fine/thirsty_traveler/episode/0,1663,FINE_10176_35584,00.html - deathBOB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool story!
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, i would really like to try the stuff, but I am not sure if i trust those websites....
- jon_buddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it does give you a similar feeling of drunk, but, wormwood does not make you tired like alcohol. Not that it keeps you up, but you will outlast your friends :)
- EliGottlieb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, another thing to get me drunk. Meh.
- AndFrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absinthe is a bit more compelling than other liquers. The first thing that strikes you when you drink it is that it evaporates right in the back of your mouth, and you get a pleasent herbal/licorice taste. Breaux's right about mixing it with warm water, it taste terrible (though I would hardly compare its flavor to that of "donkey piss")
- Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yum. I want some now.
- history1me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I did straight shots of it... three! The burn is quite unique... to say the least. But Prague became alive that night.
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fu Manchu say:
"Absinthe
Maketh the heart
Grow fonder"
digg+ - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL Id like to see them try to down this especially after Alex's story about getting buzzed off 1 shot of tequila and then drinking a load. And now being unable to tolerate it.
MIX THE ABSINTH WITH WATER. I did 2 shots (straight up) and my god what a burn. - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh HELLLLLL! Just sliced my ear off. Thanks.
- absintheur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article.. Ted Breaux is my hero.
Anyone on here saying they make their own absinthe is an ill-informed fool. Absinthe is a distilled product. If you don't have a proper distillery, then you're making "absinth" like the Czech crap they sell today that markets on "thujone" and promises of getting layed by exotic chicks.
There's a big difference between "absinth" and absinthe. (Toulouse Lautrec is the only absinthe coming out of the Czech Republic that is halfway faithful to a good vintage absinthe).
There are very few sources to get "real" absinthe. I have my stuff imported from Germany from this place: http://tinyurl.com/9nmn8 (I shortened the URL). They have some courier specials on the Swiss and French stuff which are great and my orders have always gotten to my door (upstate NY) in 3-6 days.
My favorites are the Austrian Montmartre 68, Swiss Kubler 53 and the Swiss Clandestines. Some even prefer them over Ted Breaux's creations mentioned in the article which you can get from absintheonline.com. Try some real absinthe and you'll understand why most products labeled "absinth" are so inferior.
There's just too much crap information/marketing hype about absinthe out there, and for that reason Ted Breaux rules. Go Ted! - matsiescruff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i swear, this was on digg over the summer...
- aTriangulumRoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would be cool if they drank this on diggnation
- sobrien140, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Latest episode of Diggnation had a discussion of absinthe, sounds like they hadn't read the Wired article.
- chickmagnet869, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0never tried absinthe...but after researching, there's dozens of flavors and alcohol percentages. as cliché as it sounds, i'd like to experience an effect similar to the one presented on euro trip. what's a good basic flavor of absinthe you would reccommend to a first-time buyer?
- detuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive been dying to try this *****. came across this website selling it last night, $60 for the cheapest bottle.
