I think way more than 20 pics are needed to cover the history of Helicopters - xike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7No Blackhawk, Whitehawk, or Nighthawk? Sad day...

A *monster* of a helicopter [Picture] - wisam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6You can't talk about history of Helicopters without mentioning the "father of Helicopters"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Sikorsky - consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Pfft, they're awesome, Jumping out of them is more fun that riding in them, I can attest to that! :)
- mickstephenson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't waste your breath, if its British none of the digg community will pay any notice, even digg you down for your efforts. I mean they they cry why no Blackhawk, well probably because the Blackhawk is very run of the mill, Isn't the fastest helicopter in the world and is not one of the few helicopters that can do a loop the loop. But Americans have used it alot in war so therefore it deserves to be up there with the innovative helicopters in this list.
- JasonDelta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Was anyone else annoyed that the link for Next kept moving for every picture in the slideshow? I absolutely cannot stand it when web designers do this...why do I have to hunt for the Next button every single time??? Gah...
- trev0006, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Simply amazing pictures, its hard to belive how much the technology has progressed in the last 100 years and keeps on accelerating faster and faster. Even in the automotive industry it is mind boggling. http://www.dpccars.com
- Freakboy380, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2no little nelly
- MikeWanDo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH-64_Apache Wasn't good enough to make it onto the list?
- endlessoul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3What, no Airwolf?
http://imdb.com/title/tt0086662/ - Gigabutt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I kinda felt let down by that too... sticking the Mi-24 in there but not the technologically superior Comanche? for shame...
- thekronz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If the apache can make it into Grand Theft Auto, it can make it into this list.
- SuperSloth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3GET TO THE CHAPPA!!!
- kunradish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1agreed need a apache longbow it pretty mush the most advanced weapons platform out there.
- jazstaR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1ASIF NO BLACKHAWK !?!?!?!
- dickyfern, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The UH-60 Blackhawk really needed to be included in this list. It is the single most important helicopter since the Huey it replaced. Can you name another aircraft that is flown by the Army, Navy, Airforce and Coast Guard?
- jehoesefat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Perhaps they were spotlighting innovation.
- Glen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There should at least have been a mention of the Lynx: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Lynx
AFAIK it's still the fastest helicopter in widespread use by a lot of services across the world. I grew up near the army air corps outside of middle wallop in southern England and saw them all the time both on their own and in formation. From what I recall of a discovery channel helicopter special they have a special rotor blade tip enabling the blades to spin faster which along with the speed give them a higher pitched sound. - ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1In referring to a Sikorsky YR-4B/HNS-1 sits in a wind tunnel...."The essence of this design, like that of PV-2 from Piasecki--a large main rotor and a small vertical tail rotor (just one of each)--has been the guiding force for most modern helicopters." I've never heard of Frank Piasecki, and it seems to imply he invent the layout for the helicopter as we know it...instead of Igor Sikorsky, who "borrowed" main rotor plus the small stabilizing rotor in the rear, design.....

- Lunarbunny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Don't know why they say it's called the Utsky, appears to me to be the Mil Mi-26 Halo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mil_Mi-26 - naio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Learn once for all:
THE FIRST FLIGHT WAS PERFORMED BY SANTOS DUMONT.
'Nuff said.
And buried as inaccurate. - KiloCharley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, to be honest, i also thought about da Vinci, he must be slamming his fists. (figurativley)
Given time and a little more tech. who knows? - thekronz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/3/37/20070113195808!Leonardo_da_Vinci_helicopter.jpg
- KiloCharley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1 It is interesting that the first picture shares the same twin rotor design as the Chinook.
Also, for fixed wing aircraft, the Wright Bros. 'canard wing' and pusher props, is a design proven to be more efficient.
Some people seem to be 'ahead of the times'. - daveyoung, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Add to the list of should've been mentioned.. http://moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?object_id=2234
- umilmi81, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0They were missing airwolf too.

http://www.richard-seaman.com/Aircraft/AirShows/Maks2005/Highlights/Ka50TopView1oClock.jpg - 1337Einstein, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1A roflcopter as #21 really would have been the perfect punchline, but perhaps a bit out of character for the purpose of the gallery
