  • wishninja, on 07/08/2008, -1/+11I think a baby's scream is geared to create pain in the parent. No, there is never any magic when there is screaming. It's really a call to control the situation and your helplessness is what makes you so angry.

    Now I have to laugh when others baby is screaming because I know baby is not only screaming in the store but surely baby will also scream all the way home. So just think you are getting off light. But if you tiptoed around every screaming situation you would never get anything accomplished.

I guess there must be some magical thing when it is your own kid, but when I hear babies screaming in public, my instinctual reaction is to want to violently smother the creature to get it to stop. Obviously, I have my instincts very well controlled, but I couldn't imagine how some redneck idiot with four children handles theirs.

  • DrJG, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2A baby's smile is incredibly capable of making one feel good, as is a baby's eye -contact and recognition of you, reaching out to you, throwing itself at you - and most of all stopping crying and calming down and feeling reassured because of you. As for a baby's crying the little one only needs something, most likely to be away from the places adults are at, with noise and pollution or too much air pressure to bear for the little ears (in planes), and so on. And if there is anything decent about a grown up adult a baby crying merely brings a concern and a response of heart from you.
