- ScionAltera, on 11/20/2008, -19/+85Buried for the "2" in the headline.
- lovemorgul, on 11/20/2008, -0/+28The Earth's magnetic field protects spacecraft in low-Earth orbits..
- eco57, on 11/20/2008, -0/+25I love how science fiction so frequently presages scientific advances.
- roxgod666, on 11/21/2008, -1/+25He could have gotten rid of "A"
- JSatt, on 11/21/2008, -0/+20Would it also keep tool kits from floating away?
- theantirobot, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14wow, they've discovered magnets?
- viserov, on 11/21/2008, -4/+16Shields up, red alert!
Engage!
Captain's Log, Supplemental.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise. - seantubridy, on 11/21/2008, -1/+10Actually, they were just called shields for most of the episodes of all the series. The deflector was something different; it was used to deflect matter in front of the ship.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to my date with 3 supermodels. - LeviTheSmith, on 11/21/2008, -2/+11maybe there's a character limit so instead of putting "to" he put "2"
- L0NER, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8cool, now we need a replicator in every house.
- BossKey, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6This is the version you want, though. Deflector Shield 1.0 had...problems.
- alappat1, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7except star trek shields were not based on magnetic fields... i think... The shield being proposed here isn't some concrete "wall of force" hanging outside the spacecreaft, but a maginetic field(s) encompassing the entire spacecraft and a lot of surrounding space.
- wbeavis, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6You lose a couple fingers in shop class?
- maino82, on 11/21/2008, -3/+9you forgot
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!! - jackkerouac, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5... and Mr. Crazy makes an appearance. Hello, Mr. Crazy!
- N256, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4"It injected approximately one trillion megatons of energy into the Martian mantle"
Energy is not a unit of energy. - nomadspartan, on 11/21/2008, -3/+7Yes there's a character limit, that's why i put a 2 to imply the word 'to'.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3They're referring to the a system that deflects radiation and small(er) particles that would tear a ship to shreds at high speeds, not shielding to protect a ship from weaponry.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2008, -6/+9Buried for nitpicking.
- jordanisj, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3And now I've buried /you/ for inaccuracy. The navigational deflectors are similar to what they describe, so they use the term 'deflector shield' more or less correctly. If they'd just said 'shield' they would be getting their terms wrong.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2My fridge has been space ready for years!
- justjoehere, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Star Trek's deflector also deflected smaller, but still deadly particles. The experimenter's field would only work on particles; not molecules.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2good one
- klowngoblin, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3start trek has both "Regular Sheilds" and "Navigational Sheilds"
according to them the navigational sheilds run 24/7 and thats what they are trying to make for a real space craft, in the "Enterprise" series they had navigational shelds (thats what the small dish was on the front of the saucer section was) but not sheilds that protected them from weapons, instead they polarized their hull.
also we should be waiting for structural integrity fields where force fields are ran through hull plating to make them 100x stronger.
its funny how almost all of the startrek technology is coming true, there was an anti-matter page on digg not to long ago.
flip phones?
particle weapons?
PADD? = PDA - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3I always thought the description was there to elaborate on a headline...
Title: "Real-Life ‘Star Trek’ Deflector Shield"
Description: A new study found that a portable magnetic shield could be the key to protecting spacefarers during long-duration missions. - ASSASSYN360, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Not entirely during very powerful solar storms. Airline pilots are diverted during storm surges to avoid electronic interference.
- jordanisj, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Which is sort of what this does. It's just not as powerful as the deflector on the Enterprise. Nor as versatile, naturally.
- matthekc, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Well ladies and gentleman, the prospect of space travel just became a little more real. This was one of the major hurdles that prevented humans from visiting even near places like mars. With a recent antimatter reaction in the news and the Europeans working on controlled fusion I'm cautiously optimistic I might see some real space travel in my life.
- ozydingo, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1No, it's not. The 2, that is.
- gctoinfinity, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1"artistic depiction surrounding the Starship Enterprise"....... baaaahahahahahha. what an artist. good taste tho.
- LiquidIse, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2You don't get out much do you
- twinklyJesus, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Dude, the election's over...give it a rest.
- shadowblade989, on 11/21/2008, -3/+4Buried for inaccuracy.
"...a deflector shield surrounded the Starship Enterprise..."
The deflector shield is a particle stream projected in front of the ship which protects it from relatively accelerated bits of matter in space. The shield (what they describe) is for defending against weapons and large hazards. - Velnich, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I could have sworn the deflector shield was for clearing a path through space debris while traveling, no?
- JoeJoeMa, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12? what is this Sh*t
- zookee, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Are you really surprised that a magnetic field can protect you against harmful radiation? That is how the earth works and we are all still alive.
- ASSASSYN360, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1This technology could also be applied to high flying passenger aircraft and satellites. Solar storms affect us here on and just above earth.
- Zaggynl, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Magnetic bubble! Red Alert!
- dbsanfte, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1They're just putting a magnet in the ship. Put a magnet in front of your CRT TV sometime, it deflects the electrons in the tube, creating a dark spot. That's all this is.
- TheOneTrueGod, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1That would be the ultimate reward-device for games.
- InsaneOni, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1No, your right, but Megatons are a unit (in reference to TNT). Putting "of energy" after it is just redundant. This is how nuclear bombs and other high energy events are measured.
- new2theratrace, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1zomG! NERDgasm.
heh heh ::snort:: - lazerflesh, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Wow, I thought that we stopped listening to nerd stereotypes in the mid nineties.
I approve of this. It will help us go where we haven't gone before. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1/sarc
- tsunamitreats, on 11/21/2008, -0/+11. Read first post with any diggs
2. Use that idea (2 in the title? 2 in my pants!)
3. ???
4. Get dugg down. - Recoil, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2"...2 Protect Astronaut"... what, you think you're Prince or something?
- renatops, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0looool.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0someone beat you to it
- jasoj2, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1Maybe you're being 2 critical. :)
