- kcasper, on 03/05/2009, -0/+15Anyone here not running FightAIDS@home?
http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/ - billessig, on 03/06/2009, -0/+14And then there are those who are unfortunate enough to have contracted HIV in other manner, like blood-blood contact in dire situations, and those that were born with it because their parents made a stupid decision...
- SuperStromboli, on 03/06/2009, -2/+16It's called a condom.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+14I remember 15 years ago, when AIDS was going to kill all of us if we didn't find a cure. Trillions of dollars later were still just kind of tinkering with it.
- xsecretfiles, on 03/06/2009, -0/+11We should all stop having sex :)
I'm doing my part since ....3 years ago - waleedo, on 03/06/2009, -1/+12Wanna stop HIV? Stop watching MTV.
- mpn401, on 03/06/2009, -0/+9Ladies and gentlemen, Digg cures AIDS again!!
- atomicpoet, on 03/05/2009, -2/+10Use goalie pads?
- jennyvan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7Wow...you should apply for some grant money from the stimulus to fund your own AIDS research team. That's some groundbreaking stuff you got there.
- sickbag69, on 03/06/2009, -1/+7Yes, great idea. Cos everyone who has sex before marriage gets AIDS!!
- gametavern, on 03/06/2009, -3/+9Don't have sex with Aids patients?
- Terasiel, on 03/06/2009, -1/+6HOLY *****! Now I get it!
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4"Instead of aiming at the virus itself, they're focusing on the body's response to HIV's initial attack. By muting distress signals sent by HIV's first cellular victims, researchers hope to prevent the white blood cells on which HIV preys from responding and becoming infected themselves."
In theory that makes a lot of sense, hope it works. - dsmx, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4A genius idea except that the catholic church thinks they are immoral and has banned there use. Thus condemming thousands of people to death in a horrible way.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4The active ingredient has been known since 1982 to have antiviral activity. I'm not sure about the anti-inflammation hypothesis, as it is likely to have inactivated the virus, like Shattock said in the article. Still, it is great to see it being studied like this.
- SuperStromboli, on 03/06/2009, -2/+6I couldn't agree more with your statement that makes no sense.
- SuperStromboli, on 03/06/2009, -0/+34 months strong...
- kcasper, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3Unfortunately no. It is part of the World Community Grid. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
PC based only. - subliminalurge, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3I thought Friday was cancer day?
- mediaspree, on 03/06/2009, -1/+4Incurable STD? Don't let it slow you down, brother!
http://www.STDmatch.net - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+4What? Did you get married or something?
Did you know that there is a food, that once a woman eats it, she loses all desire for sex almost immediately?
It's called "wedding cake". - jgtg32a, on 03/06/2009, -1/+4Then don't have sex with HIV patients
- gamepr0, on 03/06/2009, -2/+4Oh you're so smart, let me tell you something, everyone can get HIV in alot of ways.
- defmer, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2please do make money from cure...CURE and I do not accept the idea to create an economic model based on the never ending dependence on your product, especially when lives depend on it.
- irreverend, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2You're kidding right?
- irreverend, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2That's why I'm asking if he's kidding, it's much bigger than simply wearing condoms and not doing drugs. Plus abstinence is the biggest load of *****.
- jeexbit, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2Finally, someone is using their head.
- jennyvan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2That only works if both parties are monogamous/not exposing themselves to risky behavior (and you don't necessarily have to be married to do this). This isn't even taking into account factors beyond their control (blood transfusion, occupational exposure, rape...) So your "solution" isn't as radical as it is overly simplistic.
- nullcodes, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2That's just plain ***** to say we're still tinkering with it.
Magic Johnson is alive and free from AIDS symptoms over 15 years after it was revealed that he has it.
People with HIV who use the latest treatments are now able to avoid progressing to AIDS virtually indefinitely, and often bring the virus down to undetectable levels. The spread of AIDS has been slowed down considerably in the US.
Within 25 years of finding out the damn thing exists, we are already able to keep the virus from bringing about AIDS symptoms in many cases. Even if it takes another 25 to get to a vaccine/complete cure .. that is not too bad. - pendrachken, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2@buggles:
Piss off, I don't need you OR your religion to tell me what to do. MY religion doesn't give a ***** about wedlock, only that you don't intentionally harm others.
*****, it don't take a rocket surgeon to know that you don't just sleep with anything that walks... and get BOTH tested before you DO start any intimacy. - jennyvan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2He's got a point. It would help if people did more to reduce their risks by controlling the things they can control. But then there are other parts of the world where AIDS is an even bigger problem (Africa anyone). Most of these people don't have access to condoms and good medical care and education. So many of the women don't really have the option to refuse sex. And then you get all these kids that are born with it. What do you tell those people?
It's a worldwide problem. It's not just limited to promiscuous, IV drug using people in rich countries that should know better. - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2The article mentions two hypotheses. One is the prevention of inflammation which will prevent T-cells from rushing to the site and becoming infected themselves. The other is direct inactivation of the virus.
- nullcodes, on 03/06/2009, -1/+3Also, you are terribly misinformed. Trillions have NOT been spent on AIDS.
Over 25 years, a few billion (most of which is the cost of treating or prevention programs .. not researching a cure), yes .. but not trillions .. that's ridiculous. - inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1Sweet! People can share puss together, how cute...
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+110 Billion direct US funding, from one measure alone, in 2009 (not including anything that is sure to be in the stimulus plan). You'll find plenty more if you want to actually research (try the Google). Not to mention the private sector, corporate and personal donations etc...
As far as the progress we have made with AIDS, nobody seems to know why Magic is still alive and when looking at the decrease in AIDS cases, you can point to increased awareness of the disease, prevention, and vulnerability demographics, led to protection education, condom/needle drives that helped lower new infections dramatically while the early infected died off. - inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1No, I'm not kidding - not in the least. That doesn't mean I favor stopping research into controlling or blocking the disease though. It just means that I think we should also focus on controlling the behavioral mistakes that lead to infection.
Is this practical for places like Africa? No, but attempting to research a cure, vaccine, or control for a highly mutagenic virus isn't very practical either.
Face it, there are no socially acceptable "practical" solutions for the HIV / AIDS problem on a global scale. We have to work with a parallel series of "impractical" solution attempts instead. - awsaws, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1well, tens of thousands people do not know they have HIV... (and neither do you)
also the risk of infections is highest during the first few weeks after infection (when by definition, people are least likely to already have been diagnosed as HIV positive)
so, to really reduce your risks, you might as well have sex with people who know they are HIV positive and who are on a successful treatment regimen (which means a vastly reduced viral load and a quasi-negligible risk of infecting you)
at least, that's safer than having sex without condoms with people who assume they are HIV negative...
ain't so simple now, ain't it? - ZapochGenitalia, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1I love how you capitalised SEX.
"LIke we're all supposed to."
Can you explain this to me? Why are we supposed to remain virgins until we are married? - HornyAngel, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Was that a boy monkey or a girl monkey he had? I heard that it wasn't the sex - those fools like to eat raw monkey meat and brains. At least have the decency to cook it.
- dandonia, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1Shame, it would be good to see them all on the Life service and xbox live.
- MPorterM, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1It's "too", you illiterate *****.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1I hear you, but there are more factors involved. What if the never ending dependence is all there is? What if it's the best solution among the possible choices? Never ending dependence does not necessarily mean monopolies or price gouging. Also note that in this case it is a natural unpatentable compound.
- jennyvan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+1Oh I know. I was agreeing with you...just being more verbose about it I guess :)
- kierucom, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1@kcasper
There is an OSX install available; the system just seems to auto-detect your OS and offer you the best choice. - danthepiercer, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1had no idea this existed...thanks!
- nullcodes, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1That 10 billion is for African aid, not to find a cure .. and that is a fairly recent initiative.
Yeah I do use the Google ok.
People do know why Magic is still alive .. it's the new drugs. Nearly everyone who gets on the new treatments has a similar response .. why don't you do a teeny bit of research yourself? - HornyAngel, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Masturbate more often?
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1a rocket surgeon?
do you know how few people ACTUALLY get tested before having sex? - HornyAngel, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Not if they have butt sex. This is a time-honored method of preventing pregnancies.
