- grapesofbaath, on 11/11/2007, -1/+389Don't get your hopes up. The subjects didn't develop immunity, they developed an "immune response." What's the difference? The subjects were not injected with HIV and showed immunity to it. They weren't injected with HIV at all, of course. Blood samples were taken from them, and tested for antibodies to HIV. This they did show, which is good. However, literally dozens and dozens of other HIV vaccines have been at this stage before, showing the same antibody promise.
But then when they perform a real world trial (by vaccinating high-risk people in Africa and comparing later HIV infection rates to a control group) they find no difference with the placebo.
Wait until the real trials to get excited, because in 20 years nothing has panned out yet. - 4Paws, on 11/11/2007, -8/+272Go science!

The number of times HIV/AIDS/CANCER has been treated with amazing results/cured on Digg. - kru1e, on 11/08/2007, -1/+153Gee Wiz, this is what the twelfth time we have cured HIV on Digg?
- duddles, on 11/11/2007, -7/+153The drug had the opposite effect and those 10% became ... the REAVERS!

- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -6/+95What happened to the other 10%, though?
- Gav0510, on 11/06/2007, -2/+87Lol. "Where just gonna give you AIDS. Fingers crossed you'll be immune."
- supermanred, on 11/11/2007, -2/+54Their ***** fell off and they quit smoking.
- Sornos, on 11/08/2007, -3/+52It works, bitches.
- Tiak, on 11/06/2007, -2/+3946 have made the front page... This number is more impressive than yours.
- KokomoNYC, on 11/05/2007, -5/+41Or the homophobia. Apparently it's rampant.
- skyfox2k, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3490% of the time, it works everytime.
- ekravchenko, on 11/11/2007, -0/+31Last modified by: Jenny Hermansson 2006-08-31 ? Was that article posted over a year ago?
- yonah, on 11/11/2007, -1/+30The article is from summer 06. Not really a "new" vaccine..
- Tiak, on 11/06/2007, -2/+30They obviously didn't test the actual virus on these people, it explains that 90% showed an immune response, it doesn't say that this response was to the standard virus.
- scallon, on 11/12/2007, -8/+35You know what would be nice? A cure for HIV. When is that going to happen? Soon, hopefully, though probably not for a few years at least. So you know what would be really nice? If we could just get the people who distribute food and water and medical care in Africa to give out condoms, we could start to nip the problem in the bud. A lot of these groups, however, are backed by, or are in fact themselves, Christian organizations and are against birth control. So well progress in this scientific area is great, and I do believe a cure is imminent. How about we just do a little more right now instead of waiting for the miracle cure to be delivered?
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -1/+28After the injection, one of the brighter test subjects was overheard laughing and saying '" I wore a condom, I wore a condom, neener neener neener, I wore a condom."
- cfuse, on 11/06/2007, -0/+27If it helps to get more Firefly movies or series made, then I think that is entirely acceptable.
- fearlessfx, on 11/05/2007, -0/+24You mean 28 Days Later?
- ChzPlz, on 11/06/2007, -0/+23They don't inject people with HIV when they're testing to see if it works in the real world. The give the vaccine to high-risk people and compare how many end up HIV+ when compared to another group of high risk people that didn't get the vaccine.
- Tiak, on 11/05/2007, -0/+23Umm, cold fusion has yet to be seen....
- NordicSkiing, on 11/06/2007, -0/+21Didn't this happen last week? (and every week)

*****. - doctordbx, on 11/11/2007, -6/+26When my generation were in our teens, we were ***** scared of a nuclear holocaust, and at the time, it didn't seem the Superpowers were doing much to stop it... literally, I think we have a generation of manic depressives because of the fear that was instilled us.
The current generation should be scared like a ***** about HIV, I know it adds to my list of things to watch out for, but I worry the current generation don't take it seriously enough. Articles like this are good, as it keeps the issue top of mind, shows there's a worldwide effort to combat it, and gives hope to the millions of sufferers.
Saying ***** like "not in a million years" and "it will never be cured" might help smug little egos sitting behind a keyboard (many who are not sexually active yet), but do not take away the hope of the millions of people worldwide who suffer this disease. Hope (and donations) are the only thing keeping the effort going. If they all threw their hands in the air and said "can't be done" where would the world be?
Also, a few posts above a Digger rightly points out the Christian groups either need to change their thinking or GTFO of Africa as their condemnation of condom use is helping to spread this disease at a rapid rate. Digg him up! - HUKI365, on 11/08/2007, -2/+21"It works, bitches"
http://xkcd.com/54/ - yomamaisfat, on 11/05/2007, -4/+22"Goodbye condoms". 6 months later: "oops".

- Sornos, on 11/06/2007, -3/+17You mean 9 months later?
- MasterThief117, on 11/05/2007, -1/+15You have to watch out with articles like these. This one is most likely written by students in the school, so they will make it sound better than it actually is. It is almost as bad when another news company reports on it. Most reporters know ***** about science and will inadvertently make things sound better than they are because they don't understand half the ***** the scientist says. This is pretty much the reason why you hear about so many potential cures for diseases that seem to do so well when tested in the lab, but a few days later you hear nothing about it.
- RoninBic, on 11/05/2007, -1/+14I was under the impression it was from morons who ate the monkeys under-cooked lead to the virus in humans
- aedes, on 11/05/2007, -0/+12ah... being scratched by a monkey while your doing it in the ass, and then eating it afterwords without cooking it.
- sotopheavy, on 11/06/2007, -1/+13The other 10% experienced rectal bleeding, rectal itching and irritable bowel syndrome. This actually looks like a pretty reliable source.

- iheartjebus, on 11/07/2007, -2/+13THIS IS OLD. THE VACCINE DID NOT PASS CLINICAL TRIALS. Sorry for the all-caps, but people shouldn't be digging something that doesn't matter anymore
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -2/+13Yeah, it happened once... but we don't know how and we can't get it to happen again.
- cgruber, on 11/05/2007, -2/+13truly tasteless. dugg =)
- mattn, on 11/05/2007, -0/+10The virus was created through experimentation and observation? Or do you mean as a function of the natural world? If you believe the first, congrats! You're a conspiracy theorist! If you think the second one means science created it, congrats! You're wrong! Observing and describing the natural world does not mean science IS the natural world
- spyd3rweb, on 11/06/2007, -0/+9Damn you fox for canceling Firefly.
