- mdjohnson1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28I used to use a trackball for Missile Defense
- DeskFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Buried as inaccurate; golf balls have dimples.
- barnis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There were three of these in Northern England about 2 miles from my childhood home. Everyone refered to them as "the Golf balls" they have since been replaced by a less cool pyramid.

And you call yourselves geeks! - SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If you would read TFA you would know that it's only there for repair and isn't a permanent fixture. Besides, that particular national monument isn't exactly located along some scenic coast line - it's in a shipyard to begin with.
- andrewcsayer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Fore!
- knowitall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Seen this coming in to the harbor one morning in late may... Hell of a site...
Here is some more info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea-based_X-band_Radar - TexanPsycho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Were you expecting to be dugg up?
- salinemist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Are you 8?
- enforcerpsu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Great idea. Lets just forget about missile defense. We haven't been attacked yet so that means we won't ever be attacked. Of course its unproven...duh.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does it also have a thunderbolt attack option? Like the NOD towers in C&C.
- adam07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They have the same thing at Buckley AFB outside of Denver. You can see 3 of them even if you're way up in the mountains. http://www.buckley.af.mil/
- ryanthagreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was expecting the ball from Epcot.
- Zaggynl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2pingpong ball would be more accurate, buried.
- Powerdrift, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Man, I've been wondering what that thing was for a very long time. It was pretty cool seeing it leaving the harbor.
- HautePie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Has no-one ever seen one of these before ? Lame.
- CeeJayDK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I can has giant gumball ? - NOM NOM NOM
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It's all fun and games until some vandal paints them blue...
Lame comment? Check. - corkster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I saw that when I was there recently, and it didn't look as big as it does in the photo. Needless to say, now I know what it's for!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1***wondering***
whatever happenned to two balls with a stick..? This one is the other way around - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1so a giant will use this to protect us a la missile command?
- holygram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Looks intimidating.
[/sarcasm] - didiman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually you really have no idea what you are talking about. Do you always talk out of your ass?
- Jleagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Woo, these ones have dimples!
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I enjoy seeing this on my way to work...It's so cool.
- Aesculapius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You are Number 6!
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Screw you!...North Korea can launch missiles that can reach Hawaii.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And I thought it was a new weapon for Tower Defense. I'm stupid.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And by "golf ball for missile defense" you mean "white spherical radar dome" ?
- didiman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So we should wait until we get attacked then build the defense system. Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
- NidStyles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1When the hell have we ever been under attack from a missile threat? What is the precedence for wasting money on unproven technology?
- chrismgtis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If you're going to spend excessive amounts of tax payer's money, get it right the first time. It's not that hard. Then again we have idiots running this country, who probably have trouble figuring out how to operate a microwave.
- ElbowGeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is just a modern version of the golfballs which have traditionally surrounded military radar installations during the cold war. They are there to protect the radar transceivers from weather and prying eyes.
The only problem with radar is that it tends to obsolete itself very quickly, so its likely that this will only be in operation for a few short years at most. - Dustmuffins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"I saw this coming into the harbor one morning in late May... Hell of a sight..."
fixed... damn people learn correct grammar. - freakenboy808, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0i see this almost every time i go out, i pass it on the free way :P
- theflava, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'm in the Navy in Pearl Harbor, I've been on a tour of this thing, its freakin' huge. They have to build an elevator for it every time it comes to the shipyard out here
- johndi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Unfortunately they aren't near as interesting as they look. I won't spoil it, but for those who really want to know...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radome - JerrodZeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Aristocracy is always cruel.
- Aeronaut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is really fun to look at, especially up close. I'm shocked at its frequent departing and returning though. And it's crazy expensive.
- ganjadude4391, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Must be gods golfball!
- NidStyles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1When the hell have we ever been under attack from a missile threat? What is the precedence for wasting money on unproven technology?
- Apokalyps2547, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Buried as lame. It's just a fancy Doppler Radar. Most (dare I say all?) Doppler Radars look like big white balls.
- HautePie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0*dubya voice*
THE TERSTS AR GUN TACK MERKA WITH THEIR MISSILS CUZ THEY HATE UHR FREEM AN MOXY - EspriteX, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1its not inaccurate this thing is nicknamed the golfball, even my father who works in pearl harbor calls it that.
- sb76117, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0what a great way to ruin the view at a national monument... and how appropriate. hope no one suspects a missile for a flock of birds like they did the first time
