- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2a lot of these "tips" are bullcrap. you DO NOT have to run all out for 45 mins to get results jogging. you DO NOT need supplements to reach your goals. Use a site like freetrainers.com and read the forums or something. Better info.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, a couple of those "tips" are particularly bad ideas....
- jb55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ddr
- Wardonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this isnt particularly good guide... and besides even if it was im not exactly sure how that is aimed at geeks. But DDR is awsome try that out.

Oh yeah, this is news. - tristant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amphetamines.
- paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Two words: Dance Dance Revolution (okay fine, I said one of them twice)
I've tried everyone else's "traditional" workouts (jogging, gym cardio equipment, group classes, etc) and the only thing that I can stick to for more than a week is DDR. I guess it manages to keep my brain occupied while my body does its thing.
But if you're going to get serious about it at all, you need better pads. Take your cheap ebay soft pad and mod it! Get a piece of plywood (doesn't even have to be that thick) and use a staplegun to secure the pad (around the edges where no wires are) to the plywood. Hammer down the staples all the way. Cover with duct tape. Now it won't slide around, but to make things even better cover the entire board with clear vinyl floor covering. Now you can play with shoes! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PUT DOWN THE FORK! FACE!
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should be noted if you do take Creatine be sure to drink as much water as you can. Creatine is short for Creatine Monohydrate, it basically uses water to facilitate strength and growth in your muscles. Creatine can easily dehydrate you if you're not careful. I suggest taking it after workouts too, it can be especially exhausting if you take it right before.
- heartless_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmmm about as commone sense as a workout guide can be. Good starting point, but it lacks a lot of information to be of any real use.
- Numbski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ignore that page. It's garbage.

That's the REAL geek's guide to working out. :) Use Max-OT on weights, and mix in cardio. Amen. Works very well. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't worked out since high school. LMAO.
- joshbula, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An iPod nano and the t2blender podcast also helps relieve the boredom of running.
- espot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, none of those tips will work one little bit unless you are motivated. Working out is 99% mental. You just have to find something that you love doing (for me it is cycling), and just get into the zone. All I think about at work is getting home and going for a ride. The more I ride, the better I get at it, and the more fun it becomes. Once you get your body into decent shape, you can start doing other kinds of excersise. They won't be as painful because your body is used to excersising. It all starts with finding that one thing you enjoy doing.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you want to tone your muscles, i.e. remove the fat from within and around the muscle tissue, set the weight so you can do 30-40 reps."
TONE?? WTF NO. - Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do aikido 3 times a week. Beating up people is much more fun than going to a boring gym and working with boring weights.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Take his advice about the Creatine. It does work a lot. I take about 15 g every workout along with about 80 g of whey protein. Works ***** wonders if you're looking to build muscle and strength.
One thing I don't agree with him on is the situps part. He's saying you should basically do cardio situp sets which take forever and are tiring at times. My advice is to use a weight-aided abs machine such as an ab cruncher. I crunch about 150 lbs with my abs in reps of 10 and it works wonders. Can boil eggs on these things. - merloj159, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0links! links! in every sentence. ok, I know you can link
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to the poster: this is an E2 page... OMG HOLY SLASHDOT
to oxygen: yah? like what? are you arnold schwarzeneger? - DarthDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this targeted to Geeks? These are all basic points that anyone should know. Putting the work 'Geeks' in the title makes it more interesting to digg users? Wow
- swilfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on guys working out isn't THAT bad, i mean some times if your stuck on a thought or just want to zone our going on a treadmill or bike for 30 mins lets you filter everything. So you'll feel accomplished and less stressed
- aluminumpork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The writeup itself isn't particularily good, but if you scroll down at the comments, some really good stuff in there.
- billflu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+07.5 miles in 50 minutes, every other day... works for me.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To clearify: By "easy and quick way to lose weight" I was actually referring that it's quick to do. Worded terribly. Weight loss will probably be trackable from month to month if maintained daily and if you don't pig out.
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wikipedia way better than E2.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what a bogus write up. youd be better off searching google than following those directions
- funkayy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guide is definitely not something I would follow.
Crunches WILL work if you're holding your ab muscles (not with your hands, flex them or make them tense), but you only need to lift off the ground to a 30 - 45 degree angle. They only workout your upper abdomincal muscles, too. - renskav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Find something fun to do. lets face it, workout sucks, if you're like me you wont be able to motivate yourself to run for 45 minutes once a week. You need to find something that's fun. Raquetball, squash, landhockey, shooting clay pigeons, whatever doesnt bore your brains out. If you've no discipline, there's no point in trying to overcome it, find something fun and have your discipline work for you and not against you.
- p5ychop3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Step 1: Get off ur fat a$$ and away from the computer...."
done.
Now I can't read digg, nooooo, I'm not up to date on top tech stories!
*curls up into fetal position and starts whimpering* - madtiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is where I see a flaw in the plan: This "geek" claims to work out with a mythical creature called a "girlfriend".
Seriously, Nerds understand the basics, we just choose to ignore them. - Aflat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stop digging all day, stop playing WoW and lift some? Bogus. I digg all day, I play WoW at night, and I still lift in the mornings before work. You can do all 3, they aren't mutually exclusive. But it is a mental thing, sometimes its not easy getting up in the morning to workout after a late night WoW session.
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is alot of bad advice.
1. "Strenuous" excercise isn't particularly effective for anything, and should be avoided - that's when you get injured. Broke assed nerds sitting on couches don't get healthier.
2. All you need to burn fat is moderate excercise. Strenuous excercise actually mixes the fat-burning mode (aerobic metabolism) and non-fat burning mode (anaerobic metabolism), and might even induce a ketabolic state whereby your muscles eat themselves. It takes five minutes of moderate exercise to get into an aerobic mode, and you need to hold it for about thirty minutes. A good swift walk for 45 minutes a day is all anyone really needs to get rid of visceral fat (adipose fat tissues).
3 You probably don't need a gallon of water a day. "They" (whoever the hell they are) actually only recommend about two liters a day for average people. This also varies with climate - you might need three if you live in extreme climates like deserts or arctic areas. It's also a bad idea to drink lots of water while you're working out. You should instead sip from a small bottle during your workout, maybe 20oz in total. Do avoid sodas, tea, and coffee - caffiene is a diuretic, and will siphon water off. Also, diet patches and gums (particularly altoids gum) contain another powerful diuretic called "mannitol", so avoid them. Healthy urine has pale yellow color. If your urine comes out clear, you're drinking plenty of water. If it comes out a golden brown, you're not getting enough.
4. Being sore isn't bad, but it also isn't necessary. Soreness is caused by microscopic tears in muscle fibers. When these tears repair, they build additional cells in that fiber, adding bulk and strength. If you're not going for bulk and strength, then soreness is a signal you're doing the wrong excercise (particularly if it's persistent). People looking for endurance want to slowly build up muscle using low weights and high reps. If you're trying to bulk up so you won't be intimidated by the jocks at the water cooler, then it's large weights and low reps. Know the difference between being hurt and being injured. "Feeling the burn" may hurt, it may even leave you sore, but it's mostly harmless. Outright pain is an indication that you're doing actual physical harm, like straining tendons, pulling muscles, grinding cartilidge, or fracturing bones. If it hurts too much, back off and take it easy. Let it heal and then keep at it.
I could write a book about what you need to do to get into shape, but the best thing to do is to contract with a licensed physical trainer, particularly one with a good portfolio. They can eliminate alot of needless hard work and wasted time, and recommend a diet excercise routine that gets you into shape fast. They'll also be able to modify it and your lifestyle so that you'll stay healthy over time. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm willing to bet geeks generally know a lot more about working out than most people think. I for one can't catch, hit or throw a ball to save my life, which is exactly why I go to a gym.
- HuwJanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Take his advice about the Creatine"
Obviously you have no idea how Creatine actually works so Ill tell you to save you from injury.
Creatine allows your muscles to hold extra water, thus making you feel pumped, and because of the added leverage, making you feel stronger. There are two major reasons to avoid this junk:
1) If you stop taking it you will spend ages pissing your muscles away, literally! As soon as the binding effect of the Creatine is gone the muscles will try to get rid of the extra water they are holding and your extra size goes down the pan.
2) While Creatine adds leverage to the muscles to give the impression of greater strength, it does nothing to support the joints and ligaments which have to actually move the weights for the muscles. Keep using Creatine, and once you reach a certain amount of weight, you are going to start suffering injuries.
Do a little research before you start taking things and advising others to do the same. - FAT_PIGGY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the worst working put giude ever if your a geek join the forum.bodybuilding.com forum for start then after you learn go to andvanced boards such as anabolicminds.com
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well for one thing get yourself into a gym to at least see the chicks in spandex... oh god how i miss the spandex...
Seriously tho, i think all anyone needs is to overcome the initial feeling "out of place" at the gym. Anyone can figure it out from there. Just take things slow and don't go nuts trying to look like a hero and you will reach your goals. That site that numbski recommends looks killer, and should really help you figure out what is realistic. Just remember you are in there for you and not to impress anyone else (well maybe the ladies). - gallamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, are there strongest men on the outer-worlds?
- nadageek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is crap... I'm glad that LionHart likes to piss out all that expensive whey protein and creatine he takes in. 15 g of creatine and 80 g of protein in one serving is a waste. Maybe he should write an article on how to clean clothing of his washboard abs!
- torunforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was searching around amazon for any books about geek-workouts, but all I could find was "Behind the Desk Workout" by Joan M. Guccione
http://a9.com/1888725001 - bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is really easy. duh.
#1 - get a really hot girlfriend
#2 - spend lots of time in bed with #1
#3 - the pounds will melt away. AND you'll have more self-esteem. - el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For radical weight loss, use heroin...
- Nate_LapT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it wasnt so damn cold, and I could wake up in the morning, I would bike to work, 7-8 miles, did it for 2 weeks in the summer once for drivers training, parents wouldnt wake up to take me so I rode my bike :P well I think thats the last time I rode my bike, Ive been out of school since 2001
- rongon87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah it's is a great way to start working out. But if you your more into building muscles i would go to http://bodybuilding.com -- I stated working out two years ago ever since i used the site for research. trust me you will like it :)

That's the most natural way to do it. - Digital.Totem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't work out and I'm skinny as hell 6'2 150 lbs. All it takes to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than you use. I suggest cutting out soft drinks, for an instant 15-25 lbs in about a month, and if you need your caffeine drink coffee I think it is close to or actually zero calories if you don't use creamers or sugar.
- dbarbour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Creatine helps increase the amount of water your muscles take in. If you drink enough water, you shouldn't need creatine.
- menace303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Seriously tho, i think all anyone needs is to overcome the initial feeling "out of place" at the gym"
Totally agree. It's a whole 'nother world in there. Once you get over it, it's all gravy. - troutfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy who wrote that obviously does not work out much. If you go all out every time when you jog you will end up burned out and injured after a month. And fat burning happens best at a brisk walk. The harder one runs the more glycogen is burned. In about 45 minutes all the body's store of glycogen is gone and one has to stop or slow down significantly. It is best to begin slow and slowly work up your intensity over a couple of months when jogging.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm too lazy. I'll just be rich one day and have surgery.
