Claim: The government is lying about 9/11.
Popular Mechanic: Hey, government, are you lying?
Government: Nah.
Popular Mechanic: 9/11 conspiracey theories got OWNED!
There was nothing close to objective study of the theories here... - stealthninjaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@stark23x:
Not to flame you, but it seems your concept of security is lacking as well. Were it such a no-no to release that tape, why allow the gas station's camera's to film the Pentagon in the first place? I'm sure it had to be known for quite some time these cameras were capturing footage of the Pentagon. Also judging by the released shots, it doesn't seem to include anything (I would deem) confidential, but I'm no where near a Fed so I don't really know. I just fail to see why they refuse to release any footage that defintively shows a plane at the Pentagon. Not much of a conspiracy buff, but that does indicate they have something to hide. - samwyse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The good news about all the 9/11 theories is that the number of JFK assassination theories has fallen to its lowest level in years.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/marketing/1100892.html - s2104ok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For those wanting more info on the subject, I recommend finding the video, '911 - In Plane Site', prob a torrent out there. It goes into detail about some of the widely available pics and movies from that day. We may never know if something outside the official explanation happened in DC and NY, but the news media is no help. Watching the mentioned video, it dawned on me that not PBS, Discovery, ABCBSNBCFOX, nobody has gone into as much detail as they do on the video. Politicians are gonna do what they're gonna do, but it's up to the news media to tell us whats really going on. If the news media is compromised, then we're all screwed. My take is that we're all screwed, think about all the crap that passes for news today, or not news, *cough* miner's alive *cough* tell the world w/out verifying first *cough *cough* For now, I go back to burritos, playoff football, and digg
- gohepcat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Considering I watched the plane crash into the pentagon with my own eyes. I don't need that much convincing.
- evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's more interesting than the stance of the theorists on either side of this debate is the theorists themselves. I love when my friends who sell carpet and furniture or deliver pizzas or provide home health care for invalids start telling me about what they "know" happened on 9/11. That they "know" that only an explosion could have caused the dust to shoot out of the WTC. That they "know" the WTC towers and building 7 could have only collapsed as they did from a controlled demolition.
It will never cease to amaze me how people can get one piece of information, never verify it's validity, never research further, and yet they are suddenly an expert. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is it whenever some crack pot comes up with a conspiracy theory because of fuzzy photographs people all around the world back him up and say "look, look! Hes right!!!!"
But whenever the government comes up with a reason or a science magazine explains all the theories everyone goes "lies!! They are just lying!!!"
No one questions the credibility of the conspiracy theorist!?? - zapada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Article filled with even more ***** than the conspiracy theorists. No digg.
- kingmanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeh this is a good article but its funny how digg will beat slashdot to new stories, then publish one from March like its new.
Its bad enough when Digg, Slashdot, BoingBoing, Fark, Drudge, Sploid, and every other damn site links to the same bunch of stories daily. Digg does not need to go back to link to the sites they missed way back when. sheesh - spectre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The Chief Editor on this piece was Ben Chertoff who is the cousin of Michael Chertoff, the new Secretery of Homeland Security."

stark23x: I can tell you from personal experience that you will be personally gratified by doing about 15 minutes of research at your local library or on the internet about some legitimate (not that popular mechanics hogwash) questions regarding 911. for the record, the surveillance tapes belonging to private businesses surrounding the pentagon are not "security tapes of the Pentagon" or even property of the pentagon, though think otherwise and did confiscate them - starvingben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3matthewmok: That seems like a reasonable point, but I still find it hard to believe a fire in the basement would cause a symmetrical demo-style collapse. Also, considering that these three buildings are the only ones in history to collapse from a fire, and that the owner said on video that they decided to "pull" the building (it means controlled demolition, takes at least a week to setup), I'm not really sold on that coincidence theory.

Funny how I didn't see that news story mentioned in any USA news feeds, but it made the BBC front page. - TyRaNNOus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually there are photos of molten slag being removed days and weeks later from the basement of the wtc. Also video evidence exists look at the videos closely at the time of collapse the middle goes the the rest into a neat pile all 7 buildings did. Building 7 was the smoking gun not only did the media and officials lie about it but then the building owner Larry Silverstein admitted on a 2002 PBS documentary, 'America Rebuilds'. that he and the fdny decided to pull it.the official story was diesel in the basement n which the 9/11 investigators them selves did not agree with.
Most of you would laugh or call me crazy but it's true and then he collected a huge insurance claim on the building i think like 7 billion
Also to note i noticed this but by the time the building collapsed there was no fire and in photos you can see people standing at the hole where the plane entered if the fire was indeed hot enough to melt it would have left no survivors. The thick black smoke also indicates smoldering office supplies as i am sure by that time the fuel had burned itself out.
NORAD lied their original timeline had shown that thy shot down the fourth plane as opposed to the bogus story you heard on tv. it used to be on their website until the 9/11 commision made them change it.
This here may be a coincodence but you judge. Presidential order w199i stopped special agents from investigating possible terrorist cells. The FBI were told to back off the saudi royals even though they had evidence linkin them to their black sheep brother osama.
In the end groups like bohemian lub and bilderberg admit publically that yes political and business desicions are exclusivly made at their meetings. They just put a spin on globalism make look nice.
Remember political leaders for thousands of years have used terrorism to get their people to comply and now that cold war is over america needs new enemies to fuel their war driven fascist economy.
My estimate is that Bush and about 2000 others control 70% of the worlds economy through the U.N. and the World Bank/IMF all privatly run for profit like the federal reserve and it's illuminati money. - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone that thinks a 747 skid on the ground in front of the Pentagon, and in fact hit the Pentagon, is so delusional they should be admitted immediately.
747s leave ALOT of wreckage, and would have left a big skid mark had it touched the ground in front of the Pentagon. No 747 is going to crash into a building and just leave a single hole. That's got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone claim. - Porgie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"piss off a liberal work hard, be happy and say that 9/11 actually did happen"

Piss off a Republican... Actually lower taxes, cut social programs, say you're an American born Buddhist and want your religious symbols on government property, and then actually keep illegals from crossing American borders.
Why did you have to make this a Republican vs Democrat thing. I have a feeling that most of us are getting sick of both parties anyways.
Oh, btw. This is an old story. I remember this from like a year ago or so. - bilton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The tape weren't released because IT'S THE PENTAGON, STUPID. You don't give away security tapes of the Pentagon just because some idiot wants to play conspiracy theory. Why not just hang a sign out front that says "WE CATER TO ANY CRACKPOT IDIOTS THAT COME BY: ALL SECURITY IS NOW OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE FOR SCRUTINY BY KEYBOARD JOCKEYS ON DIGG.COM.""
The pentagon did release 5 frames of a surveillance camera outside of the pentagon which did show a ball of fire but no jet. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article is plainly wrong on some instances. I'm not saying I buy the alternate theories the conspiracy theorists have come up with to explain some of the problems with the official story, but the claim that NORAD wasn't prepared for instances where hijacked airliners would be used as weapons is a straight lie: NORAD had been praticing drills for just such an attack for a while, and if I remember correctly, was actually practicing for a drill while the 9-11 attacks happened.
If you want to be fair, read the PM article, but also view some of the counterevidence:

For one, there is no doubt that Building 7 was demolished purposefully. The owner was on the record saying that they pulled the building. - zxao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article Does not do its job. This raises more questions on the subject of conspiracy. If your going to have someone (or some paper) defend you, Make sure they know how. Sure they're are plenty of theory's regarding 9/11, but there is no arguing with facts. And it seems like that is exactly what this article is doing. all it takes is a little common sense to see that there is something wrong here.
I don't stand with one man or another. I make my own stance according to the facts that i find. And I have to say FACT: There is a conspiracy regarding 9/11. There is no theory involved. - tatical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They don't explain how two 100+ story steel buildings can come down at almost the same rate as gravity, less than 10 seconds each. BOTH buildings came down the most optimal way they could.
They also didn't explain why building 7 also came down the most optimal way it could, and it wasn't even hit (by a plane or flying debris).
This article didn't do what it was supposed to, it says that the governments report on 9/11 is bull or just VERY inaccurate, it doesn't debunk anything. - gohepcat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Hell we don't even really know what happened with JFK"
Ohh for *****'s sake. You have got to be kidding me. - waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This story is kind of pointless. It's not like the nutball conspiracy theorists are going to believe anything as boring as reality anyway.
- stealthninjaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another piece of conspiracy FACT was missed here is Operation Northwoods. Don't know what this is? Have a look:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods
Oh, look at that. It even has an official document to prove it's true. Go figure. So for all you "our government would never" blowhards, here's a serious reality check. You're government is VERY capable of doing something like this. It has before, and it does now. Acknowledging this doesn't make you UN-American, it means you have your eyes open. Do I know what happened on 9/11? Nope. Don't claim to. Examine the facts and you will see (assuming you posses common sense) that a lot of things had to "just go right" to an extreme in order for an actual "terrorist" to pull this off.
Let's not forget 9/11 also provided our current administration the perfect excuse to wage wars that they planned BEFORE 9/11. All a coincidence I'm sure.
You tell me a plane crashes into a building, the resulting fuel spillage is hot enough to melt reinforced steel (ignoring the fact there are people looking OUT OF THE HOLE where the plane hit). The resulting stress from molten steel, collapses the building. This would be the first building in the world to collapse due to heat stress. It is believed that nothing on either plane survives, not even the black boxes. Later we find one of the alleged terrorists wallet in pristine condition. Call me a nut, but I have a very hard time believing all this. Must've been the special Al Qaeda terrorist leather.
Soon after Big Bad bin Laden releases a tape, (later proved to be a fake, not even him on the tape) claiming credit for the whole thing, and dares us to come get him in Afghanistan. We go into Afghanistan, kill, pillage, and kill some more. No Osama was found :(
Later the whole thing gets spun to include Iraq, where shocking new evidence shows various terrorists were treated at a Baghdad hospital, implying the Baath party is connected to 9/11 somehow. Common sense would tell you in all probability a terrorist received treatment in a US hospital at one time or another. Does that make us all terrorists?
Anyway, this claim was also later found to be false. The story then changes to Saddam having WMD's and will use them against us, or pass them off to a terrorist that will be happy to as well. It's also cited how he gassed the Kurds some time ago.
This story ignores the weapons he used, he got from us, courtesy of Donald Rumsfeld. Oh yea, this story also lacked credible evidence of any kind.
After we invade, more killing, more pillaging etc. We found ZERO evidence of Saddam having WMD's, not even so much as a bottle of Raid. The argument then went from us finding WMD's to liberating the people of Iraq. When the American public at large refuses to swallow this tripe, all we get is the equivalent of "our bad" from the White House. Undeterred, we turn our attention to Iran where the terrorist are surely hiding, and are very close to getting nuclear weapons. No really, they are this time. Pinky promise. - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Someone once told me "If there is a big disaster, those who benfit most _usually_ have a hand in it".
- b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WT7 imploded perfectly with only one small fire visible
and now none of the steel from the site is available for public inspection
so a highly improbable, no lets just say impossible idea that this fire was uniformly and instantly imploded with only minor fires visible is coupled with all evidence totally disappearing
oh and point to me the section of the 9/11 report where they dive into WTC7 in any meaningful way - frolich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let's add a little fuel to the conspiracy fire!

Whether or not many of the events of 9/11 are fact, fiction, or otherwise something in between ...is not relevant. What is relevant is that 95% of us will die not knowing what happened through and through. That I know. That no one can dispute, b/c they wouldn't be alive today if they did know. - manvsmonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just saw this on another page around digg. Now I can't remember where. I'm sleepy.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2023320890224991194 - dJCL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a few interesting debunkings of the debunking on the 9/11 conspiracy sites.
I personally don't buy everything they say, but some questions are interesting - like WTC #7's collapse, and the small projectile explosions lower down on the towers as they collapsed(and no it's not due to air pressure from the whole floor collapsing - that look like explosive squibs - I don't know exactly what they are though....
I don't buy it all, but there are some interesting questions among the noise, and I felt that this article danced around the good questions. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>> my only question is why was cheney wisked away to some underground bunker but they left bush in an elementary school?
Standard protocol is to move the veep to a protected location while the Pres continues to lead. That way, if the Pres dies during the fracas, the veep can assume command. - alphamatrix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6While I'm certainly not a supporter of the many conspiracy theories relating to 9/11 I do find this article to be a bit of a joke, its like asking a thief if he stole something and then printing whatever he says as truth. Yes, they have experts, but I feel the writers could have been a lot more objective.
The one thing that I would like to hear them talk about is the question of the various video surveillance systems that had view of the Pentagon 757's final approach and why (to my knowledge) the tapes haven't been released. - Mycroft999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it that the same group of people who believe the government is so corrupt and inept, also believe that that same government can pull of an incredibly detailed and complex conspiracy. A conspiracy in which no more than one or two of the dozens or even hundreds of knowing participants required to bring it off ever break the cover story?

It was well planned and well executed, and I wonder, today, IF we could stop such a thing???

OK - medhed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Popular Mechanics piece was proven to be a white house / pentagon scam. Everyone know this. We got news clips from CNN, Fox, PBS & others, admissions of foul-play, cover-up, taped confessions of the FBI trying to blow up the WTC in the 90s the first 3 times, affidavits, top CIA, FBI and government officials resignations over this BS, mountains, TONS of evidence, etc. Look, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. If people what to BELIEVE that 911 was the official story, fine. You can't fight a nation wide propaganda campaign, even when the white house is caught over and over again for funding what they themselves, and the law, defines as propaganda. 1st rule of propaganda is dis-info--forget the evidence, you can't fight the evidence, so make wild accusations about aliens, Elvis, grocery-store tabloid...guilt by association will kill 'em every time. Even if the guy behind the Popular Mechanics article is no other than Michael Chertoff relative. - wetmetalthong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have video of Silverstein, the owner of the world trade center, admitted that they pulled (demolished) building 7. This was on TV. He said it in an interview. http://www.prisonplanet.com/011904wtc7.html The video is here. Its him. Plain as day. "Pull it." This website says THAT THEY DIDN'T PULL IT. This article has been discredited.
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. I don't know where to start. Although the article certainly could have been more detailed and better written, Popular Mechanics is hardly a peer reviewed academic journal, so I really wasn't hoping for all that much. Some of the reasons were convincing, others less so. I do think there was a conspiracy, but it was among a sect of Wahhabi Islam called The Base, or more commonly left untranslated as Al Qaeda. As many of the sundry evidences for or against a domestic conspiracy have already been batted back and forth, I'll limit myself to one that has yet to be discussed, a topic of which I have intimate knowledge.
Ordinary citizens who have never served in a military unit have a difficult time understanding a military ethos. They see Full Metal Jacket or Platoon and get the general impression that the military is full of a bunch of crazy, soul-less ***** who have no problem killing the guy next to them. Take any population of significant size and you will have said crazy, soul-less *****, that I'll grant you. The overwhelming, homogeneous majority of the military, though, lives, fights and dies with one indelible premise: you take care of the guy next to you. Call it utilitarian, if you will: we are an all-volunteer force, and if everybody hates life and you can't trust the guy next to you when bullets start flying, people leave very, very quickly. Whatever the motive, it is a value imprinted on every soul that graduates from boot camp or a commissioning program. My point is this: we are incapable, institutionally, of committing such gross fratricide. It is impossible to train a soldier who will jump on a grenade to save his comrades in battle, and years later conspiratorially calculate the murder of those very same comrades. Can I show you this? Can I point it out with pictures, charts, graphs and videos? No. But, at least for me, the knowledge of my comrades-in-arms and the institutions of which we are the members suffices to put to rest any doubts concerning domestic complicity. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now here's the truth about the system that'll ***** up your mind
